In our last post we had made it as far as Kenmare. For such a small town of about 7,500 people it had a rich assortment of places to eat. Probably for all the tourists that stay in B&Bs in the area and needing nice restaurants or perhaps even bar food to keep them happy and entertained. The day started out with a good drizzle and continued that way through very early afternoon. The Ring of Kerry as the circular route that the tourist go on to see the peninsula was a big disappointment compared to the Beara Peninsula and all its beauty. It ... read more

We stayed in Cork for two nights as we mentioned in our previous post and have included the photos of some of the sites in the Cork and Cobh area. The Heritage Museum in Cobh below Cork is a not to be missed attraction. Everything you need to know about the sinking of the Titanic and Lusitania are here at this museum. Incredible audio and visuals. We then left Cork on Sunday morning and enjoyed the easy drive out of town without any traffic. New to us! We drove the very rural highways along the southern coast of Ireland working our way over to the major attractions of the Mizen Head Peninsula, Beara Peninsula, Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. The drive down through the Mizen Head Peninsula was quite dramatic with stunning views of the ... read more

Note: In this blog are a total of 45 photos. Go to bottom of this page and click on Photos. Finally arrived to one of the countries we've wanted to visit for years - Ireland. We've wanted to visit Ireland especially after seeing the movie Leap Year which was filmed totally in Ireland. Our flight took us 7 hours before landing in Dublin Ireland. Not a bad flight but getting a few hours of sleep was important as we landed at 7:00 am and hit the road with our rental car out of Dublin. You would know it that we would catch the Dublin rush hour traffic on a Tuesday morning. Good planning!!?? So we had a crash course in re-learning to drive on the left side of the road and all that goes with it ... read more

Tongariro Crossing Suggestion - If you’re planning on doing the Tongariro Crossing on the North Island (we highly suggest it), we have several suggestions for you. Plan on getting to the shuttle pick-up area about 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Then use this valuable time to locate the restroom at the pickup area so your bladder is ... read more

She’s A Born Killer - The things I have learned about Rhea on this trip have been enlightening and … scary. She’s a born killer when it comes to going after Sand Flies. Her plans - as I’ve been told regularly - are to decimate the Sand Fly population in New Zealand to ... read more

Kia Ora Again from New Zealand We are about to head south on the South Island to the deepest lake in New Zealand in Fiordland National Park and then continue south to Invercargill at the bottom of the South Island. We’ll update our blog site again when we reach Dunedin as we are heading back north along the eastern coast of the South Island. We are hoping to get over to Stewart Island at the bottom of New Zealand and see some of the bird life for which it is famous. 12-5-09 - Saturday - We left fairly early from the campground to do a few things in town. One included an overdo haircut for Larry. Rhea needed one but hers would take a bit more time and they could not take her so that cut ... read more

Hokitika, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Wanaka, Queenstown and Te Anau Hello to all our family and friends. Love reading your comments on the blog site so please keep sending them to us. Tell us how things are going back home. Hope all our Creator Family in Clinton is doing well! We just returned today from an overnight cruise of Doubtful Sound here on the southwestern portion of the South Island in Fiordland National Park. Fiordland is a true wilderness area and many parts of it have still not been explored. It rained on us Monday night (they tell us 100mm) here in Doubtful Sound - A Very Very Good Thing! - as the next morning there were waterfalls everywhere in Doubtful Sound. Rhea and I took well over 400 photos during this trip. The beauty ... read more

Golden Bay, Murchison, Westport, Karamea, and Arthur’s Pass 1. Happy Thanksgiving!! - We had a great Thanksgiving on the mountain in Arthur’s Pass. It was not exactly Turkey and Dressing but it was filling and kept our energy level up as we climbed to the top of Mt. Avalanche. Our Thanksgiving occurred 18 hours before everyone in Mississippi. So when everyone in MS was having Thanksgiving lunch, it was Friday morning at 7:30am and we were eating breakfast and getting ready for another hike. We’re doing fine but I’m wondering what my two sisters - Hope and Elizabeth - were preparing back home. I know by brother Chuck and his wife Lola were probably out exploring some wilderness area similar to what we were experiencing. I hope my sister Hope gave our Mother a great lunch/dinner. ... read more

Lake Taupo and Wellington - North Island Picton, Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park - South Island 1. Hiking on the Trails in New Zealand -Guess what side of the trail the New Zealanders and Aussies walk on. Well the left side since they drive on the left side of the road in their cars. When we got on the trail I told Rhea to stay left when meeting someone on the trail. This got somewhat complicated as so many Europeans were walking on that same side coming towards us since they drive on the opposite side of the road than NZ. So it is a bit laughable when you’re on the trail hiking like New Zealanders but keep encountering others who don’t know that you should keep to the left. 2. Lodging Costs for our ... read more
