Woke up around 9am; I had not done any of my packing and my room was in an utter mess. I also had to go to the bank because I have been busy working double shifts to payback days my colleagues have been working for me. I had a cup of green tea which I had drunk a few days ago and the cup was still beside my bed and the green tea leaves were still there with mold growing inside. After having breakfast and packing my bags I had to make a series of phone calls to my grandfather, mother and British gas. As usual I am in a hurry so I packed 4 t-shirts; 2 cotton pants, 2 shorts, underwear, socks, a sweater in case it gets cold and soap and shampoo for the ... read more

woke up early again as the bus to J's parents place was at about 915am. The bus journey cost 30 litas and took approx 3hours. j's mum picked us up and we drove straight to the hill of crosses. Oh my goodness the amount of crosses..probably millions. I took soo many pictures couldn't get enough. It started to rain and we quickly ran back to the car. Got to J's parents place and had lunch. Lunch was a cold beetroot soup with boiled potatoes. I normally don't fancy this kind of cold soup but it was pretty good. Still prefer something warmer, so a sip of soup and warm potato makes the average temperature inside the mouth warm ;-) Then we went for a walk in the city and saw the cathedral, statue of the golden ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Trakai August 29th 2008

Woke up around 730am, took a shower and had breakfast. Finished the rest of the bread and cheese spread. Told the lady at the counter that we were checking out and left my bag under the staircase which is where people keep their backpacks at their own risk. The beauty of my backpack is I don't care if anyone steals because I don't have anything worthwhile apart from my clothes which I am not too bothered about. We took a bus to Trakai and we walked towards the Trakai palace. En-route we passed some really cute wooden houses. The Trakai palace looks absolutely beautiful. People come here to take their wedding photos too. After walking all over the Trakai palace we walked in the nearby area. Crossed this pretty dodgy bridge where the bridge is actually ... read more

J has this strange rule where you are not supposed to talk to her until she talks to you in the morning; approximately 20minutes after waking up. Apparently the rule applies to her family too... I woke up around 0640am, J was already up and she spoke to me. She had obviously woken up earlier and had already been through her hibernation period. We were taking the 0815am train to Vilnius. So had to take the bus from J's place at 0737am to the train station Kaunas 1. The train time Kaunas-Vilnius was about 1hr 50mins and it costs about 13.5 Lita's. We got into Vilnius around 10am and then looked for our hostel, "Vilnius Old Town Hostel". The lady asked us to come back around 1pm, so instead I left my backpack in the kitchen ... read more

I finished work at 11pm on the 26 Aug, got home around 1130pm took a shower and I find my housemate Allan watching TV saying he cannot sleep. I had cooked some mushrooms the previous day so I finished the remainder with some bread and finished the yogurt that was remaining too. It amazes me how lazy the people in my house are. The bin was full and overflowing the previous day; but somehow people have managed to shove more stuff into it despite it full. I put a new garbage bag had a chat with Allan and went back to my room to finish the rest of my packing. Charged my phone and the camera battery and tried to sleep. The time was 1am and I have to wake up at 0145am so that i ... read more

The bus got into Skopje at 545am. I had to change bus and the bus to Ohrid left just pass 6am. Got into Ohrid at 945am. At the bus station an elderly gentleman asked me if I was looking for accommodation and I said yes. He was riding a bicycle so we walked to his house which was a 10 minute walk from the bus station. He said he can give me a room with an attached bathroom for Euros 15 per night and a room without an attached toilet for Euro 15 a night. Vesna from Belgrade told me I should check-out Apartment Kosta as it is in the city centre and near the lake. I told him I will check apartment Kosta and come back, he tried to do a better deal by saying ... read more

Woke up around 11am and got dressed as some of Vesna’s couch surfing friends had organised a picnic in a nearby mountain called Avala. Here's a short history of mount Avala from Wikipedia... Start Avala is the mountain overlooking the city of Belgrade, Serbia, situated in the south-eastern corner of the city and offering a great panoramic view. It stands at 511 metres (1,677 ft) above sea level. The name "Avala" comes from the Arabic word havala, which means "pretty view". In the Middle Ages, the town of rnov was located on Avala. The mountain has been protected since 1859. The mineral avalite receives its name from this mountain in which it was found. A 205 m high Avala TV Tower was constructed on Avala in 1965, and destroyed during the NATO bombing campaign in Yugoslavia ... read more

I woke up around 7am but went back to sleep and woke up around 1130am. The girls Natasha, Ivana and Jelena were still asleep. Ones the girl’s woke up it was breakfast time. Ivana wanted to go to the market near her flat to get food stuff. I went with her and I bought some onions, bread, eggs and some chillie powder. After we got back, I made some “Seeni Sambol” essentially fried onions with some sugar and fried some eggs. It was nice to have some Sri Lankan food. I really miss it. After breakfast, Jelena went back to her place. Natasha, Ivana and I were going all over bus stops and education institutes pasting notices as Ivana needed to find a tenant to one of her rooms in her 2 bed room flat. After ... read more

Europe » Serbia » North » Novi Sad February 22nd 2008

Woke up at 0715 and stayed in my couch till 0730 until the alarm went. Thereafter took a shower and got ready. I left with Vesna (Vecky), she went to work and I went to the bus station to go to Novi Sad. Novi Sad is the capital city of an Autonomous Province in Northern Serbia called Vojvodina. Similar to Kosovo the difference being that in Vojvodina the people are not asking for an independent state. The return ticket to Novi Sad was quite expensive at 760 Dinars. I think there was something wrong but didn't argue as I couldn't speak the language. Seemed like a Ryan air ticket buying it on the day of travel. Novi Sad also boasts one of the biggest festivals in Serbia in July called the “EXIT” Festival. It’s a musical ... read more

Woke up at 7am showered, had breakfast and left Ves's house at 8am. When I got to the tram almost immediately there was tram No. 7 to the main bus station. Fortunately it was one of the old trams that you can buy a ticket from the driver. People as usual do look at you because clearly I don't look like one of them. Got to the bus station at 0840. The bus leaves Zagreb at 0900 and it takes 6 hours. I was hoping to find an internet cafe to download and print Natasa's invitation letter but had no luck with that. The bus left sharp on time. The weather is absolutely fantastic not cold and sunny blue skies. Scenary enroute to Belgrade was very dry aleast on the Croatia side. After awhile the tall ... read more
