07 June 2013 Having driven 2,350 miles getting to Dubrovnik we started the journey northwards and back home. We drove about 60k along the coast to the small town of Ston on the isthmus that connects the Paljesac Peninsular with the mainland. Ston historically has been important for the production of salt. In the 14th century the Republic of Dubrovnic who then owned the town built a 5.5k defensive wall to protect its investment. Some of the walls have been restored and we were able to do a spectacular walk along them for about 3k to the satellite village of Mali Ston. On the other side of the peninsular is the beautiful Prapratno Bay with a delightfully sited campsite where we stayed.... read more

06 June 2013 We approached our visit to Dubrovnik old town with some trepidation. Would it really be as stunning as we imagined? I am please to report that it was and we had a wonderful day there in lovely weather. We joined many other tourists but the place seemed large enough to absorb us all and added a vibrant air to the marble paved streets. The town is completely surrounded by defensive walls and forts built between the 13th and 16th centuries and now fully repaired following the shelling in the 1991 war. We walked along the walls and this was followed by a boat trip around their outside and across to the adjacent Lokrum Island. The afternoon was spent walking amongst the impressive buildings within the walls, visiting a couple of museums describing the ... read more

05 June 2013 We bravely had a before breakfast swim in the nearby beach which unusually for Croatia was sandy. The Adriatic waters turned out to be quite cool! The morning was spent on a pleasant walk to a 15th century Franciscan monastery set 152m above sea level and with beautiful views over to Korcula and Orebic. It was then a drive through the vine covered mountains of the Peljesac Peninsula and along some more attractive coast to the southernmost point of this trip, Dubrovnik. We read on the BBC website that many German and Austrian cities, towns and villages on the Danube and other rivers were flooded following heavy rain in central Europe. We had visited some of them and we wish them well. Several places had marks on their town hall walls showing historic ... read more

04 June 2013 Korcula Island lies beyond the Peljesac Peninsula and we took a small ferry from Orebic to its main town also called Korcula. Ancient Korcula is built on a small peninsular ringed by defensive walls interspaced with towers and with many narrow stepped streets leading up to the central square which contains its cathedral, St Marks. We had a look around and then caught a bus to the village of Lumbarda which is interesting because it is surrounded by vineyards which prettily run down to its surrounding sandy coves. We had our lunch at one of them and then by a coastal walk, bus and ferry made our way back to Orebic.... read more

03 June 2013 Our first task of the day was to visit a garage close to the campsite to get the puncture fixed. This was quickly accomplished by the very helpful and friendly owner and staff. We then drove 95k southeast along the coast known as the Makarksa Riviera which is dotted with attractive towns and villages and has mountains cascading down to the sea for its whole length. A 20k wide coastal strip of Bosnia and Hercegovina splits Croatia in two (see map). We cannot get motor insurance to cross this so were forced to take a ferry from Ploce to the Peljesac peninsula in order to bypass it. As it turned out this was very fortunate because we had a beautiful 50 minute boat ride and are staying in the very pretty small resort ... read more

02 June 2013 Split is located on the shores of the Adriatic and so after a month of travelling through central Europe we saw the sea for the first time since we left Calais. We went into the city and had a happy day wandering around Diocletian’s Palace, one of the most imposing Roman ruins in existence. It is a walled quarter which remains the living heart of Split containing a labyrinthine of streets with several interesting things to see and enjoy.... read more

01 June 2013 It’s been a difficult start to June. When I returned to the van after posting the blog last night, Wendy reported that rainwater had been dripping from the roof light over the settee which is also our bed! The rain fortunately stopped and bit of investigation showed where it was coming from but I couldn’t identify the cause, however I taped up a plastic dish to the ceiling in the hope of catching any further ingress. Soon after we went to bed the rain started again in earnest and we got further water on our duvet which meant rigging up mark 2 water catcher using a washing up bowl and the canopy rafter. This fortunately worked. When we emerged in the morning I noticed that one of the tyres appeared to be partially ... read more

31 May 3013 From the camp site it was a rather convoluted 12k trip into Zagreb requiring a 500m walk followed by bus and tram rides, so we decided to drive in which turned out to be quite straightforward and with the help of a very friendly traffic warden we found somewhere near the centre to leave the van. Unfortunately we were limited to 2 hours parking, but with the help of a Lonely Planet walking route managed to see most of the major sights in both the lower and upper towns whilst dodging the showers, Friday shoppers and other tourists. In the afternoon we drove southwards to an excellent camper stop near to the Plitvice Lakes National Park which, weather permitting, we plan to see tomorrow.... read more

30 May 2013 We drove over 300k during the day in generally wet weather. We entered Croatia (this was appropriate because we have arrived at the halfway point of the trip) and as there was nowhere else to stop carried on to the capital Zagreb where we arrived in the early evening. Surprisingly, the campsite was part of a motorway service station.... read more

29 May 2013 The Danube turns southwards after leaving Budapest and we followed its course today for about 150k. Our first stop was at a ranch called Tanyacsarda to watch a display of local horsemanship. We were lucky that an English speaking group who were on a train journey from Istanbul to Budapest and for some of them beyond, were just about to start their performance when we arrived and they let us join them. The skill of the riders and the training the horses must have received was very impressive. We left and found a patch of gravel next to the local railway line to stop for our lunch. Wendy was just preparing the food when two horse drawn carriages arrived containing the train party. Before we knew it the train also turned up. They ... read more
