South America » Colombia » Bogota July 12th 2009

So on Friday 26th June we went into Colombia really being amazed from the friendliness of the people from the very first moment on. First we made a stop in the City of Cali which is said to be the salsa-mekka of Columbia. Indeed it has a sprawling nightlife and people love to dance. And the really can dance, which would have required more salsa-skills from us. However we did our best and had a lot of fun there... So on Sunday we even got early and went on a 12 hours busride to Bogota - a real highlight. We got a couchsurfing host by Hernan. This really great guy offered us more than just a place to stay over for 4 nights. We had a lot of fun with him and he showed us really ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima July 7th 2009

After we left Cusco we went on to head further north. A 20 Hours busride brought us first to Peru's Capital Lima situated in the desert on the west coast. The city doesn't have much to offer but really crazy heavy traffic and a rather unspectacular old town. One of the most worth seeing sights there is the waterpark that is colorfully illuminated in the evening. So only some 24hrs after we arrived in Lima we went on the 8hrs busride to Trujullo, a cute little town north of Lima, with some colonial buildings and some archeological sites around (which we did actually not visit due to the bad weather and little time). On Sunday evening (21 May) we went on the way to Ecuador. Overnight busride - border crossing - another 12hrs busride - arriving ... read more

South America » Bolivia July 5th 2009

Finally I managed it to re-upload the lost photos of Bolivia one... Ok we left Sao Paulo on the 22nd of June and went on 20hrs busride to Corumba at the boarder to Bolivia. The border crossing was literally like stepping into another world. I never experienced a difference like that between two neighbour countries before, as we suddenly found ourselves in a much poorer country with a significantly different culture and lifestyle. We only spent the afternoon in the bolivian border village of Quijarro in order to watch the Champion's league finals (which was actually quite difficult to manage there) and then we went on a overnight-train-ride to rainy Santa Cruz. Nice city, but due to the bad weather we only spent one night there and then we went on a really exhausting 16hrs bumpy-overnight-busride ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu July 3rd 2009

We went from Lake Titicaca to Cusco on Wednesday 11 May. From there we started the Inka Jungle Tour to Machu Picchu. It is an alternative tour to the overrun Inka Trail, that leads through the really stunning jungle landscape around Machu Picchu... On the first day we went down a really scenic road per Mountainbike. Day 2 lead us on a nice 8hrs walk through jungle and canyons. On day 3 we went on to the nice little hidden village "Agua Calientes" that is the next village to the Machu Picchu site. From there we took a hike up a steep hill, from where it is possible to enjoy a nice view on Machu Picchu from the distance. On the last day we got up early at 4am in order to be up at the ... read more

We just spent a night in Copacabana after arriving and got up early the next day to catch the 8.30 boat to Isla del Sol. This little Island in the huge lake Titicaka is really very nice! Landscape is really beautiful - just have a look at the pictures. We did the nice one-day walk from the northern end of the island to the southern end. It is not really a long one and even though the Lake and the Island are at some more than 3500m the walk is not too strenous. On the way back the boat stops at some floating island (set up as a demonstration only). Floating islands on the Peruvian side are supposed to be much bigger tough. All in all a really nice walk on isla del sol surrounded by ... read more

(I made this Blog entry down in Lima with a faster internet connection. Therefore enthusiastically I uploaded many many fotos... :) BOLIVIA After a 20 hours busride from Sao Paulo to Corumba, we crossed the border on 27th of April in the morning. This was honestly like stepping from one world into the other from one moment to the other. We only spent one afternoon in the border-village Quijarro, where we somehow managed to watch the Champions-league-final... with some difficulties. In the evening we went on a bumpy train-ride to Santa Cruz. Interesting , but exhausting. We spent one day and one night in rainy Santa Cruz in order to go on to 2700m high Sucre on May 29th. This busride was actually one of the worst we ever had. 12hrs bumpy overnight in a really ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz June 9th 2009

We arrived in La Paz on July 4th not having seen the saltflats due to the roadblocks. The city of La Paz is quite nice and interesting. I was pretty impressed when we went the way down from the nearby city El Alto having a great view over the whole city situated in a bowl surrounded by a stunning landscape. Life in La Paz is quite vivacious with a variety of cultural offer and lots of markets. On Saturday the huge folk festival "Gran Poder" took place with loads of colorfully dressed people dancing and marching down the streets accompanied by loud brass bandas from about 7am to 11pm. On the same day we went to watch the World Cup Qualifying Game between Bolivia and Venezuela to see how football feels at an altitude of 3650m ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo June 8th 2009

Sao Paulo So on Friday 22 May we went on from Rio to Sao Paulo (via a day-trip to Ilha Grande, photos to be provided later). We arrived then in Sao Paulo on Saturday morning, where we first had a sleep after a busride that was not too comfortable. Some people might not tell the best stories about Sao Paulo as it is somehow said to be a just a big business-city in which everyone is in a hurry all the time. Ok, that might be the one side of it, but however, with the other better sides I really like the city. Life there actually is very vivacious in a positive way... of course we are in Brazil ;) Beside having a good nightlife (reportedly better than Rio) Sao Paulo has a good cultural life ... read more

The Iguazu Falls: Some of them say they are marvellous... some of them say they are just another bunch of waterfalls. I have seen a lot of waterfalls so far on my travels and before I got to Iguazu I was not sure how impressive this would be gonna be. Actually it is another bunch of waterfalls. But it is a bunch that big, that it really impressed me a lot. It is like a whole landscape of waterfalls sourrounded by beautiful woods, rivers and valleys (I just uploaded a lot of different waterfall pictures as there are so many different ones. However it is difficult to show the beauty of the National park in pictures). And once you get to the viewpoint of the main falls, you get stunned by that impressive big waterfalls - ... read more

La Boca - the district of the workers and rather poor people in Buenos Aires. This Barrio has a very certain flair - of course also because of the the stadium called Bombonera situated quite in the middle of the barrio, located just very close next to the houses. The well known "Caminito" is just a touristic place that does not really represent La Boca. Boca itsself is considered to have some dangerous streets when its dark. So it is good to be careful and listen to the friendly people in the shops telling you where to go and where not to go. The Boca Juniors Football team is one of the most well known and popular teams in the world - their fancrowd is amazing - over actually more than 90 minutes they are singing ... read more
