We left Helena early, around 8:00 am, with the temperature around 27 and mostly clear skies. John and Linda's remodel is moving along, and we can't wait to see how it looks when it's done....(so, we'll be back...???!!). The first pass out of Helena was still a bit slippery...the temperature got down to 14 degrees F and there was ice on the road. The rest of the trip was perfect though: mostly sunny and the roads were dry and uncrowded. Leaving the Rockies behind, we crossed more rangeland (mostly Black Angus cattle, with many small calves) and rivers...over two more passes, and through Idaho. We had a late breakfast outside of Coeur D'Alene, and headed west through Washington's palouse: vast wheat fields on rolling hills. After the Columbia Gorge, there are more small farms and towns. ... read more

Day 21 Salt Lake City, Utah to Helena, Montana The weather was not promising for our all day drive to Helena...snow and rain predicted. We woke up to a fresh four inches of snow, but the roads were clear, and while we hit several snow flurries as we drove north, there was never any snow on the roads. Most of the drive was through flat pastures and sage brush, with snowy mountains in the background. We stopped off in Butte to look at the old buildings, the mines (copper) and to get a coffee. We sat in a sports bar that was once a bank, and the old vault was still there. We arrived at John and Linda's before dark....They are in the middle of remodeling and are doing beautiful things to their home, which is ... read more

Every day we think we've seen the most incredible rock formations and that there can't be anything more spectacular....and then there is! Day 16 Page, Arizona to Zion National Park, Utah We started the day out with a trip to Antelope Canyon...Bill had struck up a conversation with a German tourist at an overlook outside of the Grand Canyon, and she had mentioned that she was heading for Page to see this canyon. On the way into Page, we saw a sign for the canyon but knew nothing about it. We were given a tourist booklet in the hotel, and saw the tours offered by the Navajo to this beautiful sight and decided to book one for the morning...the canyon is a slot in the beautifully colored rocks....you walk through with a guide...it takes about an ... read more

Day Thirteen Phoenix to Flagstaff We reluctantly left the warmth of Phoenix where we could pick up lemons and oranges on our walks, and headed north, through Sun City, and on to Prescott and the mining town of Jerome. Then into Sedona, and finally to Flagstaff for the night. Some of the day's highlights: A pair of older well dressed men with maps and computer printouts, rolling a measuring wheel along the road. Looking for a mine? Fake snake on the sidewalk in Wickenburg which startled me for about 5 seconds...more startling was a call later that night from Seattle friend Karl who was in Wickenburg, unbeknownst to us! The town of Prescott, which was much more interesting than we expected....lots of beautiful Victorian homes, and the "Smoki Museum", which holds Native American artifacts and some ... read more

Day Ten through Day Twelve Phoenix We took Friday "off", staying at Mary's wonderful home and doing laundry, washing the car, baking, and shopping and making dinner. We walked the mile or so to Trader Joe's in the warm sun and saw almost no one on foot anywhere... On Saturday, we did the tour of Mary's real estate, past, present and future, visiting her office, downtown Phoenix, and the suburb of Avondale. Because of all the rain this winter, (which has made all of Arizona very green) the Salt River is running very high and we had a few detours to avoid flooded roads. On the way home, we had drinks at the Wigwam, an old resort once far out in the desert and now surrounded by houses. Sunday we got up early and went for ... read more

Day Seven Palm Springs We slept in a bit...the previous occupant had cleverly and maliciously set the alarm for 3:30 AM....so we needed a bit of extra sleep. We had a good breakfast (inlcuded in our incredible price of $57/night in this hotel where the list price is $133...thank you, Hotwire!) and headed out to check out the local thrift stores on the way to the Palm Spring Tramway....one of the wonders of the world...(kind of). After buying a sweater (Lynn) and nothing else (Bill), we drove to the foot of the mountains where the road to the tram climbs up a few thousand feet. The tram goes from 2400 feet to 8400 feet in less than fifteen minutes! (Thus the title of this blog.) I had taken it several years ago when I was in ... read more

Day Four Sacramento We spent the day with Perry, our friend and former renter in LaConner. He showed us around the city, and took us on a hike along the river. We were surprised at how many old, beautiful neighborhoods there are in Sacramento. We went out to dinner with Perry and his girlfriend Lizet, who we were meeting for the first time. We really enjoyed getting to know her, and think Perry is one lucky guy! (Of course, we also think Liz has found a great guy!) We were sad to leave and hope they come visit us soon.... Day Five Sacramento to Glendale Today was a long day of driving for Bill and of sitting for Lynn: we traveled the 400 miles with only a few short stops, since we wanted to get to ... read more

(I have decided to write a blog for this trip after all...I thought the photos would be interesting for those of you who haven't been to the American West...As always, just ignore the messages about this trip if you're not interested....) We are driving from our home to California, Arizona, Utah, Montana, and home again. Day One LaConner, Washington to Lincoln City, Oregon We left home on a cool, cloudy morning, with daffodils blooming everywhere and the famous tulips beginning to show color (LaConner has a Tulip Festival in April every year.) We had a quick stop to see my son Luke at work on the way down interstate 5 to Olympia, where we turned off for the coast. On the way, we passed through cities, towns, forests, clear cuts, and farms, arriving at the ... read more

We had our last three quiet, beautiful days of sun and waves in Pie de la Cuesta... It is surprising that Pie de la Cuesta is not more touristy. It started out as a fishing village, which then became a place to eat a fresh fish dinner in palapas on the beach. Inexpensive hotels were added, but the main attraction is still the fish dinners. Since you can't swim or surf, those crowds don't come. People come from Acapulco, and Mexico City (and smaller cities), for the weekend or holidays. Canadians come for longer. There are no tourist shops in town, except for one selling beach toys and bathing suits. It is really wonderful! If you go, stay at Villa Nirvana, and ask for Room 16, unless of course, we are there! We are now back ... read more

Saturday: It seems that Acapulco is a magnet of sorts for mistakes in our Mexico travels. Some of you may remember that we ended up in Aca last time after having made the mistake of skipping it on our way between Zihuateneo and Taxco. (We decided that Taxco was too noisy and turned around the next day and came back to Aca.) Well, this time we have now decided that we should have stayed in Pie de la Cuesta and made a a day trip or two into Aca. So, here we are, at the Acamar for just one night, and planning to return to Pie tomorrow! We just couldn’t find the charm we’d seen the first time here….especially compared to the Villa Nirvana and Pie itself. It didn’t help that we arrived on Saturday afternoon, ... read more
