Day 144 (Friday 11/09/09, NJJ) Breakfast at hotel. Had a drop in appointment at a nearby beauty salon. My first cut and highlights for over 6 months. Lunch at Rubios (Mexican). In the afternoon, took the car back to Dollar, picked up the minivan for the 'family holiday' and then on to the airport to pick up Joan, Joyce and John. Took ages to find where to pick them up from then they were on a later flight from LA so were further delayed. I was crying with excitement when waiting for them. It was quite emotional after more than 5 months apart. We went straight to the California Hotel Suites and then on for dinner before an early night. The 3 J's had been up for over 24 hours and had also had a lot ... read more

Day 143 (Thursday 10/09/09, NJJ) Slept on the hard ground again for most of the night. Got to the County Clerks Office by 8.30am. We filled in the Marriage Licence form, reviewed it with 'Elizabeth' the admin' assistant & then she completed the process. We were given the paperwork which Renate, our Wedding Officiant, will need for the wedding. On to Coronado - where we're getting married - for the first time. Had a wander around and got really excited. It's exactly what we hoped for. We stopped at a few beauty salons and restaurants for menus and prices for next week. After weeks of searching in jewellers we finally got J's wedding ring, in Wal Mart of all places. At Carlsbad Premium outlets Jay bought his wedding shirt, tie, shoes and belt from Kenneth Cole. ... read more

Day 142 (Wednesday 09/09/09, NJJ) 1 week to Wedding Kept waking up during the night from the rock hard floor! Awoke in morning to find that my air bed was flat - slow puncture! Gave me back ache and a stiff shoulder. Left camp by 9am for a day at San Diego Zoo. Jay had a bit of road rage on the way so I took over the driving - although to be fair to him he's done the majority of the driving so about time it got to him. Had a fab day. We've never seen such energetic koalas. Jamie has officially changed his favourite animal/big cat, it's no longer the snow leopard but instead is now the jaguar - big news! The female jaguar was very playful, and loved splashing around with her ball ... read more

Day 141 (Tuesday 08/09/09, NJJ) Drove straight to San Diego - wedding coming up! We went to the city administration building to book an appointment for our marriage licence, got it for Thursday at 8.30am. Can't do Wednesday 9th as loads of superstitious people are getting married there as the date is supposed to be lucky. Off to Campland on the Bay in Mission Bay. Checked in for 2 nights. Tent up and then off to Otay Ranch shopping mall. Jamie bought his suit for the wedding at Banana Republic there - it's perfect. I was so excited when he tried it on. He'd only just started looking for a suit and he found it straight away. It's been so good to not have the stress of organising a big wedding. On next to a Premium ... read more

Day 140 (Monday 07/09/09, NJJ) Labour Day USA Had a look at the Route 66 tac at the visitor centre. Left Kingman for California on the I40 West. Got excited when we passed the 'Welcome to California' roadsign. Drove alongside the Mojave National Preserve. Had a wander around 'Dollar Tree' and I had to buy some bits 'n' bobs to Jamie's frustration. In Barstow we stopped at a Tanger Outlet where I bought my first pair of Nine West shoes of this trip. The campsite we planned to stay at for the night was much further away than expected and then turned out to be closed so for the third nght in a row we had to check into a motel - Motel 6 in San Bernardino. Dinner at Zendejas Mexican restaurant next door. One good ... read more

Day 139 (Sunday 06/09/09, NJJ) The loud noises from the trains on the nearby tracks wasn't too disturbing during the night. Had a short walk around Flagstaff then drove back to Grand Canyon N.P. Did some more of the viewpoints which we didn't get to see yesterday then left the park after an hour or so. It was very busy there due to being holiday weekend. The weather was glorious. On to Williams. Had food at a Denny's and drove around the Route 66 loop. Stopped for ice cream at a Route 66 'Diner'. After driving for a time we checked into Rambling Rose motel and settled for the night - near the Santa Fe railroad. Jamie started his tooth whitening regime for the wedding. I had a coffee at Mr D'z diner. Booked our car ... read more

Day 138 (Saturday 05/09/09, NJJ) Slept well last night. Left campground by 10am. Saw the road formerly known as Route 666, that was the official road name until it was changed for the benefit of the superstitious. Left Monticello, passed by Mexican Hat (the town and rocks), into Navajo land and on to Monument Valley. Soon after the skies opened up and we pulled off the road for a bit. The weather cleared and once again it was hot and sunny. The land was pretty but as not as well run as it would be if it was managed by the National Park Service who do an exceptional job with the parks. We had to pay a fee to the Navajo to visit the main viewpoint in the valley. We travelled further west and saw thunder ... read more
