Saturday, August 1st At 8am we woke to a beautiful sunny day. By 9am it was raining. At 10am when we arrived at Tony and Siubhan's hostel it was sunny again. We all got into their little Suzuki jeep and headed to Reglan, a holiday town on the west coast about 50km from Hamilton. The drive was beautiful, but as we got closer to Reglan the weather deteriorated. We drove through town and spotted loads of kite-surfers frolicking in the waves. They must've been freezing out there! By the time we got to the beach it was raining a little and very windy. Undaunted by the terrible weather we donned our rain-coats and set of for the beach. It's a wonderful big beach and we'd love to come back in summer. Today, however, was not a ... read more

Thursday, July 30th Our plan for the day was to drive to Hamilton and meet up with Siubhan and Tony, our Irish friends. Before heading that way we went shopping for supplies at the Pak n Save (like Makro in SA). We were lucky to have Mel with us. She showed us all the best value brands to buy, so we didn't have to spend too much. Back home we had a quick lunch and packed all the stuff into the van. At 1pm we set off south for the 140km to Hamilton. Before we got far Mel phoned saying the courier company had delivered a note saying that Ferdi's guitar was ready for pickup at their local offices. We turned around, picked up the slip and headed to their offices. It was only a small ... read more

Monday, July 27th We've started to set an alarm so we're able to wake up before 8am. Crazy thing to do when one's on holiday but hey... It's the only way to get used to the new time-zone. This morning we just couldn't get out of bed so the alarm was turned off and we stayed in our warm bed a while longer. We've found that Keira loves Ferdi. We suspect it's because he's such a softy and she can "bully" him into pretty much anything. Whenever she sees him she shouts his name and laughs. Sometimes she just walks around shouting "Ferdi! Ferdi!" over and over. She has this ritual where she pushes him into her play room, empties her jar of plastic animals, plays with her dog and doll and generally makes a mess. ... read more

Friday, July 24th We spent the morning researching campervans and came to the conclusion that, for us, hiring a van is a better option than buying, even though there are a few good deals out there. The hire is really affordable and includes insurance and 24 hour roadside assistance which will come in handy if something should go wrong on those deserted south island roads. There were a few vans to choose from and after a bit of thought we decided to get one without the toilet and shower because it's cheaper and requires less maintenance. Later we went for a hike to Grannies bay. On the way we had to cross a little river. Talita made it across the loose rocks but Ferdi managed to slip off and had to hike the rest of the ... read more

Monday, July 20th Kuta really is a party town. Some people here only go to bed when the sun comes up (sounds like a couple of good guys we know and miss back home). Our last day in Bali (and South East Asia) dawned rainy and cool. Soon the cool left but the drizzle hung around for a while longer. We packed, watched a movie on TV (Wayne’s World, what a laugh!), then checked out, leaving our luggage at reception. We found a restaurant where we hoped to spend the afternoon but all too soon we were boiling and decided to walk around and try to find a way to amuse ourselves. We had eight more hours to kill and if you're not drinking, shopping or surfing there isn't much to do in Kuta. We ended ... read more

Saturday, July 18th We left Sanur early and headed for Kuta, Bali's party town, located to the west of Denpasar. If you're looking for a party scene with drunken college kids and surfers, this is the place for you. We, however, only came to drop off the Jimny and see what it's like before leaving Bali. Most importantly, it's conveniently close to the airport. On the way we took a wrong turn and ended up at a big surf shop. We both needed a pair of long trousers for NZ so we checked it out. Talita got very cheap jeans and Ferdi got a pair of cargo pants. Then we continued on to Kuta. We drove around and around and around, trying to orientate ourselves. Finally we got our bearings but then missed the turn-off because ... read more

Thursday, July 16th We had a wonderful nights sleep and woke to the sound of the waves crashing on the first white beach we'd seen since coming to Bali. Ahhh... sweet bliss. With stiff legs we stumbled down the stairs to breakfast. Afterwards we said goodbye to Tani, because she was catching the shuttle to Ubud and we were of to Sanur, a coastal area in eastern Denpasar. There's something about Padang Bai. We don't know why, but we both really like the town. Maybe it's the nice room, the view, the good restaurants and the tons of dive operators that made us sad to leave. Unfortunately it's way too expensive to stay here so we set of for Sanur. The road started out as a nice double lane but soon faded into a more typical ... read more

Tuesday, July 14th Today we had to say goodbye to Ric and the nice people at Ocean-Sun because we were off to climb the volcano, Gunung Agung. When we tried to pay, their credit card machine didn't work and we didn't have enough cash, and since this part of Bali has very few internet providers and no ATMs at all, we had to take their banking details and promise to pay the balance into their account when we arrive back in Denpasar. Pain in the butt, but what can you do? We were told that the nearest ATM was in Amlapura, a town en-route to the volcano. After a few wrong turns we eventually found a bank but we couldn't get any cash. We continued driving around in the hope of finding another ATM, because if ... read more

Saturday, July 11th We had a lazy day reading, washing clothes, snoozing and snacking on delicious pineapple pancakes covered with honey and ice-cream. After a nap we found a resort that sold the wi-fi credits we were looking for (it cost three times as much as the same credits in Lovina! Ouch!). What’s weird is the lack of wi-fi in Bali. This is such a huge tourist hotspot and yet there are almost no wi-fi service providers. Even in Vietnam, which the rest of Asia considers to be a little backward, you can't turn around without running into a free wi-fi hotspot. Anyway... We decided to enjoy a snack and the lovely view of the beach from the resort's restaurant. We had a Lassi (yogurt fruit shake), a pizza and tea while the sun set. Our ... read more

July 8th This morning we snorkeled the Drop-Off. It was an interesting spot with little shallow coral and plenty of fish. Highlights were one Nudibranch, three small Black-Spotted Toadfish and one big Barracuda. Back at home we napped and read most of the afternoon, then went hunting for wi-fi airtime. We were unable to locate a place where we could buy some credits but ran into a South African guy. We started chatting and soon his girlfriend joined us. Sean and Wendy live in the UK and they're also traveling for an extended time. After a brief chat we said goodbye and went home for dinner. When Sean and Wendy went on the prowl for dinner they found us sitting in our restaurant and joined us. They've traveled extensively and have the craziest stories. After hearing ... read more
