January 06-07 Bryan On the 6th took my truck by to get checked out at local mechanic. I had been told by a shop in Georgetown that I needed to replace the idler arm and pitman arm. At a cost of $450. So wanted a second opinion. This mechanic said that my idler arm and pitman arm were fine but my steering box was leaking oil and should be replaced. I asked him how long it would last if I just refilled it when it was low. He said no telling how long, but could last for years. So guess I will just keep checking the fluid on it for now. It only needs to last till next summer anyway when I will be going to Europe. I have been smelling a "leaking radiator" smell for ... read more

December 14 Lost Maples State Natural Area Today went out of San Antonio on I-10 West to Boerne. Then West on 46 to Hwy 16 and through Bandera. At the intersection of Hwy 16 and 470 went west on 470 to Hwy 187. At 187 decided to go south instead of north and see what Utopia looked like. After checking it out realised there was no reason to go to Utopia unless you are just passing through it on the way to Garner State Park. So went north again on 187 to Lost Maples State Natural area. It was a little late in the season to see the changing colors of the Maple trees but still it was scenic and it was certainly wild and rugged enough. ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Kerrville December 21st 2010

Dec 13 , 2010 San Antonio to Kerrville Today my sister Laura and I took a scenic loop drive out of San Antonio to Kerrville and back. We went on I-10 west to Boerne and got on 46 west and took it to Hwy 16 which runs north through Bandera and Medina to Kerrville. Coming into Bandera if you turn left at the light downtown instead of right there will be a nice little park on the right before the river suitable for picnicking. Going right at the light instead takes you north out of Bandera towards Medina. Going north out of Medina on Hwy 16 there is a sign that says if you are towing a trailer not to go that way. Take it seriously. The road that had been level and a gentle climb ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Fredericksburg December 19th 2010

December 12, 2010 Sunday Drove thru Fredericksburg and pretty much just gave it a look over as I have been here several times before. It's a neat little town and mostly German. It is usually full of tourist walking to view the various shops etc. so you have to be careful not to run over one of them. You can park on main but I wouldn't recommend it. It is very crowded and you have to back out into a very busy main street. Better to take a right on Lincoln street just past the Chester Nimitz/Museum of the Pacific War museum and go over to Austin Ave to park on the street or at the visitor center. The visitor center is worth visiting anyway. They have public restrooms (always important if you are a man ... read more

Dec 12 Hamilton Pool To get to Hamilton Pool you go out of Austin on Hwy 71 west past Bee Cave and go south on 3238 about 8 miles. There is day use only and an entry fee. It has limited parking and in summer hard to get into but this time of year there were only a half dozen or so people there besides me. There is a rather steep climb down into the canyon but it is only about 1/4 mile down and 1/4 mile back up( with benches spaced along the way for resting). It was quite nice. I spent a good hour moving around the pool and sitting on various rocks savoring the experience. I had forgotten both of my better cameras in Georgetown so had to rely on my "snapshot" Sony ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Bryan December 17th 2010

December 9 Bryan Was in Bryan and my brother had something he needed to get at one of my sister's house. So we went to see her and visit. I gave her a cap and the retirement watch I had gotten at work for her husband. I already have 3 watches and certainly don't need any more. She made up a pot of coffee and we sat at the kitchen table and had an enjoyable time visiting. She had her tree up and it looked quite nice. I told her that Mom had told me they always had a goose in Ireland for Christmas dinner and asked her if I got a goose would she cook it for us. She said she is cooking a turkey for Christmas but would also cook a goose if I ... read more

December 11,2010 In Georgetown transitioning from being a working man to being a man of leisure. If this was a movie I did something today which would be considered highly symbolic. I removed my work bag from the shelf I keep it on and always packed and put my bag with all my audio books and audio music DVD's, and favorite movie's DVD's in its place. Then I unpacked the work bag, discarding all no longer necessary work items and put the bag away. I have spent all of today inside as it looks cold outside. It is certainly windy. I don't see anyone else moving around out there except those who need to walk their dogs so it must be cold with the wind blowing. Will take care of "inside" task today and tomorrow go ... read more

Have noticed that my tires were "humming " so took them by Discount tires to be rebalanced. The man there told me I should have it done every 6000 miles with those big tires so since it has been 12,000 miles since they were installed in April guess it is about time. Hard to believe I have driven 12,000 miles since April. One good thing about getting tires at Discount tires is that they will rebalance them at no charge. They rebalanced and rotated them at no charge. Had intended to regroup and refit and and head back out in the morning but started to sink in that time really doesn't matter that much anymore. I can take care of details at my leisure and leave to scout out Kerrville after I finish. Recon I had ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Austin » Hill Country December 7th 2010

December 07, Tuesday Got into the 20's last night. Up at 0730 and it is 30 outside now. Nice and cozy in my RV. Very quiet in the park. I wish this park was closer to San Antonio. I'd just stay here. But I've already seen everything there is to see in Austin so time to move on. Sometime later this week or early next week I'll drive down to Kerrville and check out the RV parks there. I've already done lots of homework on them on the internet and some of them look like a good place to use as a home base. Most of the parks are right on the Guadalupe River which is nice. And Kerrville is only40 miles from San Antonio. Planning on driving to Temple this morning and going by the ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Georgetown November 17th 2010

Been pretty busy the last few weeks lining things up and making preperations for traveling after I retire Dec 8. Have started visiting Texas locations in the area while I am still here in Georgetown. Have been staying at the San Gabriel River RV park while I stayed using their monthly rate of $300 plus metered electric. I have really enjoyed my stay here as it is the quietest RV park I have ever stayed in and in a very nice town. Still haven't quite decided how to work my travels the best way. Part of me wants to take my 30 foot travel trailer and part of me wants to just go in my truck with a camper top. I have taken out the rear "bench seat" out of the truck and made up a ... read more
