Hi Everybody! We just arrived in Singapore late this afternoon! We are staying at the Orchard Hotel in the middle of a shopper's paradise. I am looking forward to checking it out tomorrow. I have heard that everything here is terribly expensive. The city is very modern and almost everyone speaks fluent English. The airport was very modern with a theater, gym, and well organized ground transportation. I have a feeling that this city will be more like Atlanta than the other Asian cities that we have visited. I haven't seen any Americans yet but have seen many Swedes and Australians. In our hotel room, there is a huge round window (3 ft in diameter) that is located between the bedroom and bathroom. Lucky for me, it has a shade that you can pull over it ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City October 27th 2006

Hi Everybody! One thing that gets your attention in Vietnam is the traffic. There are probably 10 scooters for every car, bus, and bicycle. They all constantly blow their horns instead of hitting the brakes. At first, I was a little scared to cross the streets. Occasionally, a native girl would grab my arm and pull me across with her. We would walk in between the scooters. I got to where I could do it on my own. The city also has a force of tourist officers that are very helpful. This is the first city that Walt has allowed me to go out and shop in on my own. I got turned around a few times when I left a market by a different entrance. The tourist guys showed me the way back to my ... read more

Hi Everybody! We are so happy to be in Vietnam. We arrived early last evening and saw rain for the first time since our trip started. It didn't last long but made everything steamy. It is in the 90's during the day and feels just like Alabama in the summer. The people here are wonderful. They are so friendly and helpful and always have a smile on their faces. One thing that I like about being here is that they love the U.S. dollar. They had rather have that than their Vietnamese dong. It sure makes life easier for me with the exchange rate 16,000 dong to 1 U.S. dollar. Speaking of money, everything is very inexpensive! I went to the market today and probably overpaid for merchandise that I thought was really cheap. On ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu October 24th 2006

Hi Everybody! Both India and Kathmandu are having festivals this week. This is India's largest festival, Diwali, the festival of life. They clean their homes well, give gifts to each other, shoot fireworks, close shops, hang garlands of marigolds, and party. I don't remember the name of Nepal's festival. They celebrate 366 festivals a year. We went to Nepal because Walt has always wanted to go. It is a very small country north of India that is famous for trekking. American tourism has dropped 90% in the last few years. The most exciting thing that we did in Nepal was take an early morning flight to view the Himalayas and Mount Everest. We will never forget that experience! The view of the mountains was breathtaking! Eight of the 14 highest mountains in the world are in ... read more

Hi Everybody! We got here in the very early morning hours. Luckily, we were able to sleep some on the plane. Leaving the plane, we had to go down an escalator. Many people were carrying rolling bags and duffle bags. The Indians did not move away from the escalator. People started backing up, bumping each other, falling over, etc. I was very uncomfortable! We helped a young Muslim girl from Canada who had a small child in a stroller. I watched the child so she could complete her immigration papers. We had sent our passports to the Embassy of India in D.C. last summer so things went smoothly for us. The natives in the airport and on the plane never smile or greet you. We saw men lying on the sidewalk asleep around the airport. You ... read more

Hi Everybody! I made a mistake when I explained about Bali's currency. $1000 Bali rupies =10US cents, $10,000 R= $1 US, $100,000 R= $10. That was very confusing. I was glad when some shops accepted US dollars. The people in Bali are very poor. 80 million people in Indonesia live on $1 a day. Some of the workers told us that they mostly live on rice. Rarely can they afford to have any meat. They said that their most skilled workers make around $100 US per month. A man on the plane told me that he had a couple of stone statues commissioned while on the island. He said that they would cost him around $90 each. He also told me that he only paid $26 for his hotel room and stayed for 3 weeks. He ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali October 20th 2006

Hi Everybody! Today, I am going to mention a few things that I had forgotten on previous blogs. We have seen many men and women in various countries exercising in the early morning hours in parks and on schoolgrounds. The men seem to be doing martial arts and exercises using wooden swords. The women do a slow type of dance or aerobics. Bali is covered with beautiful flowers. Everywhere you look, you see them. It is very tropical. There are many European and Australian tourists. We haven't met any Americans here yet. The money is hard to figure out for me. A dollar is worth $1000. You might see a purse for sale in a store for $108,000. The street vendors like US $1 bills. I have used them to get good deals. It has not ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali October 19th 2006

Hi Everybody! When we first arrived in Bali, it looked like a cross between the Bahamas of the 60's and Mexico today. I wasn't sure that I was going to like it. All of our airports have been very modern. Bali's is old and not as efficient. Life goes at a slower pace here. We are staying on the beach in the southern part of the island in an area known as Kuta. We have decided to just take this time for R & R. We don't want to go on any tours to see elephants, monkeys, or volcanoes. We may want to someday come back to this island. Our hotel sits on the beach and is very attractive. The pool is a huge cloverleaf shape with a swim-in bar. You can sit on the beach ... read more
