Friday, May 22nd We woke early to finish packing and have breakfast. We loaded our heavy packs onto our backs (to be honest, they're not that heavy, just bulky), checked out of the Trekker Lodge, and walked to the nearest Monorail station where we got a train to KL Sentral station. Here we asked for taxi fares to the airport but everyone we asked charged double what we paid for our taxi ride in the opposite direction. We walked on and found, to our delight, an AirAsia bus (for cheap cheap) heading to the LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal). By 8:30 we were on our way. More than an hour later we finally arrived. During the ride we'd gotten rather nervous cause it took so long. We just hoped and prayed that we'd get there on ... read more

Tuesday, May 19th We woke up late and after breakfast walked to the Petronas Towers to get tickets to visit the Skybridge on the 42nd floor. The earliest available time was 6pm so we got the tickets and went to walk in the KLCC park nearby. We're kinda in limbo right now, waiting for our camera's dive case to arrive. Apparently it's waiting to clear customs and we should have it in a day or two. Luckily there's still a few things to see around KL so we wont get bored. After lunch we went to watch another movie, Push. To Talita's delight, we're going to movies more often here than back home. After the movie we discovered an indoor amusement park with a roller-coaster, various rides and cotton candy. We had a blast! The "Supersonic ... read more

Sunday, May 17th We got news this morning that little Peanut, one of our moms beloved cats back home, lost his battle with cancer on Friday. He was a very special kitty and we loved him dearly. He could never jump onto a table without knocking something over and his back legs had a life of their own, never going where he intended. We will miss the little boy a lot! May you rest in peace Peanut. We went in search of fruit for lunch and ended up in Limau Limau Cafe. Only after ordering our fruit shakes and platter did we realize that this cafe is dedicated to cats. If you go deeper in there's a wall filled with framed pictures of cats. The logo of the cafe is also a cat. On the computer ... read more

Friday, May 15th We got up early to pack and grab breakfast because we had to catch the local bus to Kuala Lumpur at 8am. From there we'd take another bus to Melaka, two hours to the south. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Cameron Highlands. The memory of these cool and beautiful hills will stay with us a lifetime. We're loving Malaysia. The abundance of Indian food might have something to do with it, and for vegetarian Talita it's wonderful to have options for a change (after three months of eating veg-rice and veg-noodle she needed something different). Ferdi's not complaining either. The food is just sooo good (maybe a bit too good, by the look of our bellies). The local bus was really nice, it even had assigned seats. This was new to ... read more

Thursday, May 14th It had rained the entire night and we were resigned to spend the day in bed instead of hiking. Lucky for us the rain subsided and after breakfast we took a taxi north to the Sungai Palas BOH Tea Estate. The plan was to hike through the estate moving up, and over, Gunung Brinchang, a hill above the estate, and then all the way back to Tanah Rata. The drive up the winding main road took a long long time and we got a little worried. We might have been a bit optimistic in our planning. It felt very far. The taxi dropped us at an intersecting road in the middle of the estate. One road lead up to Gunung Brinchang, while the other lead down to the tea centre & factory. A ... read more

Tuesday, May 12th We had hoped that during the night our clothes would dry, but not all of it did. Damn humidity! We packed, had breakfast then got on a mini-bus to the Cameron Highlands, about seven hours to the west. We had hoped for a big bus because they're so much more comfortable, but no such luck. Another bone-rattling ride lay ahead. We hadn't planned on leaving Taman Negara so quickly, but we've decided to also visit the town of Melaka in south-west Malaysia before returning to KL. Why not see a bit more of the country while we're here? The first five hours of the trip went by in a flash because the young lady sitting next to us is an American who grew up in Zimbabwe and the US and is currently living ... read more

To all the mothers we know, but especially ours, we'd like to wish a wonderful mothers day! May God bless you and may your families spoil you rotten. Wish we could be there. Thanks for being such great moms! Sunday, May 10th Last night we had to sleep with our balcony door open because the AC had no remote and the default setting was too cold. This town goes to bed real late so after a night of many disturbances we woke early to the strangest sound ever to come from a chicken. We vowed to have our revenge. We had asked to be moved to the first fan room to become available so we quickly packed just in case they want to move us while we're gone, then headed to the bus stop. We waited ... read more

Friday, May 8th Today was another day filled with preparation. This is why we avoid planning ahead. You end up spending tons of time preparing. It easier to just pitch up and arrange things as you go. In this case, however, we had no choice. Space on Mt Kinabalu is very limited and you can't get a climbing permit without accommodation so we had to book early. This meant emailing back and forth to find a date and price that we could live with. It's the most expensive bunk-beds in the world but we have no choice. You wanna play, you gotta pay... We also needed to lighten our bags. They have mysteriously grown heavier and heavier as we've been traveling (and after walking all over KL at night with those heavy packs we were very ... read more

Wednesday, May 6th Did we mention that it's hot here? Well, hot isn't really the right word. Scorching is more like it. And the humidity! Phew! We're moving closer and closer to the equator and it's getting hotter and more humid with every kilometer. Even after 100 days in the tropical heat we're still not used to it. And we're from Africa... not exactly a cold place. We're starting to re-think our attitude toward air-cons. They might be man (and woman's) best friend after all (our apologies to dogs everywhere). Kuala Lumpur (like all the cities in South-East Asia we've visited) is a strange mix of rich and poor living side-by-side. Unlike South Africa there's seemingly little crime or hatred between the classes. There are these super expensive hotels that stand right next to dilapidated ghetto ... read more

Monday, May 4th After a night of crazy dreams we did our final packing, visited our favorite bookstore one last time, ate our last lunch in Thailand and checked out of our hotel. We're very excited! We've got big plans for Malaysia! We took a taxi to the airport and when we checked in they refused to let us fly until we bought a plane ticket leaving Kuala Lumpur (KL). It really is the most retarded law. What if we wanted to leave by bus? Or train? Or car? It really ticked Ferdi off, but in the end we believe it will work out for the best. We wanted to spend five days in KL and then fly to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo, but the tickets were too expensive so we decided to fly on ... read more
