The AT in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey

Having accomplished our goal of hiking in all of the US national parks a few years ago, we have been at something of a loss as to what to do next. We’ve just been sort of trying out places, particularly national monuments, that look like they would have good hikes, with no specific goal in mind. Recently we’ve read of folks setting a goal of hiking on the Appalachian Trail in each of the 14 states that it passes through. Eureka – a new goal. So – having hiked in the four southern states of GA, NC, TN, and VA, we now have a plan to work our way through the others. In mid August we traveled to Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey for several hikes on the AT in those states. Plans are to hit Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont in October and then Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia in late November. We’ll see how it goes.

On the next few pages I’ll recap the recent trip to New England with the usual array of pictures, most of which will have a descriptive caption of some sort. The trip started with a flight to the Hartford-Springfield airport in Windsor Locks, CT. We spent two nights in each of three small New England towns, Williamstown, MA, Salisbury, CT, and Greenwood Lake, NY, near access for trailheads for the AT. I’ll add a page for the hikes in each area. Suffice to say that while we enjoyed the hikes, they were a whole lot more strenuous than we had anticipated. They were much harder with less scenic reward than the hikes we have done on the Pacific Crest Trail and other areas out west. Hopefully the AT trails in the rest of the states we have yet to do will be better.
