We’re on our way to Bilbao now. We’re making a stop at La Guernica which I’m excited to see since it is the place of one of Picasso’s most famous pieces of work. Bilbao is our last stop and I think we are all relieved. At this point we all feel mentally exhausted from a constantly busy schedule and from living out of a suitcase. I’m also ready to see my sisters in Madrid. I was one of three or four on this seminar that didn’t know anyone else on the trip, which makes it a little harder. I’ve met some people I really like on this seminar though. They are all from Franklin and Marshall College in the Alpha Phi sorority (which is one I really like in Syracuse as well) so that has ... read more

Today we woke up and ate breakfast but didn’t go on our walking tour because it was raining. They gave us two hours to ourselves and then we met up again for lunch. We drove up Monte Igueldo where there was an amazing view of the city and the beach. We had paella for lunch. Fortunately by the time we were done eating it had stopped raining so we were able to tour the city. Afterward we had some more free time and we walked around on our own. We ended up taking a long walk on the beach. The tide was low and the sky had cleared up so it was a gorgeous night. Our professor told us the water was absolutely freezing but it was the warmest Atlantic water I have ever been ... read more

Today was a simple day. We traveled across the country from Barcelona to San Sebastian. We stopped twice along the way. First we stopped for lunch in Zaragoza. After that we stopped at La Rioja which is the most popular winery. We got a tour of how they make the wine and then we had a tasting (they taught us how to taste and appreciate wine properly too). What I found interesting that our tour guide said was that when you taste wine you should have an empty stomach and you shouldn’t be wearing any perfume or scented lotion because it takes your senses away from the wine. We asked her why people serve cheese and crackers with wine in America and she said it was because the fat in cheese will line your mouth ... read more

After another night with only 2 hours of sleep we woke up for a Picasso conference. I have to admit I was nearly asleep the whole time so it was a good thing I have already studied Picasso thoroughly in high school. We walked through Barcelona to get to the Picasso museum and were were able to see all the artwork we had learned about which is always more exciting to us. After that we took a short lunch break and then visited the Fundacion Miro- another artist’s museum. His work couldn’t compare to that of Picasso though. Although he had these amazing giant tapestries that were at least thirty by twenty feet, his paintings and scultures were abstract. Even though I knew his work was time consuming and used various techniques, I couldn’t appreciate ... read more

This was another pretty early start today- only two and a half hours of sleep and we were up and ready to go. We started the day off with a confrence on Guadi who I also studied during high school. His is a famous artist who created many buildings when Barcelona was expanding. We visited La Sagrada Familia- an amazing cathedral that Guadi had started to build but died before he finished that is still being constructed today by other architects. Our teacher explained all of the detailing of the building and its meaning and it was almost like the whole bible was translated into art on the outside of this building which was amazing to see up close. Shortly after we went out for lunch as a group. This was not only the best ... read more

Getting out of bed at 8 this morning was extremely easy despite staying out until 6:30. I’m pretty excited about going to Barcelona obviously. Before we could take off for Barcelona we had a conference about Dali. He is such an interesting artist. Fortunately after having a long conference about him we were able to stop at his museum in Figueras before arriving in Barcelona. I wish I could have taken pictures of his work but you will just have to believe me when I say it’s the most unique and interesting collection I’ve ever seen. He created such a variety of pieces; I was in awe that he could do everything he did in his lifetime. There were huge sculptures and paintings and the museum seemed to go on forever. It was amazing to see such ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Girona August 25th 2012

Last night we went to bed around 5 in the morning and had to be up at 9. It was a little hard but well worth all the dancing we did in the beautiful forest. We toured Girona today. First we had a conference on Medieval Spain. After that we traveled to Centro Judio Bonastruc, which is a jewish museum. We had another conference there called the Jews in Girona. There was so much history in this city it was interesting to learn about. We then visited Medieval Girona. We went to Catedral de Gerona (Gerona Cathedral), Banos Arabes (Public bathrooms which were a lot different than any public bathroom I’ve ever seen), and Muralla. Everything was so beautiful and so different than the more city-like feel where our hotel was located. The detailing ... read more

Visitamos a la Tarraco Romana como anfiteatro, circo, y el museo arqueologico. Today we visited La Tarraco Romana. We went to the anfiteatro, circo, and the archeology museum. The anfiteatro is where the gladiators would fight either each other or animals in front of an audience. They had rooms called “vomitario” which is where spectators were allowed to throw up if the sight or smell of these battles was a little too much to handle…we definitely don’t have those in America. The circo is very small after years of erosion. We only saw one section of it because the rest has been destroyed. The circo is where they had chariot races so it used to be a huge circular arena. img=https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151391296749428&set=a.10151383260394428.570513.693919427&type=3&theater Even though the circo was almost all gone, what did... read more

This was definitely the longest traveling I’ve done. We took a plane to Madrid where we switched planes to Barcelona and then took a bus to Tarragona. It was well worth it though. The view from our room is gorgeous. We can see the whole city and the beach as well as old Roman ruins. Once we got to our room we immediately changed and went to the playa. The water was calm, clear, and cool enough to be refreshing but warm enough that we were able to stay in the water for 3 hours. After the beach we went back to our room and showered and took a siesta before dinner. We went out around town for a little while that night and my roommate and two other girls sat outside and had some wine ... read more
