Hi Everybody! When you are in this part of the world, you have to do what the natives do. We have lots of places that we want to visit. The problem is that it is difficult to travel between them. We have been to many travel agencies trying to get airline tickets. They either tell us that they are not available, they don't book plane tickets, or some other reason. The rental car is out for various reasons. That leaves the unairconditioned train which is often very slow or the sometimes crowded bus. The bus has to stop at the border for one or more hours, loses air conditioning going up steep hills, but is often the best choice. The bus was our only option for getting to Pristina. One of our companions on the bus ... read more

Hi Everybody! I am using a strange keyboard that has y and z switched. Try to overlook that if I have spelling errors with those letters. I also cant use an apostrophe or quotation marks. Walt and I walked over the Old Stone Bridge and explored the Ottoman section of Skopje. A young couple was exiting the Orthodox Church after getting married. Two musicians serenaded them as they left the church. The Kale Fortress overlooks this section of town. Only3 of its original 70 towers remain. This city is 2000 years old and has suffered many floods and earthquakes. When buildings have been rebuilt, modern architectural designs have been chosen that really dont fit in with the old European style buildings. The train station is one of the worst designs. It is a big, gray, ugly ... read more

Hi Everybody! We spent Saturday afternooon exploring Thessaloniki. We went to the Roman Forum, Paradisos Bath ruins, the Arch of Galerius, the White Tower, several Orthodox churches. We went through a park and I saw a woman jumping rope, my favorite exercise. I tried to communicate with her and found out that she was from Afghanistan. Today has been great! We caught an early train from Thessaloniki to the capital of Macedonia, Skopje. We had a cabin with 6 seats that we shared with a super, nice guy - Chad. He is working for a contractor in Kosovo. Our trip flew by as he filled our brains with lots of interesting facts about this region of the country. Near the end of our trip, another American joined us. He was visiting a former Yale classmate from ... read more

Hi Everybody! We boarded our bus to Thessaloniki Friday morning at 5:30 A.M. It took us eleven long hours to reach our destination from Tirana, Albania. The bus was a modern tour bus. All the other passengers were natives of the two countries. We were able to talk at length with a young man who had recently graduated from the University in Albania. Other natives who could not speak English, still tried to help us by showing us what to do at the border with passports, luggage checks, etc. We drove through a beautiful, green valley with lots of orchards (apple, pears, peaches, figs, olives) and corn fields. We saw one tractor and many people working with hand tools. Corn shocks were tied together in fields along with hundreds of big haystacks. We frequently saw men ... read more

Hi Everybody! We enjoyed our stay in Durres. Part of the blog that I wrote there did not print. While we were there, we saw a mosque and a Greek Orthodox Church. I don't know how much of the population is Muslim. We have seen a few women with modest scarves - no black burkas. Many of the older women are dressed completely in black with an occasional white head scarf. They must be Greek Orthodox. Late in the afternoon, they close the main street in Durres to automobile traffic. Families stroll up and down the street together. This morning, we walked to the bus terminal and got on a bus for Tirana. When it was about three fourths full, it left (30 min. early.) Another bus pulled into its place for the same destination. The ... read more

Hi Everybody! It feels great that we have finally reached one of our targeted destinations. We didn't realize how difficult it was going to be to get around in E. Europe. If we could have entered from farther north, we might have been able to rent a car. There are no rental cars here, no trains between here and Montenegro or Croatia, & no ferry to Croatia (not sure about Montenegro). We are going to investigate buses next. We broke one of our travel rules last night when we arrived here at midnight. It was complete chaos trying to get our luggage. Cars were parked so close that they touched the suitcases. We left the ferry and got in line to have our passports checked. The power went off while we were in line. I have ... read more

Europe » Spain August 2nd 2007

Hi Everybody! Our first stop in Europe was a 2 night stay in Rota, Spain, a small town on the coast near Cadiz. We have been here on 3 previous occasions and didn't really plan this stop. I had a badly infected eye by the time we arrived. I went to ER and got an antibiotic salve which helped enormously. After two nights, we were able to hop to Sicily, Italy. We had visited Sicily on some earlier trips so again, we just tried to get a hop out. After two nights, we gave up and rented a car. We drove to the east coast and went north to Messina where we were able to catch a ferry to the mainland. The rental car was 60 E ($85 US) and gas was $7 US a gallon. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Central Anatolia » Ankara March 10th 2007

Hi Everybody! I apologize for an error in my last blog. We visited the home of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John the Apostle. We have not had internet access for days. We have stayed on several occasions in hotels that were on the outskirts of towns. We also have been very busy! We have seen many ruins both Greek and Roman. A few have been reconstructed using the ancient materials. They were impressive = especially at Ephesus. I have to admit that they are not my thing! I enjoy seeing the geological formations and just the land more. I loved going to the Cappadocia region. The landscape is very unusual there. Thirty million years ago, volcanoes covered this region with ash. The ash solidified into a substance called tuff, a material that ... read more

Middle East » Turkey March 4th 2007

Hi Everybody! Walt and I have been pleasantly surprised with our experiences so far in Turkey. We feel the country is a step above most of the sites we visited last fall in Asia. We have felt very safe even in the evenings on the streets, and we have found the country to be clean. Turkey reminds us of Eastern Europe. Istanbul is the only city in the world that sprawls across two continents. To the East of the Bosporus Strait lies the city's Asian side. We stayed on the Western, or European side. We only stayed there for one night but will be going back for a couple of nights at the end of our trip. From our hotel, we walked to the Sultanahmet Square and viewed the Blue Mosque and Haghia Sophia. We will ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong November 14th 2006

Hi Everybody! We are at the Hong Kong Airport ready to end our adventure to the Asia. I haven't felt well for several days. The exhaust fumes and constant cigarette smoke has finally gotten to me. I was really dragging when we went to China and you could probably tell it from reading the blog. I thought in this blog, I would mention some things that we have learned. 1. Always carry lots of brand new dollar bills. Don't take any torn, worn, or bills with ink writing on them. 2. Know the visa requirements, entrance fees, and exit fees for every country. 3. Have plenty of pages in your passport. 4. Get shots up-dated, carry antibiotics, cold medicine, medicine for other remedies. 5. Establish a travel face and do not trust strangers who approach you. ... read more
