March 15 Yosemite - Tulare Woke up to a cold and wet world outside my truck. I was nice and snug in my sleeper but after a while decided I may as well get up and go have some breakfast at the Yosemite Lodge. I was thinking a nice breakfast of pancakes and eggs with sausage and hot coffee. So I quickly got dressed and loaded up my stuff out of the bear proof container and headed over to the Yosemite Lodge like Pavlov's dog when he heard the bell ring. What a disappointment. Instead of clean white tablecloths with attractive waitresses they had a food court........!!!! With different lines for everything and then a line for paying while your food gets cold. The Ahwahnee was not open for the season so there was no where ... read more

March 14 Mariposa to Yosemite. Loaded up the next morning and headed into Yosemite. The day started out cloudy but cleared up and became a very nice day. I started my usual climbing the steep inclines and slowing on the steep downhill slopes and curves all the way. Hard on both man and machine. I stopped in a turnout after a particularly long and steep downhill slope and smelled my brakes having a burning smell. So I found a level spot where I wouldn't need to apply the parking brake and just use the transmission to hold the truck and let the brakes cool off. This certainly got my attention and I stopped periodically on the rest of the way in picturesque spots to let my brakes cool off again. I came to a detour in ... read more

March 13 Santa Rosa - Mariposa (outside Yosemite). Got on the road around 1100 and drove south on the 101 to the Junction with the I-580 where I went East over the San Rafael - Richmond Bridge. I stayed on I-580 as it went East then South intertwining with I-80 and I880 to turn back East again finally as I-580. It goes out East through south Oakland and finally gets to Dublin. Once you get past the I-680 you can get off at Dougherty Road or Hacienda Drive. On Hacienda Drive there is a very nice and new shopping center with restaurants and an Imax theatre. Midway between Dougherty Road and Hacienda Drive on Dublin Blvd, Iron Horse Rd goes south to the parking garage for BART. From this Station you can catch a train into ... read more

March 12 - Monterrey to Santa Rosa Things didn't work out as I had planned at the Travel Lodge in Monterrey. When I had checked in I had wanted a room where I could park my truck next to it so I could unload/load it easily. No queens were available that fit my criteria so the clerk gave me a King room with a discount. Fine. But when I went to renew my room for a couple of more days a different clerk on duty then said that they had booked the King room that I was in but I could move to a queen room and stay. I was very annoyed and told her that if I was going to have to go to all the trouble of moving I may as well move up ... read more

March 11, 2011 Monterey Today went by the tourist bureau in Monterey about info on the Presidio in Monterey and the elderly lady there told me that I could not visit it as it was now a Navy base and post 911 you could not visit it. So I said OK and let it go but since then I have read in the tourist info that there is a museum in It I can visit so tomorrow I will see. I often find out I know more from doing my homework than those volunteers in tourist info centers. I drove over to Cannery Row and started to park at one of the meters there but noted that they charged a quarter for just 10 minutes which adds up to $1.50 an hour and you have to ... read more

March 10 - Los Padres National Forest - Monterey Bay Got up about 0900 and got moving. The thing about these State and national parks is that they don't usually have electricity. Most people think not having a heater is what you miss. But that's not it. I have several warm blankets and a cap for that. What I missed the most is not having hot water. Icy cold water does wake you up good though. Exceptionally fine vistas going North out of Plaskett Creek Park towards Monterey. At a couple of locations I even saw over a dozen whales frolicking in the sea off the coast. Couldn't get any pictures of them though. By the time I saw them and focused on them they had went back under. This part of the Pacific Coast Hwy ... read more

March 9 San Luis Obispo to Las Padres National Forest Took my time getting things done and loading up at the Motel 6 South in SLO and didn't get on the road till after 1100. Guess part of me wanted to stay another day. Wasn't focused I guess and missed my turn onto Hwy 1 up the coast and ended heading up Hwy 101 and didn't realize I'd missed my turn till I was almost to Paso Robles. I course corrected at Hwy 46 and took it West towards the coast. Not a total loss as on this stretch of Hwy 46 I went through some of the most scenic country I have seen so far. On 46 West I crossed back over to Hwy 1 at Cambria and headed North. The coast road kept getting ... read more

Tuesday 08 March Avila Beach and Pismo Beach Drove down to Avila Beach from SLO. Avila beach was very beautiful and had Full hookups for RV's for $45 a night. I'll bet there are many people spending their time in a "parking Lot" RV park for the same money who could be staying here and enjoying this really beautiful view. The fishing ships unload here and there is a fish market as well as a restaurant. And a very nice little picnic area. Not much else though. Still.............it really is splendidly scenic. After checking out Avila Beach went over to Pismo Beach. They have a pier there and a boardwalk as well. And ........of course......... a great view of the ocean. They did have a cheapo restaurant there that I wanted to check out. It has ... read more

Tuesday March 8 - San Luis Obispo Yesterday went by a Ralf's grocery store here in SLO and found out why so many Californians were so skinny. Cheese cost $3.99 for an 8 ounce package. I can't believe it's not Butter runs $3.69 for a lb. Sardines $2.99 a can. A small box of Grape nuts cereal $4.99. Guess I should have packed in more food from Texas. This would be a good place to go on a diet as eating less is certainly a virtue. Gas for my truck is running $4.11 a gallon for premium which is all I can run in my truck. Will catch up on the details here and then later today drive down to Pismo Beach and Avila Beach and look around. Already went by the office at the Motel ... read more

March 5-6 San Diego - El Capitan State Park Saturday - March 5 - Had a pretty long day. Drove up the I-5 to La Jolla Beach and then went North hugging the roads right on the coast. At Torrey Pines beach there was a glider port but as there was no wind blowing no gliders were flying. But a great view. They said stay off the cliff edges but that's where the best pictures could be taken from. So I stepped over the rope fence and carefully took some pictures. At Del Mar People were literally climbing down the cliffs and back up, some carrying surfboards ! There was also another beach further up the road which was flat and sandy. Encinitas had a nice beach and park as well. I stopped there above the ... read more
