South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires January 4th 2008

Hi Everybody! We had an interesting thing happened to us on our way to the airport yesterday. When the taxi stopped at redlights, sellers would come up to the window with newspapers, ice cream, maps, etc. I didn´t pay much attention until a man came up holding 6 rats by their tails. I was in such a state of shock that I didn´t even try to get out my camera. Walt started asking the driver if the animals were hamsters. The driver agreed with me that they were ratas. We love Buenos Aires! It reminds us of New York City because it is bustling with activity. This morning there was a big parade of state employees that were protesting something about their benefits. They marched down the street with banners, musical instruments, and fireworks. Our hotel ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima January 3rd 2008

Hi Everybody! We arrived in Lima around midnight and were picked up by the hostel. We stayed in an old hacienda in the Mira Flores district. We met lots of interesting people at the hostel and about half of them were in our age group. One man had ridden his motorcycle all the way down from Canada. He had lots of interesting stories to tell. I had breakfast with a young lady from Australia who was taking a year to go around the world. Four other older teenagers were from Ecuador and on their way to Machu Picchu. Walt and I came to Peru in 1998 and enjoyed our visit to MP. On this trip, we are in Lima only because we got a great airline price to this destination. Lima does charge you a $30 ... read more

Europe » Italy » Friuli-Venezia Giulia » Aviano August 27th 2007

Hi Everybody! After leaving Bled, we visited the Triglav National Park in N.W. Slovenia. The drive into the mountains had 50 hairpin curves that overlooked a beautiful gorge. The road was built during WWI by 10,000 Russian POW's. We decided to stay in a sobe in the small village of Ciginj that night. The couple who owned it, also operated a paragliding adventure business. Speaking of sobes, all of the owners have been so nice and gracious. One elderly widow in Croatia, brought us a bowl of freshly picked figs and big purple grapes. She didn't speak a word of English, but we still managed to communicate. We turned our rental car in at Rijeka, Croatia. There was going to be an extra charge of a few hundred dollars if we took it to Italy. The ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Bled August 24th 2007

Hi Everybody! Slovenia is a charming country and reminds me of Germany. Everything is lush and green with pretty flowers everywhere. The houses all have window boxes that are overflowing with bright colored flowers. Tito, the Communist leader of Yugoslavia, had a summer villa here and often entertained heads of state in Bled. Bled is a small alpine town that sits by peaceful Lake Bled. It has a 1000 year old castle hanging from the side of a cliff. The Julian Alps - named after Julius Casesar are a backdrop for the town. In the middle of Lake Bled is a fairytale island with a small church. During the Communist reign, the church was closed and wedding were outlawed in the church. Today, it is a popular site for weddings. The Slovenians have a tradition that ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik August 22nd 2007

Hi Everybody! Croatia is a beautiful country that sits on the side of a mountain by the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. The coast is rocky with an occasional narrow beach. Most of the beach is covered with small rocks. The scenery is spectacular and reminded me of Italy. As a little background, I would like to remind you that Croatia was attacked early in the morning in October 1991 by the Yugoslav Army- mostly Serbs. Croatia had declared its independence from Yugolavia a few months before this happened. The citizens took shelter in the city's ancient walled fort and in their cellars. The fighting went on for 8 months. 70% of the homes lost their roofs to the bombing. Today, most of the land mines have been cleared. This summer, scientists started training bees ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » South » Mostar August 21st 2007

Hi Everybody! We drove over a twisting, mountain road to get to Bosnia Herzegovina. Not long after we crossed the border, we started seeing bombed out houses. We rode by the Neretva River passing many fields of grapes. Our destination was Mostar, a city situated at the base of a mountain range. This city has a thriving Muslim community and a large Catholic community. Over half of the buildings had bullet and shrapnel holes. Some buildings were just a shell, others had collapsed roofs, and others had the doors and windows shot out. A large Catholic church downtown had hundreds of bullet-shrapnel holes. We went to the Old Town and saw the stone bridge which has recently been rebuilt after being destroyed in the last war. It really touched our hearts to see this city with ... read more

Europe » Montenegro August 20th 2007

Hi Everybody! We took our first plane flight from Belgrade to Tivar, Montenegro. Three times, we were at our gate ready to leave when the police came in and cleared the waiting room. We never understood what the problem was. Montenegro's scenery was different from any that we have previously seen in this part of the country. It has majestic mountains that come straight down to the Adriatic Sea. Judging from the nice yatchs, it must be a favorite haunt for the weathly. We drove to Budva, a seaside town for lunch and found it very crowded. The food had a Greek accent. Nude bathing is a big deal in this area. The only nude people that we saw on the beach were children. Everybody that we saw had a fantastic tan! We took a ferry ... read more

Europe » Romania August 19th 2007

Hi Everybody! Walt and I have just returned to Belgrade from Romania. We had a fascinating adventure! Just getting there was very difficult! We took a bus from Belgrade to the bus station near the border. At that point, we had to get a taxi and were able to do that by Walt speaking German to the bus driver. He understood enough to tell the taxi driver where to take us. The bus and the taxi were not allowed into Romania. The driver took us as far as to the Serbian checkpoint. We walked from there to the Romanian border - which was about a fourth of a mile. Next, we walked a half mile to a gas station. The owner was very nice but did not speak any English. He understood enough German to help ... read more

Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade August 17th 2007

Hi Everybody! Yesterday, we took a train ride from Sofia, Bulgaria to Belgrade, Serbia. We covered 200 miles in 11 hours on a train that had no air-conditioning. We bought the best available first class tickets which meant that we had white satin covers on our headrests. We did have assigned seats but no one seemed to pay attention to that. The train ride was long and hot! The good part was that we made a couple of excellent friends. One was a University student returning home to Belgrade from a 45 day trip to the Middle East. His name was Miklos, and he was extremely helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed his company. We met Miklos before we boarded the train. Our cabin mates were Serbians and consisted of Lily, the mother her daughter, Natasha age 12 ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia City » Sofia August 15th 2007

Hi Everybody! I am having to play catch up with the blog, because we have not had internet access for several days. I know the travelblog alerts are probably irritating to some of you. Just delete the reminders or hit unsubscribe if it fills up your mailbox. To get to Sofia, we had to ride the bus back to Skopje, Macedonia. We caught another bus there for Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The road to Sofia was extremely bumpy. All of our muscles ached by the time we arrived. Most of the population in Sofia is made up of Orthodox members. There are lots of Orthodox churches, but we have only seen one Mosque here. In the city center, there are several old, beautiful, massive sized buildings. They have huge windows, tall doors, and ornate gates. Sofia ... read more
