North America » United States » Colorado » Pagosa Springs March 24th 2011

March 24, 2011 Pagosa Springs, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico Up drinking my coffee and thinking things over. I was considering staying another day but it's snowing , windy and cold here in Pagosa Springs which has 7126 ft elevation. I usually don't get on the road before 1100 anyway so that will give other drivers tires time to melt off any snow or ice. I was looking forward to going to Santa Fe because I was thinking I would finally get back below 7000 feet again but checked the elevation of Santa Fe this morning and it is 7260 ft............?!! As long as I am below 6000 ft seems to be no problem but around 7000 ft the altitude starts to make me short of breath and dizzy sometime. Oh well.......guess I'll soldier ... read more

Wednesday March 23 Cortez to Pagosa Springs, Colorado Drove about 110 miles today from Cortez to Pagosa Springs. That's mountain miles and quite a bit different than country miles. Another climb up and over a pass and back down into the other side. Arrived at Pagosa Springs and had intended to just pass through on the way to Santa Fe but instead spent the day looking at everything, mostly the hot springs. Found a reasonable room and am staying the night and will decide tonight if it is worth another $50 for a room here plus $25 to visit the springs tomorrow. There are 28 of them from cold river water to 110 degrees. There are no real stores in the town of Pagosa Springs. If you want groceries etc you have to drive back West ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Mexican Hat March 22nd 2011

March 22,2011 Mexican Hat Utah to Cortez , Colorado After giving Monument Valley a good looking over continued to Mexican Hat , Utah and although I had considered making a short day of it wasn't very impressed with Mexican Hat and so made the rest of the day into a "driving day" and drove on to Cortez, Colorado. Southeastern Utah was very scenic though and I stopped and took pictures ot the Valley Of The Gods from the road, and then pressed on to Colorado. I Pretty much pressed on to Cortez and checked into my motel at the Budget Host for $46.84 and called it a night after eating my dinner of a microwave baked potato and whole wheat bread with tea. I could pretty much hear what my neighbors said through the walls but ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Monument Valley March 22nd 2011

March 22 Monument Valley In Kayenta at the Best Western. Had to get a high dollar room here yesterday to get out of the dust storm. As soon as the dust storm quit it started snowing. But I've been outside and it is clear and cold now so it ought to be a great day to tour Monument Valley. That's the place you see in dozens of westerns. I'm right here at the entrance to it. I probably won't leave till almost 1100 so that will give the snow or ice time to melt off of the roads. Looks like it will be a gorgeous day ! The dust storm of yesterday stopped when it started raining and then turned to snowing finally later in the afternoon. I had sought refuge in the Best Western in ... read more

Lee's Crossing, Paria River canyon - Kayenta, Arizona March 21 It was a nice day the 20th but early in the morning of the 21 the wind started gusting hard and cold. It was blowing so strongly that it was rocking my truck. When it came morning the wind was still blowing too hard to enjoy staying another day so I headed out and got a large coffee at the Marble canyon store and headed East over the Colorado River canyon and into the Navajo Nation. The wind was blowing behind me and so it was good going through the valley but then as usual I started the usual climb up and over the pass. Once over the pass the wind immediately started blowing in my face and stirring up the dust. I decended into a ... read more

Jacobs Lake to Marble Canyon, Arizona March 20, 2011 Had intended to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon but Hwy 67 going South out of Jacob's Lake was closed. So headed East on the Alt 87 again towards Monument Valley. Lots of scenic views along the way and I got to Marble Canyon saw a sign for Vermillion Cliffs National Monument and decided to check it out. I drove in and since I had my National Parks Pass it cost me nothing. I found a very nice campground in the Peoria Canyon overlooking the Colorado River at Lee's crossing and decided to stay the day and night. So I picked a good site and paid $12. I made a nice day of it exploring the park and watching the rafters put in the river ... read more

Zion National Park, Utah - Jacobs Lake, Arizona Got a good start as I have gotten in the habit of just reloading everything back into my truck when I retire at night, and having the clothes that I will change into handy. Went back on the I-15 North to Crescent city intending to cut across on Hwy 14 East and towards Bryce Canyon National Park. However when I got to Crescent City the mountains to the East had lots of snow on them and I made inquiries and found out it was snowing on Hwy 14 and a local told me to only go that way if I didn't mind driving in snow.........Well I don't mind driving in snow but not through mountain passes and down steep inclines! So he said I could go up North ... read more

Virgin Mountains Arizona - Zion National Park, Utah March 18 Left the Virgin River campground and headed North on I-15 towards Zion. Stopped in St George, Utah at the MacDonald's to get on the internet and have a cup of coffee. Then went to the SuperWalmart there to get some groceries as no telling what would be available in the park. From St George it was a short hop North on the I-15 and then getting off on Hwy 9 going through Hurricane, La Verkin, and Springdale to Zion. When I got to Zion I used my National Parks Pass to get in and immediately went and staked out a campsite at the South Campground. I filled out the form and put the slip on the post and leaving my bright red Office Depot bag on ... read more

Las Vegas - Virgin Mountains, Ariz. March 17, 2011 Decided I wanted to stay another day in Las Vegas in order to check thing out. I went to the desk and was informed that I could renew my room for another day but it would cost me $54 a night instead of the $33 I had paid previously. Something to do with basketball and the final four whatever that is. People bet on it. I can't say I believed that to be the reason as I had only seen one other person staying there that wasn't a 20 something or pre 20 something. I believe most of the people staying in that motel anyway were Spring Breakers celebrating St Patrick's day. No professional gamblers here. In any case I have a low tolerance for BS and ... read more

March 16 Tulare, Ca to Las Vegas, NV Got on the road at 1140 intending to go to Barstow for the day and continue on to Vegas tomorrow. West of Tehachapi pass the grass was green and the hills pretty. That is because it rains on that side of the slopes as the moist air rises and so doesn't reach the west side. The west side of the slopes were brown and desert like. When I got to Barstow it just didn't impress me and so I soldiered on and continued East. I was getting down to half a tank and don't like letting my tank get much lower than that way out here in the desert so stopped at a Shell station/store and filled up but paid $4.77 a gallon. I should have waited till ... read more
