We arrive in Lima (Peru’s capital city) late afternoon for lunch, a final Pisco sour and try a ceviche, for which Lima is well known. We are then given a quick tour of the Plaza de Armas at the heart of old Lima, and where we find the Cathedral, Government Palace and Archbishop’s Palace, we also witness the changing of the Palace Guard in the afternoon at the Plaza de Armas. We then end our journey here and say good bye to the group. It has been emotional and journey that I will never forget with some great people. I then continue my journey alone, spending the next 10 days in to explore Lima and it's more affluent coastal districts of Miraflores and Barranco, staying at Loki and The Point Hostel where I experience the good ... read more

In the morning we follow the Pan American Highway north to Pisco. The Pan American runs all the way from Argentina to Canada. En route we stop for lunch in the desert and have a go at sand-boarding, including a 4x4 beach buggy ride which is an exhilarating experience. This small coastal port town is renowned for its production of Pisco, the white grape brandy produced in the region. They say 'If you haven’t tried the national drink, Pisco Sour, then this is the place to do it!' And boy do we do it.. Tonight we have an evening on the town and enjoy the Peruvian seafood as well as enjoy a few more Pisco sours at the local bars. Here we also visit the Ballestas Islands, where we see sea lions, penguins and a variety ... read more

We travel north on an on an overnight bus journey to Nazca - one of the world's greatest archaeological mysteries, the Nazca Lines. I recall my uncle telling me about this place when he used to work in Peru in the mines. The lines, made famous by a German mathematician, consisting of patterns, birds, insects and animals made on the ground of flat desert,. From the ground we can make out very little from the looking tower that we pay to go up, however some opt to view from a small plane which I felt was bit on the expensive side. We also visit a Pre-Inca desert cemetery site of Chauchilla included tour, containing 1500 year-old mummies, bones and pottery on the desert floor, some of the mummies still remain in tact including hair and finger ... read more

Next we travel a rough, dirt road which goes on for miles to the Colca Canyon—one of the deepest canyons in the world. We spend one night in the town of Chivay, a picturesque village near the canyon, where we enjoy the local hot thermal baths some well deserved relaxation after the Inca Trail. With a re-boost of energy and a belly stuffed full of lama steak, we then take a tour around the canyon, stopping in beautiful villages and at scenic lookouts, where we are lucky to see the flight of Andean Condors flying over the Andes. We then return to Arequipa for to get some food with the group at a local café and then rest up before the night bus to Nazca.... read more

After a night of celebrating back in Cuzco, we take a morning flight to Arequipa. Peru’s second most important city after Lima, Arequipa is more a traditional colonial style city and more laid back pace in comparison with the capital. Arequipa has its nickname, “the White City.” as was built from a very light coloured volcanic rock. The main plaza is filled with cafés and nearby cathedral is a main feature to this quaint city, we also visit the Convent of Santa Catalina.... read more

The 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is physically challenging but worthwhile, and one of the best but tough experiences I can describe in my life. It is a 44-km (27 mile) hike, with 3 high passes to be crossed, one of which reaches an elevation of 4200m (13776 ft). The trail is often steep, and physically challenging. We depart Ollantaytambo for km 82 where we begin our walk in the footsteps of the Incas. We are met by the 20 or so local crew of porters for the 9 of us, including cooks and guide look after us well for the duration of the hike. The Porters carry the majority of the gear for the hike, we only carry a small daypack with water, rain gear, snacks, a camera, etc. weighing up to about 10 ... read more

We travel with our local guide 'Roberto' through the Sacred Valley of the Incas and visit the impressive Pisac ruins and the colourful artisan market. The day trip finishes in the picturesque village of Ollantaytambo, site of another large Inca ruin. This place has huge steep terraces guarding the Inca Fortress and is known for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. Ollantaytambo seems to be our first taste of what lies ahead on the Inca Trail. We spend the night in this small town of Ollantaytambo to catch our breath and prepare for the hike ahead the next morning.... read more

The trip from Puno to Cuzco takes the better part of the day where we travel through the high Altiplano region. As we are told, Cuzco is the continent’s oldest inhabited city and the hub of the South American travel network which we make a base, before we take on the Inca trail. It is a city filled with history, inca tradition. Here we relax and explore this fascinating city, and take time to acclimatize to the high altitude and see some of the ruins that are just outside of the city. On our first night we are also taken out by our local guide 'Roberto'' to experience the Peru nightlife. On our second day here we have the opportunity to do the full-day rafting trip which was a great rush.... read more

After a full day of travel from La Paz enjoying the spectacular views around Lake Titicaca, we arrive to Puno. We were fortunate enough to arrive on one of many Catholic feast days to witness the street processions celebrating which was televised. After spending one night in Puno, we board a boat and head to Taquile Island for lunch in a local restaurant and the chance for some shopping in the local weaving outlets. From there we head to Amantani where overnight with a local family and enjoy typical music of the area. The overnight homestay provides us an opportunity to learn more about rural life, participate in a local football game as well as embrace ourselves in local traditions. We are also taught a lesson in the language 'Aymara' to prepare us with the home ... read more

We arrive in La Paz which must of been the longest and roughest bus/train journey in the world so far. La Paz is a busy modern city and is the highest capital in the world (The city is at nearly 4000 m above sea level). The alcohol her seems to go straight to my head here and it feels hard t breathe. Seems a good place to adjust to the climate before we tackle Macchu Picchu on the journey ahead. Here we explore the city’s museums or its historic monuments, such as the Iglesia de San Francisco. We also visit some of the cities renowned markets to pick up a few souvenirs and handicrafts , including the Mercado de Hechicería (The Witches’ Market). The atmosphere on the street is an incredible cultural experience with streets lined ... read more
