I left home at 3am Sunday morning prepared for a full day of travel. Air Asia can never be described as luxurious travel, but hey, I arrived safely and on time and that's all that counts really. I do think I have spent half my life at KL's budget airline airport, but on the upside, at least I know it like the back of my hand now. I arrived in KK (Kota Kinabalu) around 7.15pm Sunday night. It was pitch black outside which surprised me. I was late for the group meeting so I dumped my bag and quickly met up with my travel companions Katie, Heather and Soffia and our travel guide George for a quick meeting before having dinner at a Thai restaurant on the waterfront called 'The Loft'. It was good feeling to ... read more

No surprises here but I found it hard to find the time to breathe, let alone relax in the last week of school for 2011. I had to set my alarm for before 5am every morning this week. It was just non-stop go! Here’s what I did: The week began with a lovely surprise, Steve and Jenny Dowie popped in to visit Derby while they were in Broome. It was great to catch up and hear their stories of volunteering in Flores. After a quick after-school coffee catch-up I dashed home to shower before heading off to the Year 7 Graduation dinner at the Windmill Cafe. On Tuesday night the Georgia’s played our final mixed netball game for the season and ended up winning against a difficult team. On Wednesday the Year 4’s and 6’s had ... read more

Week 7 is over and I can’t believe there is only 1 more week of 2011 Derby-life. It was always going to be a sad week, my good, good friends, Bec and Caitlyn left Derby on Tuesday. Their 1 yr Kimberly adventure was over and although I know there will be more friends next year, these girls were pretty special. We had jetty drinks and a proper family dinner on Tuesday night. Then they did the ‘leaving town’ ritual and gave away their entire pantry/unwanted items to X-ray Pete and me. Wednesday was almost unbearable as the temp climbed to beyond 44 degrees. I pretty much went insane- my poor class. Thursday was no better but at least we won our netball and volleyball games. On Friday I was thrown head first into the world of ... read more

Week 6 all seems like a bit of a blurr now. The weeks are going by so quickly I can't keep up with my own life. Nothing too important to report, unless you call finishing reports and winning our netball and volleyball games newsworthy. When Friday rolled around I was again Broome bound for another girls weekend. This time we hit up a Cable Beach resort called Seashells and it's pretty darn lovely. Of course, not as classy as our last trip where we lived it up in luxury at a private villa! The pool was blissful and since 40 degrees is about the standard temp these days it was pure magic to wallow in the water for an hour or two on Saturday. We arrived in Broome on Friday night just in time to catch ... read more

You know what they say about the build up? They reckon it makes people crazy. I think the events of this week have proved that theory is right on the money. School pretty much sucked this week. I'm not going to go into it since I'm putting this online and all but I will say that by Friday I needed about 10 additional hours sleep and at least 2 nights of steady drinking to forget about my week. Moving on from school, Friday night eventually arrived. We hadn't had drinks at the jetty for ages so Katie and MJ decided we would go down and watch the sunset. There was a nice breeze which kept the mozzies away and for the first time in ages I didn't have to use any repellent. I left the jetty ... read more

Another week, another Kimberly adventure! Here's what's new: Last Monday I began a 4 week SIK boxing program. Twice a week I punch, crunch and grunt my way through 2 hours of bodily torture. Naah- really I am loving it and can't wait until next weeks session. Alaso, my French Couch Surfers arrived late Monday arvo, just as I was walking out the door to boxing. Mag and Luc were wonderful guests and we had a great couple of days swapping travel stories. I will probably get a chance to see them again when I'm in Perth and they might even visit Stronsay farm on their way to Wave Rock. Wednesday Netball was - actually I don't have a better word than wipeout! That's right we got absolutely flogged. I think the score ended up something ... read more

Week three went so fast it seems like a bit of a blur. Monday was a bit of a slog after a lovely long weekend at Barn Hill. I was right back into it on Tuesday though. In fact, all this week I got to school around 6am and was quite productive getting report comments written. The other big thing which happened on Tuesday, was that it rained in Derby. The first of the wet season and right on time- being the 1st of November and all. We did a rain dance to celebrate, although it was short lived it was definitely appreciated. On Wednesday our team played netball and afterwards went out to tea together. I finally managed a decent couple of serves in volleyball on Thursday and we hit the Boab on Friday night. ... read more

Well, Week Two is done and dusted and wasn't it awesome to finish on a Thursday- thanks Queenie. The week itself was just as busy as normal though,on Monday night Beck and I went to SIK boxing on the marsh and my muscles waged war on me for the next 3 days at least. Wednesday night was mixed netball and Thursday night was volleyball and then the staff Halloween Party. I got to bed after midnight but even though there was no work on Friday I didn't get a sleep in. I started the long weekend off by attending the Positive Steps Pink Walk to raise money and awareness for breastcancer. Everyone met up at 7.30am (attired in their pinkest clothes) on the oval for a few laps before walking to nearby Cafe Indulgence for free ... read more

No rest for the wicked, as the saying goes. So... happy that Mia was safely back in Perth the usual Derby crew geared up for another corker. Friday night was messy. Prue had a big BBQ and lots of wine was drunk. We were separated at the Boab cos they locked the doors before we all managed to get in. After another glass of wine we decided to meet up with the others at the King Sound but not before we planked a cement mixer and the new term Plonkatonk was coined. We arrived just as they called last drinks. The management informed me several times that she didn't like me playing with the Halloween displays. I obliged and found a fan (121166). Saturday morning was rough but it was Corporate Cup Day so after a ... read more

With Week One finished already it's pretty hard to believe there are only 7 more weeks before I have to send my class onto bigger and better things. Of course, weather wise it was a scorching week and during the weekend I honestly felt like I was going to melt. There was no relief despite two consecutive forecasts for rain (now I really do sound like my dad). Friday night was pizza night at Jila before a free Pigram bother concert at he Spini. It was an earlish night and I was in bed by 12.30am Saturday I continued to melt and despite trying to get some reports started I failed. Too hot for work was what I told myself. Instead I aimlessly roamed the house and garden looking for cold spots which didn't actually exist. ... read more
