Hi Everybody! The travel agency came through with our visa and we spent Sunday in Shenzhen. It was not a remarkable trip but we enjoyed the time that we spent with Lyn and Pat, 2 business people with Russell Stover Candy. They were going over to visit a factory that prints paper products for their company. We took a train from Hong Kong to LuWu where we crossed the border. We were limited to visiting Shenzhen since we only had a one day visa. Twenty years ago, Shenzhen was just a fishing village located by the Pearl River and across from Hong Kong. Now, it is one of China's top three high technology development centers. We found that there were not a lot of things for us to visit. It doesn't have the history of many ... read more

Asia » Macau November 11th 2006

Hi Everybody! We got back to Hong Kong on Friday afternoon and went directly to the travel agency. We wanted to check on the status of our China tour. We found out that we could go over on Sunday, the 12th. We decided to wander around Hong Kong for a few hours. We went to Kowloon Park and found it a wonderful respite from the crowds and traffic. It has a nice Chinese garden, fountains, aviary, sport areas, etc. Next, we walked to St. John's Cathedral, the Far East's oldest Anglican church. The doors on the church were very tall and were similar to the doors on our house (which also came from a church.) On the spur of the moment, we decided to take a ferry to an outlying island, Macau. It was a great ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon November 9th 2006

Hi Everybody! I thought that Iwas going to have to drag Walt to Myanmar (Burma.) He talked to some Australians last week who told him it was off limits for them to go there. He decided to call the American Embassy in Bangkok to check on the status for U.S. Citizens. They told him it was fine to go. One reason that he was worried was that CNN did a special on one of the leader's daughter's weddings. A guest wore a hidden camera and took pictures of the incredible wealth of the family. The bride had on more and larger diamonds than any movie star, the Queen of England, or Princess Diana. One necklace had probably several hundred diamonds of many carats. Walt was afraid that the leader might retaliate against U.S. citizens out of ... read more

Hi Everybody! WOW!!! Angkor Wat is awesome! I can understand why it is one of the 7 man made wonders of the world. We got up at 4:30 so we could view it at sunrise. Angkor means capital city or holy city. In Camodia, it refers to the capital city of the Khmer Empire thta existed between the 9th and 12 centureies. There are dozens of temple ruins that are remnants of the Angkorian capital when it was at the heighth of its power. At one time, over a million people lived in the area of these temples. The Khmer kings at that time ruled over what is now Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. The French discovered the ruins in the 1890's. Due to wars, political unrest, etc. the temple ruins were not cleared of jungle ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane November 6th 2006

Hi Everybody! We got up very early today for a 6:10 flight. When we got to the airport, we found out that the airlines made the ticket for the wrong day. We were suppose to fly tomorrow. We have been trying to resolve the problem for 4 hours. Finally, they decided to put up on a 12:00 flight to Bangkok and a late afternoon flight to Siem Reap. That will cut our time short in Cambodia, but we will just have to deal with it. I don't know if I have mentioned or not that we have to pay airline taxes when we leave some of the airports. When you enter a country, you have to pay for a Visa on Arrival if you haven't previously purchased one. We took care of a couple of countries' ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane November 5th 2006

Hi Everybody! We flew to Vientiane yesterday on a propeller type airplane that held about 60 passengers. While we were waiting for our flight, we met a nice couple from Germany that were natives of Prague. He had a PhD in zoology with a specialty in fresh water dolphins. He was coming to Laos for a conference. We are staying in a nice hotel for $20 a night and that includes breakfast. It has white marble floors, a huge bath, and nice furniture. They provide free transportation to and from the airport. We didn't realize that when we hired a taxi. We also hired the driver to drive us around this morning. He told us that it takes him $300 a month to pay all of his living expenses. He has to pay $10 tuition for ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi November 4th 2006

Hi Everybody! We spent yesterday in the River Kwai region. we stopped first in Kanchanaburi, a town about 2 hours west of Bangkok. It was here that we viewed the Death Railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai. Both were built by the Japanese during WWII. They used Allied prisoners of war to do the labor. 25,000 workers died from exhaustion, malnutrition, and maleria while slaving away for the brutal Japanese. While the movie, "Bridge Over the River Kwai" is not completely historically accurate, it reflects the horror and suffering that the POW's and slave laborers endured. We also stopped at the JEATH (Japanese, English, American, Thai, Hollanders) War Museum and one of the POW Cemetaries. It was a sobering experience. We took an hour long train ride through the countryside. We saw fields of ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok November 2nd 2006

Hi Everybody! If you decide to visit Asia, I would highly recommend Bangkok. It has great food, interesting sights, nice people, and plenty of people who speak English. This morning, we took a city tour to the flower market, Chinatown, a gem factory/workshop, and visited many temples/wats. Each temple in Bangkok is unique with its own architecture and spiritual importance. We visited the temple with the Reclining Buddha and another with the Golden Buddha, a 10 foot tall statue that weighs 5 tons. I thought it was interesting that in 1957 this statue was completely covered in plaster and was being moved to a new location by a crane when it was dropped. It had previously been covered to protect it from invaders like the Burmese. Throughout Bangkok, we noticed that many people were wearing yellow ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Western Province » Colombo October 31st 2006

Hi Everybody! If I ever take a trip like this again, I am not going to arrive or depart an airport after dark. It is frightening to go into an unknown place and especially at night. On our flight, there was one Caucasian lady. We approached her when the plane landed and asked her a couple of questions. She worked for the Asia Foundation, a human rights organization. We were thankful for her help and advice. We were able to locate a kiosk run by our hotel, the Colombo Hilton. They got us a taxi and we felt safe leaving in it. We had to ride approximately 40 minutes to the hotel. We were stopped numerous times by the military police. The driver would turn on the inside light, the police would shine a light on ... read more

Asia » Singapore October 30th 2006

Hi Everybody! Singapore is very hot and humid! Heat doesn't normally bother me unless it is hot and dry like Bahrain, but this is like good old Alabama heat in July after a rainfall. This city is probably more modern than the U.S. It is spotless and people are fined big bucks if they litter. The streets are wide and are lined with old majestic trees. The sidewalks are easily 3-4 times wider than in the U.S. Everything here is terribly expensive. We went to the Raffles Hotel where the Singapore Sling drink was invented. We ordered 2 and paid a total of $30 U.S. for them. Many of the people speak fluent English. There are some who speak Singlish, talk very fast, and are hard to understand. The women are all fashionably dressed. The guys ... read more
