Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary July 10th 2012

The main attraction for us has been the Orang-utan rehabilitation center (ORC) and the Rainforest Discover Center (RDC) Although the main purpose of the RDC remains as an environmental education center for students and teachers, it has opened its doors to the public since August 2006. Its primary function is to create public awareness and appreciation of the importance of conserving forests, as well as the sustainable use of forest resources. We walked around the park using the Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walkway is about 300 m long with 2 towers. It is the first of its kind in the country and one of few of such structures in the world! And gives a great perspective of the Reserve and the size of the trees! There we saw the Giant Sepilok. Enormous tree! We feel so ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sandakan July 10th 2012

We flew from KL to Sandakan to have a better transport to our goal: the Orang-utan Rehabilitation Center in Sepilok.Sandakan is a hub town offering transport's link to Kota Kinabalu and to Semporna. It hasn't changed a lot since the end of the World War II, and is historical place for Australian and British. The town itself is pretty basic and grey. We just did a stop over as there isn't a lot to see in Sandakan (a historical walk with WWII monument and Agnes Keith's house for those interested), so we had a nice expresso at the Nak Hotel: establish in 1966, it provide a nice roof garden terrace. We recommend the mall as you will find a shoe repair shop very effectiv. The man repaired Clive's sandals with new glue and new stitches! Old ... read more

We spent only 2 short days in KL but we had some form of 'city lust' here.. - an instant attraction and love of KL. It is much like London and felt like a 'home from home' for us. We will come back to Peninsular Malaysia in 2 weeks time and will spend more time and visit the Petronas Tower and spend more time in this great city! We had a wander around and visited Little India: area with lots of shops selling textiles, Sari's etc. There is a clear mark of colonial style of some buildings. The Central market nearby Petalung Street - Chinatown and malls. KL is full of Shopping centres, in fact it is a shopaholics heaven... KL is a very cosmopolitan city with people, food, entertainment and culture from all corners of ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud June 29th 2012

We arrived in Ubud, our last destination in Bali, Indonesia, after a couple of hours on the bus with Perama. We choose to travel with them as we get discount (only 10%) when buying new tickets and showing the old ones. Matt and Krys advised us to look at the Temple area for a room as it was nice and a bit like Eat-Pray-Love (EPL). So we ended-up at Dewi Antara - managed by Kadek and his family. Locals live with their family and they take care of each other. We met the grandmas, the parents, his wife and baby. All the houses have a temple oriented south and by the entrance of the house to protect the inhabitants from devils and outsiders. The room for the elderly is located north when kitchen and outdoor dining ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Candi Dasa June 26th 2012

We met a retired couple - Anton and Joke (pronounced Yoka) on the ferry back from Lembar (Lombok) to Padang Bai (Bali). Originally from Holland they moved to Papua New Guinea then Australia at the beginning of the 60's and never looked back! They were renting a nice villa in Candidasa and invited us for a drink... So after enjoying our chat on the ferry with Anton and Joke we thought it would be nice to spend some more time with them so we decided to go with the flow and alter our plan and check out the east coast of Bali before going to Ubud. . On arrival in Padang Bai we decided to try traveling local style in a mini bus/bemo to Candidasa (we waited/roasted for 30 mins prior to leaving Padang Bai then ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Kuta June 25th 2012

Kuta is located on the south coast. The difference with Kuta-Bali is this is not a party town. After 1h30 min in the "taksi" and some research of the best guesthouse for us, we settle down at G'Day Inn. Jess and his wife + little Vanessa (2y old) have been very nice with us. Mostly quiet except at 5am when the Mosque starts and at 5pm when the football kicks in, people deal with their day-to-day task: fisherman, smoked fish, surfing... Most tourists come here to surf. We were surprised and sad and eventually annoyed by young children age between 8 and 10 trying to sell their bracelets each night when you are eating at the local warung (cafe) or whilst you are trying to relax on the beach but it is all part of the game. ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Padangbai June 25th 2012

We return to Bali via Perama boat to follow the journey in bus infected of mosquitos towards PadangBai. PadangBai is a small fishing town in the south of Bali connecting Bali to Lombok with the main public ferry. It sits on a small bay with 2 main beaches: white Sand and Blue Lagoon. We sayed at Celagi Inn - referred by our friend Jury whom we met at Swara. Indeed the hotel is runned by a very sweet family: Made and Ilo, and there 3 kids: Poutou, Krishna and Bartez. Mostly Made and his employee Ketut have assisted us in our requests and have been very helpful. There we met a lovely french couple: Matthieu and Krystelle from Brittany and also had a nice discussion with a Japanese couple. It is so nice to be able ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Sengigi June 19th 2012

3 days in Senggigi: We arrived at Lembar-harbour in Lombok- after 5 hours of slow ferry-boat from Padangbai. We were maybe 10 non-locals on the boat and have been some attraction to some of them. Kids don't meet Europeans that often therefore a father asked me to be in the picture with his kids, which I accepted. The toilets are pretty disgusting in this type ferry as some people have been sick or because of the waves haven't been able to pee correctly ! The best way was to lay down on the bench for the duration of the journey. Upon our arrival at Lembar harbour we went in a bemo to Senggigi - around 1hour in a bumping van. We pass through traditionnal towns and also Matarram which is the capital of Lombok large of ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Lembongan June 15th 2012

We used Perama boat to travel from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan. Perama company organize transport around Bali and the island. Cost effective and reliable, it is also possible to have some discount (10% off in majority) for every travel made with them. The journey is about 1 hour. Hopefully the sea wasn’t too bad. Through Wikitravel we organised a stay at Swara Homestay. New opening in 2012 with only 3 rooms. Due to misunderstanding and/or mis-communication, we had to find another place to stay for just 1 night. We were happy to finally stay at Swara as Made has been during our stay a great host. Always smiley and laughing, he has been genuine and wasn’t trying to get our money like all the others. Guesthouse and homestay are the best way to meet local people ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur June 15th 2012

Upon arrival after queuing for immigration and pay 25$ each for a 30 days- visa in Indonesia, we jump into a taxi direction our homestay based in Sanur - 12 km from the airport and allowing us to have an easy access with the boat to Nusa Lembongan Island our next destination. Sanur is less hectic than Kuta or Seminyak. Lots of big names of course like Hyatt or Mercure but it doesn't spoil the view. We stayed in a nice and quiet guesthouse: Sunhouse. Fanny, our host has been very helpful. She gave us good advice on where to go for food in Sanur (warung moro seriang) and booked our boat for Nusa Lembongan.
