We met a retired couple - Anton and Joke (pronounced Yoka) on the ferry back from Lembar (Lombok) to Padang Bai (Bali). Originally from Holland they moved to Papua New Guinea then Australia at the beginning of the 60's and never looked back!
They were renting a nice villa in Candidasa and invited us for a drink... So after enjoying our chat on the ferry with Anton and Joke we thought it would be nice to spend some more time with them so we decided to go with the flow and alter our plan and check out the east coast of Bali before going to Ubud. .
On arrival in Padang Bai we decided to try traveling local style in a mini bus/bemo to Candidasa (we waited/roasted for 30 mins prior to leaving Padang Bai then had our bones shaken for a further 30 mins en route to Candidasa) - it was an experience... Candidasa is a very much a tourist town full of cafes, shops and bars catering for both expats and tourists alike. Rather soulless compared to Padang Bai but a good place to base ourselves for a couple of days whilst we explored the area. We
took advise from our new friends and rented a scooter for a day and visited the countryside north of Candidasa towards Ujung and Amed. The roads are mostly good but in places there are many potholes and it felt a bit treacherous on our little scooter. However the landscape is stunning and it was worth a couple of heart fluttering moments... Our first stop was by Ujung Floating Palace, located at Tumbu Village, just 5 km from Amlapura. The complex served as a palace for the King of Karangasem and his family, especially when other royals were visiting the Kingdom.
Then we drove to Amed, fishing village in a semi-arid coast. We found black sandy beaches and a very relaxed atmosphere. Amed is in fact a series of little fishing villages with coffee-shops, warungs (cafe/restaurant) and resorts.
We ended the night stopping by Anthony and Joke's place for a drink and a chat and a lovely view of the ocean.
We are pleased to have meet this lovely couple as spending time in this part of Bali wasn't part of our original plan.
A great reward for keeping our plans 'loose' :o)
Candidasa: 3 jours Nous avons rencontré un couple de retraités - Anton et Joke (prononcé Yoka) sur le ferry à partir de Lembar (Lombok) à Padang Bai (Bali). Originaire de Hollande ils ont déménagé en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, puis en Australie au début des années 60 et n'ont jamais regardé en arrière!
Ils ont loué une belle villa à Candidasa et nous ont invités à boire un verre ... Donc, après notre discution sympathique sur le ferry avec Anton et Joke nous avons pensé qu'il serait agréable de passer un peu plus du temps avec eux et nous avons décidé d'aller avec le flow et de modifier notre plan et de vérifier la côte est de Bali avant d'aller à Ubud.
À notre arrivée à Padang Bai, nous avons décidé d'essayer de voyager en style local dans un mini bus / bemo pour Candidasa (nous avons attendu / rôti pendant 30 minutes avant de quitter Padang Bai pour ensuite avoir nos os agités pendant encore 30 minutes en route vers Candidasa) - ce fut une expérience ... Candidasa est une ville touristique pleine de cafés, de boutiques et de bars pour expatriés et les touristes. Plutôt sans âme par rapport
à Padang Bai, mais un bon endroit pour se baser pour quelques jours, tandis que nous explorons la région. Nous avons pris conseil auprès de nos nouveaux amis et avons loué un scooter pour une journée afin de visiter la campagne au nord de Candidasa vers Ujung et Amed. Les routes sont plutôt bonnes, mais dans des endroits il ya des nombreux nids de poule et on se sentait moins rassuré sur notre petit scooter. Cependant, le paysage est magnifique et cela vlait bien les quelques coups de frayeurs!
Notre premier arrêt a été par Ujung Palais flottant, situé à Tumbu Village, à seulement 5 km de Amlapura. Le complexe etait utilisé par le roi de Karangasem et sa famille, surtout quand les autres royaux etaient en visite sur le Royaume.
Puis nous sommes allés à Amed, village de pêcheurs sur une côte semi-aride. Nous avons trouvé des plages de sable noir et une atmosphère très détendue. Amed est en fait une série de petits villages de pêcheurs avec coffee-shops, warungs (café / restaurant) et des resorts.
Nous avons fini notre journée en s'arretant boire un verre avec par Anthony et Joke et avons profiter de la
vue sur l'océan.
Nous sommes heureux d'avoir accepter leur invitation et d'avoir changé nos plans derniere minute.
Cela vaut la peine d'avoir des options!
