Croatia Airlines flight OU493 was supposed to depart London Heathrow (LHR) at 1050am. When I woke up in the morning and looked outside; with my little experience working at London Heathrow I knew that Croatia Airlines flight OU492 would not even get to London by 1050am. This is because there was soo much fog and therefore Air Traffic Control would increase the separation between landing aircrafts and this in-turn causes massive delays. I phoned up operations and found out that the Croatia Airline flight to London had not even left Zagreb (ZAG) and was 3hours late and was getting to London only at 1315. Hence I decided to stay at home and goto the airport late. I infact left home at 1030pm when the scheduled departure was at 1050am. Don't try this because check-in technically closes ... read more

I had to wake up early because the bus to Chefchaoune was leaving at 8am. So I got into the bus station which is just outside the medina and bought my ticket and thereafter had a cheese crepe essentially like a "cheese kothu". One thing being vegetarian has done to me, I have started eating loads of eggs, cheese and oranges. Guess I got to get the protien and vitamins from somewhere. While enroute to Chefchaoune I finished Shadow of the Wind. Chefchaoune bus station doesn't look like one and you got to take a taxi to the medina. Chefchaoune is a really cute place and the whole city is painted blue. I asked the reason for this and the locals didn’t have an explanation. For example in India the cities Pushkar, Udaipur and Jodhpur are ... read more

I woke up early and went all over the old medina. Climbed a few places to get good views of the city. I was at this chicken stall when one woman came and gave an order for like 20 chickens. They took 5 live birds at a time to weigh them and thereafter put them inside this glass box. While weighing you can see the birds crapping all over and trying to fly away. They repeated this process until they had all 20 birds in the box and started a mass killing. Then they took one at a time held them by their neck and made a small cut and put them in this hole for them to bleed to death. Thereafter they put them in hot water, removed the feathers and put them in a ... read more

Woke up early as I wanted to go to Moulay Idris and Volubilis. There are no collective taxis (i.e. a shared taxi with 7 people in it; 2 passengers in front and 4 at the back plus the driver) to Volubilis but there are to Moulay Idiris. The place to get a grand taxi to Moulay is not from the same place as the other taxi, the place is in the Meknes new city and I was looking for it all over the place but couldn't find it. Finally I met two guys who helped me out and put me into a taxi that dropped me off near the Moulay Idiris taxi stand. I went to Moulay Idiris and then took the same taxi to Volubilis. I could have walked to Volubilis but decided to take ... read more

Woke up early and I went to this cafe I had seen last night. The owner was nice man and spoke English. I had something called Feve its like a lentil soup. I think anything with the right amount of salt will taste nice. Checked email and thereafter checked out of the hotel and took a grand taxi to Meknes. The trip took around 1.5hours. I met this girl in the taxi who spoke English and we got chatting. She said her dream was to go to London what a shock !!!! she was studying at the Ismail university in Meknes and her home town was Ifran. Ifran also has a big university but thats for the beautiful and rich as lonely planet puts it. But she did tell me its extremely expensive. She also mentioned ... read more

Woke up early in the morning for the sunrise. Was disappointed with the view of the sun rise guess I was expecting something different again, all what I saw was the sun rising from a dune and then saw the sun rising from another dune it was really useless. I think what’s important is to see the sun rise from the horizon and thats not what I saw. I kept walking up a dune and noticed there were 3 more bases in the adjoining valleys so I wasn’t quite alone in the area. We didn't have breakfast and we started to move to see the other villages. It was quite painful to be on the back of a camel but I couldn't be asked to walk. By this time I was a little tired of the ... read more

I woke up around 8am and took a shower. Had mint tea and had a chat with the owners son. I said what I can afford is Dhm550. He said the lowest is 650 and then after bargaining it became 600 and then I said come on I am a student from Sri Lanka I don’t have much money and that he wouldn’t have to spend much money on food because I'm vegetarian and lets do this for 550. He said let me go and check and came back after 2 mins and said ok 550 and deal. Afterwards I met Daniel from Sweden who had already spent 2 nights in the desert and asked him how his experience was and he said it was soo good he can’t explain it in words. I wanted to ... read more

The guy at the reception told me that there is a tour for 2 nights 3 days where they did the two gorges near Tenehir and the Marzhouga desert which was costing Dhm1050 or Dhm850 without a camel ride. The French couple was doing it and they required a 3rd person. Even though I heard from the French couple yesterday that they had met travellers who said it was good I felt the price was a little steep and could not spend 3 days on a tour. Instead I thought I will do it on my own. Woke up early as I had to catch the bus to Tenehir took a taxi to the bus station and bought a ticket to Tenehir, while in the bus I decided I can't be bothered walking through the gorges ... read more

I woke up around 7am, the streets were quiet and empty. I went upstairs towards the terrace where the hotel served breakfast, looking at what they offered and how much it cost I decided not to have it. Bread, jam and coffee for Dhm20 not even an omlette, no way. I walked towards the Taourirt Kasbah, went inside for Dhm10 and checked it out. I met this french couple at the Kasbah who told me about Al-Mansour ed-Dahabi dam. I had breakfast off the street nearby, Harira and Omlette is becoming my regular diet now that I have stopped eating fish. It was about a 3km walk and I did not see any dam although I did see something that resemmbled a lake. However while getting there I passed a village with children playing football and ... read more
