Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 We headed into the hills 90mins drive from Chiang Mai for a three day trek in the jungle to meet the hill tribes, do bamboo rafting and ride an Indian elephant! The rafting was great. The "pilot" stood at the front steering with a bamboo pole while we stood or sat along the length of the raft. We then hiked up the hills into the jungle. It was quite a climb. One of the french girls was sick so Talita encouraged a slower pace with more rests since the guide up front didn't understand anything about a good pace for sustained climbing. Camp was right next to a gorgeous waterfall and we all went in for a "shower" in the freezing water. The hut is open at both ends and has a ... read more

Monday, February 2nd, 2009 We've probably said it a hundred times since starting this trip: "This is the only way to travel!" We're amazed each day at just how natural this kind of free traveling comes to us. It's fantastic! We're loving it!!! We're also learning about each other, what trigger points we each have, how to better handle stressful situations as a couple, keeping a budget, loving each other and being kind even when we're exhausted etc. We are growing closer and closer everyday. After a very noisy but somehow restfull night we set out fairly early for some sightseeing. We started with our first Túk-Túk ride to Wat Phra Mahathat where we saw the buddah head entwined in vines. We then went to Wat Ratburana (more of the same pointy things called chedi) followed ... read more

Friday, January 30th, 2009 After waking late again went headed down the street on the prowl for breakfast. We found a Thai-Muslim ''cafe'' that didn't serve breakfast but they did make us some wonderful fried noodle with vegies and chicken for Ferdi. Later we went in search of a barber so we could make Ferdi look less like a werewolf. We found a nice barber shop / Internet Cafe where Ferdi had his 1st proper hair & beard cut in probably 15-20 years. We also needed to find Cutex and remover, nail clippers and some hair bands since Talita's gear box stayed behind in SA. We found a 7/11 that sold the stuff we needed and, to our great surprise, beer at half the price the hostel sells it for. We eagerly grabbed some beer, only ... read more

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 So we're off on our big adventure! Sold almost everything, put on our backpacks and there we go! But... They won't let us fly because we don't have an itinirary they approve off, explains the less than friendly clerk. Eventually a senior officer okays our leaving and we depart JHB at 14:10, flying Emirates to Dubai. On the flight the old Thai man behind Ferdi has a fit when Ferdi reclines his seat. Later he proceeds to smoke in the toilet and there's a huge ruckus with threats of arrest and security and stuff. We're off to a great start. Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 We arrived in Dubai at 12:15. The airport was busier at midnight than OR Thambo at it's busiest. We bought Belgian chocolate, Scottish shortbread, sleeping pills, water & ... read more

This is such a divine message and truly our outlook on our journey and life together as husband & wife. After purchasing our flight tickets today, we realised there is a whole big world out there for us to explore and be shaped by experiences and life lessons that God has planned for us. Author, Thomas Kinkade's, The Many Loves of Marriage Two for the Road Picture two backpackers, a man and a woman, setting out on a journey. As well as they are able, they have prepared themselves for the long trek. They're excited. They're also inexperienced, untested, unproven, and just a little bit scared. Yet they have the essentials. They have a good compass. They have provisions. And they have each other. They have a vague notion that there will be a long climbs, ... read more

22 September 2008 We leave Johannesburg, South Africa, for Sao Paulo, Brazil (GMT -3). Flight time 10h40. Arrive late afternoon in Sao Paulo and is shuttled to Hotel Marriott where we have our first Caparenia. We're very jet-lagged and a little drunk after our 2nd Caparenia. Have a so-so dinner with red wine. Hit the hay... 23 September 2008 Up early to catch our flight to Lima, Peru (GMT -5). Flight time 05h40. We're now 7 hours behind South Africa, at sea level. Wait around the airport for our flight to Cusco. Have a light lunch and our first Peruvian beer, Cusquena. Learn some basic Spanish from our phrase book. Have trouble getting our boarding passes from the 'ATM like' machine because we have to enter the 1st 3 letters of our country and the machine ... read more
