Manic Monologues

Every once in a while a door opens and the opportunity for adventure beckons you to abandon your life and cross the threshold.

That being said, fortuna has smiled upon me and given me the chance to take yet another year off from exams and papers and continue exploring the planet. So with a promise to Mum and Dad that I WILL finish my degree before I turn thirty, I purchased a plane ticket to Scotland and now prepare to pack my bag and set off across the pond to immerse myself in history, menial hotel work, and "real" beer.

I'm new to blogging and may lose interest as I have with so much else in the past. Only time will tell whether this latest endeavor will lead to a hilarious account of my European misadventures worthy of a best-selling novel or a few hastily written run-on sentences followed by 10 months of silence. Let's find out together!

Hello again avid readers. I'm happy to report that after four months of USB cable problems, lack of internet, and just plain laziness, I have finally gotten off my ass (well on it really) and uploaded photos. Check out the previous blog entries to see them. In other news, I am doing well. I'm currently living in Glastonbury with Micheal so life is good, if not a little bit boring. I'll put in aroute map because I'm bored and I'm scared to go downstairs where Micheal is in the process of rebuilding our kitchen. Who is Micheal, and why is he tearing apart our kitchen? Well, Micheal, (and that is indeed the proper spelling, inpronouncable I know) is the my new reason for being. A brief meeting the first time I came to Glastonbury led to ... read more

It’s hard to believe that two months have passed since I arrived in this quaint corner of England. And all that time without a blog entry…shameful I know…but with my departure now imminent I felt it high time to give you all some details of my daily life in the villages of East Anglia. And yes, I do mean villages. As in a severe lack of modern conveniences, thatched roof cottages, and an extremely large rabbit population. I live in the middle of an apple orchard, in the shadow of the Copella fruit juice factory, whose gentle humming lulls me to sleep every night. The house is quite large, a lucky thing as there are 20 of us living there. Fortunately I live in a small self contained flat in the house with three other girls ... read more

When we last left off, I had just returned to Edinburgh, sleep deprived from the endless dayligh that is the Scottish summer. At long last I am able to find a hostel with proper curtains that are dark and close completely. Unfortunately, it's on the day that I must wake and pack at 5:00 AM. I somehow managed to consolidate all of my variously scattered belongings in the dark and make it to the train station on time. Three trains and a glimpse of ugly Northern England later, I arrive in Salisbury. The town is quaint in a commercialized sort of way though I'll admit that it was rather boring and I was so excited about staying in a hotel with a bathtub that I spent a good deal of time just relaxing. Tuesday night I ... read more

I’m sure that everyone is dying to hear about my little romp in the Highlands, but first we must have some closing notes about Edinburgh. I won’t bore anyone with long-winded descriptions about old monuments and the like, I will just share some amusing stories (amusing to me anyways, if you get bored just scroll down). So feeling a deep need to shriek and bury my head in a stranger’s back, I decided to join one of Edinburgh’s many “terror” walking tours, along with a truly lovely American couple that I shared a hostel room with (Hi Kate and James!). Now the walking tour itself was far from terrifying, involving the usual tales of plague outbreaks, witch burnings, and murder. Edinburgh’s narrow, cobbled streets, though, are quite creepy when being led at night by a woman ... read more

First, some formalities… As you may have noticed, I am prone to exclaiming over my love of “gothic architecture”. Before we go any further, I feel that some explanation of this phrase is in order. Now, although it is fairly apparent that I hold an appreciation for old architecture, the truth is that I have little actual knowledge of architectural styles and tend to refer to any old building that takes my fancy as “gothic”. That being said, I will not tolerate any architecture buffs leaving snide comments about my forthcoming errors. Such comments will be swiftly deleted and their writers publicly shamed in future entries. And now to the entry… I arrived in fair Edinburgh this morning, greeted by gloomy rain and a cold wind. I suppose it was inevitable that I would one day ... read more

Before anyone asks...yes, you will be bombarded with Glaswegian expressions until such time as I leave Glasgow or they stop making me giggle quietly to myself. On the brighter side, my stay in Glasgow will also mean more frequent entries as I have a lot of time and free access to internet. So if you don’t like it and then you can go “away ‘n’ throw shite at the moon”! This morning saw me once more braving the front of the top of the bus as I headed out to the University of Glasgow. Being prepared for the bumps that awaited me this time, I was able to stay in my seat all the way to my destination. The University, opened in 1451, is a masterpiece in gothic architecture. That is, the main building is a ... read more

And so the blogging begins.... I arrived in lovely Glasgow on Monday after a rather uneventful flight. I was planning on embellishing the mundane adventures of my journey but they mostly involved me setting off metal detectors and walking into the men’s toilets and now that I have managed to get over the jet lag and do some exploring, it seems unnecessary. For those of you who MUST hear the embellished version however, I did write it down so you may see it when I return home. As mentioned earlier, Monday and Tuesday were spent getting over jet lag and picking up some essentials (a mobile phone and shoes). Today I ventured out of Glaswegian suburbia and wandered through some of the city’s historical sites. Those of you who recall my love of gothic architecture and ... read more

Alas...as the title suggests, this is not yet a real entry. I'm still at home, I don't fly out for another 10 days, and I don't have anything of interest to talk about. "So why this entry?" I hear many of you ask. Well, the answer is threefold. First, this entry will test my ability to navigate the travelblog site. Second, it will allow all those that I have taken the liberty of subscribing to my blog the opportunity to decline said subscription before they are bombarded with entries entitled "I was at another castle/church/pile of rocks" and the like. And finally, I've never before let a lack of anything interesting to say stop me so why start now? There seems to be a bit of confusion as to what I'm doing or where I'm going ... read more
