20 0ctober 3013 The journey through the tunnel and across England was uneventful and we arrived home at lunchtime. This has been an interesting and varied trip which included visits to the main British and French palaces, several French cathedral towns and a number of Roman ruins, pilgrimages to several WW1 sites and a journey along part of the Lot, a beautiful river we had not previously explored. We drove 2,250 miles.... read more

19 October 2013 We got up early and followed the pleasant half our walk by a small river into the centre of Chartres where we admired the magnificent 13th century stained glass in the cathedral. It was interesting to note that there appears to be a programme of internal refurbishment to paint the stonework white as it would have been when it was first built. The remainder of the day was used in driving the 300k the north coast in dreadful weather. For the first time on the trip we used the French toll motorways. We stayed on a convenient camp site car park just beyond Boulogne.... read more

17 October 2013 We moved about 60k north, much of it on pleasant roads beside the River Vienne, to visit Eric and Pauline Clarke who live in the hamlet of Vivier just west of L’Isle-Jourdain. On the way we made a brief stop to look around the town of Confolens and its satellite village of St-Germain-de-Confolens.... read more

16 October 2013 We continued westward along the beautiful Lot valley and drove along some magnificent roads which wound there way around limestone cliffs high above the river, eventually arriving at the picturesque village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie an ancient settlement built on a rocky bluff above the waters. A 250K drive followed, firstly along the river to Cahors and the northwards to stay with Lynne Hilton who lives in a hamlet just beyond Nontron.... read more

15 October 2013 We were in such a pleasant location we decided to have a day off from travelling. The camp site owners had given us a map of local footpaths and we went for an enjoyable 7k walk. In the evening we watched England qualify for the world cup finals by beating Poland 2-0... read more

Entraygues is prettily located on the confluence of the Rivers Lot and Truyere with a chateau situated right on the junction. We had a stroll round the town in the morning before moving on along an attractive road right by the river. Then it was a turn southwards where we found an excellent country restaurant for a large, leisurely four course lunch. The detour from the Lot was to visit Conques, a spectacular medieval village set in a deep valley with the huge abbey church of Sainte-Foy, a pilgrimage site, in its middle. The organ was being played in the high Romanesque arched interior of the church and it was all quite moving. We retraced our route back to the Lot and continued to follow the river for another 50k to the pleasant rural campsite of ... read more

13 October 2013 We decided to spend the next few days following the River Lot westward downstream. To get there from Florac we went along the upper reaches of the Gorges Du Tarn, climbed out of the gorge on a steep and narrow road with superb views, crossed a plateau and dropped down to the Lot at La Canourgue. We then followed the course of the river for 50k passing the town of Espalion and othe small settlements built on rocky bluffs to stay the night at an attractive spot in Entraygues on the banks of the river.... read more

12 October 2013 We started our journey northwards along a very attractive road through vineyards and avenues of ancient trees to the pretty village of St Martin-de-Londres. It has a small early Romanesque church squeezed in amongst surrounding buildings and set on top of a hill. There was a camper stop in the village but we decided to move on and also later rejected another stopping place outside the town of Le Vigan by an ancient bridge. The mountainous road we then followed was supposed to give excellent views but unfortunately the weather closed in and we were in mist most of the time! We eventually stopped at Florac where we had spent the night about a week ago.... read more

11 October 2103 The day had an exciting start! When parking on our pitch the night before I noticed that we were on soft sand filling. On starting off today the wheels spun and dug into the sand. We were stuck! The campsite owners tried to get us out using plastic tracks but to no avail. So the girl on reception called her father who turned up in a small van that had seen better days. He appeared to be the local handyman. He proceeded to jack up the front wheels, insert the tracks under them and then tow us out of the hole. All that took the whole morning so we went into the local resort of le Grau-d’Agde where we had an excellent fish lunch in one of the restaurants followed by a paddle ... read more
