July 5th After a delicious breakfast we said a sad farewell to Kuba Lalang. Of all the places we've stayed on our travels, this was by far the best (and not even close to the most expensive). Our time here has been like a second honeymoon and we'll definitely return one day. Just before noon we set off east toward Tulamben. We were warned that there's no ATM there so we stopped for a fat chunk of cash in Singaraja. Once outside town the road condition deteriorated rapidly. We were bouncing all over the place and couldn't dream of averaging more than 60km/h. Around lunch time the constant shaking had our bladders screaming for release. We spotted a sign to Poinciana Resort where we stopped for lunch. It's a small and gorgeous resort. There's a sparkling ... read more

July 2nd After we enjoyed our last breakfast on our veranda, we packed our goodies, hopped in our Jimny and set off for Lovina, a town on the north coast of Bali. On the way we picked up another tote bag to put our shopping in. We've accumulated a few things since our arrival here and need a spot more space. Driving on these roads isn't as scary as we had thought (we've survived the streets of Vietnam after all). You just have to know that people insist on overtaking on blind corners and hills, and drive with at least half their car in the opposite lane. When you drive with this in mind you'll be okay. After navigating through the traffic we finally left the city area and wound our way into the mountainous inner ... read more

June 29th After breakfast Talita went into high gear and quickly arranged a rental car for our stay in Bali. The public transport here is too expensive if you're a tourist (because the rip-off factor is pretty high here). It's a little more expensive but much more convenient to have our own car because we want to travel all over the island and be able to stop and take pictures whenever we please. Later we went to the Internet shop to catch up with some blogging, but Travelblog was having issues so we went walking around town. At one point we were lured into a temple where they dressed us in traditional sarongs and then tried to extort a large amount of money from us. Angry at their way of doing things, we left. We really ... read more

June 27th Five months to the day after first crossing into the Northern Hemisphere on our trip, we were going to cross the equator again, back to the south. We got a bemo (tiny mini-bus) to the airport, 5km away. It was so tiny we struggled to get our backpacks in. After checking in for our multi-million Rupiah flight we had a long wait in the airport lounge. We saw one other white guy! Amazing! We finally left Tarakan, flew over the equator, had a brief stop-over in Balikpapan, then left Borneo for good. As we arrived in Surabaya, the capital of east Java, we had to set our watch, phone, laptop, video- and three digital cameras back one hour. One might say we have too many time-pieces... Once off the plane we checked with all ... read more

June 24th It's done! We've moved our flight back to South Africa to the 7th of October. Robbie at STA Travel in Hatfield made the change in the blink of an eye. The best service we got in all of our travels comes from South Africa. Makes you think... Today's the day we leave Malaysia. We're heading to Tarakan in Indonesian Borneo, the province also known as Kalimantan. Though we had enjoyed Malaysia a great deal, we feel ready for something new. After breakfast we walked around, looking for take-away lunch we can enjoy on the boat. We saw an electronics store. All thought of food ceased. We went in. We liked what we found. We walked out with a new Sony W290 compact digital camera. Okay. Y'all probably think we're shopping crazy, but we're not... ... read more

June 22nd Today we're heading to Tawau, a town two and a half hours west of Semporna. After breakfast we packed the last of our things and walked to the mini-bus station. These buses only leave when full so we were prepared to wait a while. We didn't sit for more than 5mins before we left, even though there was only three other passengers on board. We drove around the block and picked up another three people. Then we stopped again near the mini-bus station and sat in the boiling vehicle for 10mins while we waited for more people to join our little gang. The bus filled slowly but surely and before we were totally boiled we left again, this time with a full load of passengers. We were excited to be moving on again. The ... read more

June 20th We apologize in advance for the boring blog that follows. If you're not diving there's nothing else to do here. We did some research about Malaria and the threat of infection in Indonesia. The symptoms are almost exactly the same as flu, so we were worried that our recent illness and exhaustion might be more than just a simple case of the flu. You see, we hadn't planned on being in Asia this long and ran out of Anti-Malaria medication a couple weeks ago. We decided to visit the local clinic just to be sure. After a short wait the doc could see us but he couldn't do a malaria test. Since neither of us were currently running a fever he wasn't too worried about it being malaria and gave us some pills for ... read more

June 18th Today's dive sites were at the reefs surrounding Bohayan, an island about an hour east of Semporna. Rumour has it that there is about 25 Pygmy Seahorses hiding amongst more than 200 sea-fans. We hoped we could find at least one. The first dive was at Pygmy Point and it was a drift dive next to a wall of coral. We saw Scorpionfish, Clown and Titan Triggerfish, Bluespotted Stingray, different Nudies, all against a gorgeous backdrop of lush sea plants and corals. The site did suffer from a severe absence of Pygmy Seahorses. These little guys are about 1cm high and look just like the sea-fans they call home. There's not much chance of spotting one without spending a lot of time staring at various fans. The second dive site was called Green Marker. ... read more

June 15th Talita woke feeling very queasy and Ferdi's cold wasn't getting much better. We felt a little used up and exhausted. Diving three times a day takes its toll and we're definitely not diving fit yet (yes, were surprised about that too). We felt we need a vacation from our trip. Maybe we're suffering from a bit of "Travel Fatigue". We were scheduled to go diving again but after a small breakfast, consisting only of fruit, Talita felt too sick and we canceled the dive. Scuba Junkie is amazingly flexible and we had no problem moving the dive to another day. We spent the morning indoors and later moved (again!) to another room. We'd had enough with the relentless shuffling (we're not a deck of cards after all) so Ferdi went to book us into ... read more

June 13th We had the day off but were woken early by the singing, wait... no... howling of someone thinking he/she (we couldn't even guess the sex of the vocalist) is Pavarotti or someone. After breakfast, feeling very lethargic, we caught up with the ton of correspondence we got while on Mabul. Thanks for all the pics and news from home! It was fun to catch up with all you guys. We were delighted to hear from Reefers Diving in Koh Pha-Ngan. They had stumbled upon our blog and really liked some of our pics. They also used a picture of us diving for their new brochure. We're almost famous! The heat and lack of a breeze quickly had us exhausted and we had a nap before lunch. When Talita finally managed to drag Ferdi out ... read more
