There are 85 photos in this blog site for Venice. We arrived in Venice Italy on Saturday morning May 17 with blue skies and great views of the area. We had booked in at a B&B in Mestre just a few miles away by bus or rail to the island of Venice. Since we arrived early in the morning, we found a location at the railway station to stash our gear for 4 hours until the time to head to Mestre. We had purchased a 3 day pass that gets you on all the bus, rail and water transportation in the Venice area. It doesn't take too long to figure out the transportation system since everything is "almost" self explanatory. You do have to pay close attention to which way the vaporettos (water bus) are going ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia May 21st 2014

The blog site for Split Croatia contains 26 photos. Split Croatia is a city on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea and one of the oldest cities in the area. It is about 1700 years old but some historians date it back to 3rd century BC. The Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian was built around the early 4th century AD. There were twelve sphinxes at the palace and were brought there after Diocletian had put down Egyptian rebellion in the late 4th century AD. Only one sphinix has survived while the rest were destroyed or thrown into the sea. The sphinx is made of black granite. We were told that it dated back to around the mid 15th century BC - the period of pharaoh Tuthmosis III. This sphinix has been here since the ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor May 21st 2014

There are 35 photos in this blog for Kotor Montenegro. By the way, if you are enjoying the photos let us know as we enjoy hearing from everyone back home. :O) This was a very pleasant surprise in our journey by boat around Italy. Actually one of our better stops! We made it around the "Boot" of Italy and watched from not too far away the landscape of that area of Italy. Makes us want to venture back to this area as it look "less traveled" by the tourists. Anyway back to Kotor Montenegro. We pulled into the sunken river valley of Kotor Bay winding our way up the river several miles to the city which sits right on the bay. Kotor has a great mountainous backdrop, in fact the entire area did as we came ... read more

Naples, Sorrento (The Amalfi Coast), and Pompeii Although I said Naples, these are photos of mostly along the Amalfi Coast, our visit to Pompeii and distant photos of Vesuvius. This was our first tour on a bus with a guide. Overall the tour was pretty good but the tour guide on the bus seemed to think he had to talk nearly the entire time to ensure we got our monies worth. Too much talk in my opinion as my brain was fried by lunch. I needed to see some of the sites without constant chatter from the guide - didn't really need to know that the Esso gas station was coming up around the next corner. ?!?! Driving out of the port through the southern and eastern part of Naples gave us the idea that this ... read more

Rome Italy The 23 photos on this site are all in Rome Italy. Wow was this an adventure. So we have not done a cruise tour yet and did not join one in Rome. We had done a bit of research about travel from the port to Rome and what all it would entail. Before we got off the ship, they really stressed to us all about getting back before 6:30pm departure as people have missed the ship due to train issues back from Rome. That seemed to scare a lot of people. So we planned to get back to the Rome’s main railway station at 3:00 giving us plenty of opportunities to catch different trains at different times. The trick we learned was there are four Rome train stations. The first Rome station (San Piedro) ... read more

These photos are all in Pisa or Lucca Italy. The first 14 photos are of in Pisa and the next 8 are in Lucca. The ship docked at the port city of Livorno. To get to Pisa you have to take a series of bus and rail to get there. Rather than join the cruise ship tours, we ventured out on our own to Pisa and Lucca. We headed away from the ship, first by the shuttle bus into central Livorno. Then hopped a bus (told by the visitor information center to look for the #1 or #2 bus) to the Livorno train station about 2 miles away. Once there we purchased train tickets to Pisa and on to Lucca. The train to Pisa took about 25 minutes. We then proceeded to do a very nice ... read more

Cannes France All the attached photos are in the Cannes area. We did not travel east along the coastline to Monte Carlo due to time constraints. We spent one full day in Cannes taking in several areas around the city. One included the historic area of Le Suquet. This is the Old Town that was about 15 to 20 minute walk from the port up a series of concrete steps winding its way past quaint homes and shops along the walkway. Very nice views were provided to us after reaching the top. We then proceeded back down in order to catch the local bus to Le Cannet another historic area that is just north of the Cannes by just a couple of miles. It takes about 15 minutes by bus - stopping at all the stops ... read more

A trip over to Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia completed our trip in Barcelona. His unfinished masterpiece is expected to be completed in 2026. All the photos attached are of Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia. After 3.5 days in Barcelona we realized we could have stayed much longer to take in all the outstanding architecture and activity available in this vibrant city. Perhaps next time we can spend more time here and see much more. The underground railroad/subway system is very easy to use and get use to. Once you get comfortable with it, all of Barcelona is within a few minutes ride. Barcelona is a busy place especially several of the city center areas. But you can get away from the crowds without a lot of problems with just a bit of walking. Great place to visit ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia May 6th 2014

We arrived in Barcelona Spain on Tuesday morning May 6 around 8:30am. We had purchased the Barcelona Pass which allows the use of bus and rail throughout the Barcelona area plus access to many venues at no additional charge. Getting into the city - out of the airport - was overall one of our biggest hurdles once we found our way to Terminal 2 and headed towards the rail to the city. Being the thrifty travelers we are, we had booked into the Mediterranean Hostel very near the downtown area. Everything we needed except for the 3 to 5 Star price. :o) It took us till the next day to completely figure out the Barcelona underground rail system, but once we cracked that nut, everything is accessible and quick to get to!! We have not yet ... read more
