We said sad goodbyes to Walter and Cindy, and beautiful San Diego on Monday morning, and drove east to Anza Borrego State Park. After a beautiful drive through the hills, over the mountains and into the high desert valley, we arrived at the trailhead for the hike into the Borrego Palm Canyon. The hike is wonderful, following a small stream through boulders and flowers into a canyon that ends in a real palm oasis! The palms are the only ones that are native to California. We passed by the Salton Sea, after leaving Anza Borego. There had once been much development around the accidentally (an attempt to steal water from Mexico gone bad) man-made lake, with lots of water sports and fishing available. Not any more....many abandoned properties..roads with names and pavement leading nowhere. People still ... read more

(The next few entries are from the California trip...I had to order a new card reader to go with the new memory card I bought....thus the delay with posting!) Friday night, we had a great dual birthday dinner for Walter and Cindy in Little Italy. On Saturday, after going to the street market in Little Italy, we all headed up the coast for some real California time..it was sunny (still cold though..) and people were surfing...and roller skating...and just being cool... Walter drove us from north of Solana Beach to within sight of Tijuana. We started the day off with a drive to Deer Park Monastery, where I had attended a retreat with Thich Nhat Hahn a few years ago. I wanted to show Bill the beautiful setting and participate a "Day of Mindfulness" if possible. ... read more

We arrived here Monday evening after a long day of driving. There had been snow on the pass the night before and I5 was closed, so we were a bit concerned about getting across...There was some snow piled along the freeway, but nothing on the road by late afternoon when we got there. We did see a possible funnel cloud forming outside of Sacramento, and hit some very heavy downpours, but in general the drive to Glendale was easy, and we arrived in time to hear Shirley play piano for the residents before dinner. We had a great visit with Shirley over dinner, and then left for San Diego. We arrived here around 9:00pm and were really amazed with the beauty of Walter and Cindy's home and neighborhood. The next morning we saw the location in ... read more

Horrid Weather, Wonderful Friends We are into the fifth day of our California road trip...and the weather is getting steadily worse! It is actually colder here than in LaConner. (42 when we were out earlier!) We drove down through Washington and Oregon in sun/rain for two days and hit snow in the mountains in Oregon/California, but it did not stick to the ground, thankfully! We got in front of the storm in California, and had sun til mid morning on Friday, when the downpours started. Last night we had wind gusts here around 50 mph...! The good part has been seeing family and friends along the way. We stopped to see Jason and Gabriel in Edmonds and Luke at work on the way through Seattle. We got to my cousin Pam's home by dinner on Thursday. ... read more

We left Isla Holbox at dawn yesterday...it was a warm, humid morning...lots of bird song, and mosquitos! We will miss the soft sand, great food, friendly people, warm waves, cold beer, palms, and warm breezes, but not the cigarette smoke (tourists) and watching people roast themselves in the sun.. We took a golf cart taxi to the ferry, which was packed with high school kids heading for the mainland school. Next we took the bus to Cancun, a three hour trip through jungle and villages. The ferry cost 70 pesos for 30 minutes; the bus was 90 pesos for three hours... Once in Cancun, we took another bus to the airport, lunched, bought vanilla, and had an uneventful flight to Dallas. We flew over Holbox, which was very cool...being able to see all of this long, ... read more

Saturday I've been able to swim at least once a day now....swimming in warm salt water is one the best things ever....No one else seems to swim..they wade or paddle a bit in the edge. The water gradually deepens...it isn't over my head until I am 50 feet out.... Besides general relaxing, we've been playing cards, and trying new restaurants...and today we took a boat trip. It was the classic "see some birds, look for dolphins, see some more birds, go to a well worn local attraction". There was a bit of a surprise at the local attraction, at least....see the photos! We shared the boat with a couple from Chicago and a very well-traveled family from Denmark. Monday Not much else to report...just more beautiful beach views, swimming, eating... Right now, we're sitting in the ... read more

We are loving the easy life here....I get up around 7:30, meditate on the beach, go for a short run before it gets too hot, have coffee and some kind of sweet from the bakery, swim, shower, eat breakfast...and then all that's left is reading and stroling. We've taken some long walks up to the channel that separates this part of the penninsula from the rest and makes it an island. The last buildings on the beach are only a mile or so from our hotel. We may rent bikes today and explore more. Hard to believe it may snow back home today.... Many French and Italians here..not as many Americans...Lots of choices for good food, ranging from Italian pizza (owned by an Italian) to sushi (haven't been there), and plenty of fresh fish. While there ... read more

We took the 11:30 pm bus out of Merida, from one of the second class bus stations. No other gringos in sight....We picked up a couple from Chicago later in the night. The bus was quite new and had good seats, and best of all, since it was second class, no blaring violent movies! We took the "free" (non-toll) road through all the towns and villages, and over hundreds of topes. We arrived in a very windy Chiquila around 5:30 am, having gotten a bit of sleep on the bus. We were taken to the ferry by a bicycle cab, and then had to wait in the wind (thankfully the rain had stopped) for the 6:00 am ferry to Isla Holbox (Hol-boash). Once on the island, it became quickly clear that they had experiened really heavy ... read more

Our last night here turned out to be a few hours in the outer circles of hell. Around 10:30 pm the disco started up, and continued churning out music til 4:00 am. A low point for me was a very loud "Smoke on the Water" around 3:00 am. As soon as the music stopped, the locsl cats decided to reproduce on the roof of our patio, which is translucent, giving a glimpse of cat porn before they ran off screeching still. Once the cats were gone, a persistent mosquito buzzed us until we fell asleep for a few hours, only to be woken by the enormous (and I am not exaggerating here) South African couple who sit by the pool and smoke.... The overnight bus is now sounding pleasant in contrast. We visited both the Archaeological ... read more

These are examples of the variety of homes you see in small towns and villages here. We will be traveling on an overnight bus (Saturday-Sunday) to Isla Holbox. We may or may not have internet access there...we'll be there for about 10 days....then back to Cancun and home on the 23rd.... read more
