Hi, I'm Ann, I live in Gent, Belgium, I work as a train conductor for the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS-SNSB) and in September 2008 (11 September - 7 October) I first started this travel blog when I visited Quebec. I mainly explored nature, spent hours in a car with people I didn't know at first but who became good friends :-). This blog helped me to remember all the good things I came across during that journey. In 2009 my friend Hanan invited me to visit her in Syria. I still had some days off left and so I booked my ticket for December (from 5 till 19 December 2009) I explored a complete new part of the world and found lots of culture and nature in Syria and Jordan. Where ever I could, my camera joined me. Accessing internet was not always easy. To overcome this little problem I now got a tiny laptop and an internet everywhere stick. Next stop will be this June (1 - 21 June) in Sweden. My plan is to travel to Lappland, explore nature and of course take tons of pictures and update this blog hopefully every day. I hope you will enjoy this blog as you did last time. All comments are welcome, enjoy reading.
Ann.
Hi there, No no, I'm not anymore in Sweden. But as my journey ended the 21st of June, I didn't write all my adventures down so ... a little journey back in time to tell you what happened in the South of Sweden. On June 15 we said goodbye for the second time to Christine and went to the trainstation. Prices are really silly here when you want to take the train. When you pay in advance a journey from Stockholm to Nyköping would cost round €15. If you decide to go the same day you pay €30 and when you are in a hurry and don't have the time to buy a ticket at the ticket office you pay €11 more in the train. If this is what waits for us in Belgium with the

On our way down South we stopped in Kiruna about 100km from Abisko national park, an industrial town known for its iron ore. It has a very recognizable church completly built out of wood. We had a look in town and the senior year of secondary school were celebrating their graduation in a very peculiar way. Every class got his own truck with banners, they were drinking alcohol, shouting stuff, very amusing. We bought some postcards and returned to our car. Just outside Kiruna we found a sign towards the ice hotel that is built there every winter. We lost the sign but we found a very quiet place to sit and have some lunch

I really had a good time in Stockholm. So Christine helped me to get to the right airportbus and off I went for another airport, this time destination Lulea. Still overpacked but not according to the Swedish scale so no problems getting on the plane this time. I landed in Lulea just after noon and took a bus into town because I had to pick up my rental car at Avis. The bus driver put me off at a completely wrong part of town, luckily I found a nice Lulean to guide me to the correct bus station. The next bus driver dropped me off at a big

As I said in my previous text, there are plenty of things to do ... that is very true but I also noticed that I can't really bother spending all my money on musea so in stead of going to Wasa and the photography museum, I strolled around and I met Christine who finished her job yesterday around 4.30pm. She showed me around into another part of Stockholm which was more than OK. Being in a new city walking around is already an exciting thing to do I think. For the rest nothing much has happened. We had supper yesterday and had a friend over. Today we walked to another part of town and had bbq. We had 26° today which was nice but also some cool wind so

I took an airport bus and Christine, my host for this week in Stockholm, got me from the busstation. I got a tube/bus/train/boat card for a week, and I can take the subway and bus and one of the boats to one of the islands with it, so that is a nice thing. Public transport is well organised here. Basically all public transport in Stockholm can be done with the blue traveller card :-) After we put my stuff at Christine's flat, we took the tube to buy some food, had a salad at home, got back into town after our late lunch and walked around and Christine showed me around town. Stockholm is a

In a few moments I'll be flying to Stockholm where I'll stay with Christine, a couchsurfer, until Tuesday, June 7. Next I'll take an flight from Stockholm to Lulea all the way in the North of Sweden. Luckily there aren't many people on this flight because apparantly, my bags were too heavy, shame on me. I was lucky and didn't have to pay extra so hopefully I won't have any trouble with my bags once I take the next plain to the North. All your comments are of course very welcome. Enjoy reading and See you in 3 weeks :-) Een goede morgen vanop de luchthaven van Brussels Airport :-) Voila, ik ben er weer eens mee weg.
... read moreOn Sunday I felt like doing nothing much so I stayed in Sally's flat. I did want to explore the city a bit on my own and so in the late afternoon I went for a walk and followed Sally's directions towards the national museum and the arts and crafts market that is located behind the museum. A very cosy market with loads of different stuff all hand made. I bought some typical wooden damascus art boxes and strolled around to get some ideas what to take with me for presents. Round 6pm I returned home, we invited some friends and had the left overs from that delicious meal Sally made on Saturday. Since I didn't see much of the old Damascus yet, I met one of Hanan's friends on Monday morning. He was willing to

I was lucky, just like the last time, there was a car that stopped and the nice gentleman drove me in front of the bus station. Happy days :-) I took the bus at the same bus station (that got me to Petra) for a 4 hour drive back to Syria. I had my passport with me and some cash and many many nice memories and that was it. I paid the exit fee at the border (5din) and off we were towards Damascus. It was again a bit colder when we arrived in Damascus and not quite in the city. When I got off the bus a bunch of taxi drivers surrounded us and all I

After that we went to a hotel with a nice view on the Red Sea and so this morning I went for a swim in the Red Sea. Since there is a lot we have to do today, we woke up early, had a nice breakfast and took off. Round 9am I found myself amongst the fish in the red sea. I have never seen anything like this before. Again all these oh's and waauw's, this time under water. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't like water, otherwise I would have taken some nice pictures. No one else in the water where we were except me and my goggles :-) After

It's allowed to sleep and stay there but the problem is that people not always clean their mess. We found the cave filled with rubbish so we cleaned it, put our mattresses on the floor and made a fire. The next morning we had tea in one of the bedouin tents there and went back to the village. We walked through the village and after a good walk we entered Petra from the back to see some more of Petra. Unbelievable, such beauty. I thought I had seen the beauty of Petra but the treasary is what makes Petra famous. After some more oh's and waauw's we walked back to the entrance and into
