Today was to be our long bike ride into the mountains that ring the Kanda Plain and Tokyo. The day began with some clouds, but a promise of sun. It was in the 70's.... We started out around 10:00 am and rode about 45 minutes through the city of Fussa (part of Tokyo) and into the hills. We stopped at a 7-11 for snacks and some lunch items to bring with us up the mountain. As we left the more urban streets and started to gain elevation, congestion turned to sawmills, small farms and forests. The road was was a 12% grade for the first steep part of the ride, and I ended up walking near the end of this section, and also walked the 15% grade that followed. It then flattened out a bit and ... read more

We rented our bikes from Matt's shop today, and headed off on our own to the Tama River Trail. The biggest problem is remembering that one drives/rides on the left here! The intersections are the hardest for me...I look each way about five times, it seems! The trail is fantastic: well paved, wide, flat....and it follows close to the river through parks and more wild areas. There are walkers, joggers, and cyclists of all ages. Along the edge of the trail are residential and manufacturing areas, along with a few small farms. We rode about 13 kilometers towards downtown and then back. It was so good to be able to cover longer distances and not have sore feet/knees, as I do when I walk now.... One the way back, we visited a Shinto temple with the ... read more

Today was a lazy day...Matt went to work and Bill and I walked to the 100 yen store to pick up some cheap sunglasses, since we had left ours in Matt's car and didn't realize that we had the keys to get them out....It was a partly sunny day here, humid and in the mid 70s.... After the 100 yen store, we headed for the Tama River, but got side-tracked by a Halloween celebration, where a long street was closed off, and kids in costumes were walking with their parents. After taking some photos, we started off again, hoping to visit a Buddhist temple near the river. We found it easily and after visiting, went down to river to sit for awhile. We wandered through the quiet neighborhoods near the river, and eventually found a Shinto ... read more

We woke up to rain on Saturday. We ate in the communal dining room at the lodge, with bicyclists from all over the world. We left around 9:00, and took the back roads most of the way back to Matt's place. The drive was spectacular, and there were almost no cars on most of the roads. The foliage was just past its prime, but the rain really brought out the colors. It cleared part way through the morning, and we had good weather until we descended back onto the Kanto Plain and into Tokyo. We went over three main mountain passes, down into valleys in between, where there were towns and small cities. At one point we were in the clouds on a tiny road climbing high into the mountains.....! I was hoping to see monkeys, ... read more

We left early yesterday, in Matt's hot little Subaru Impreza WRX, headed out for Matsumoto, where there is a castle we wanted to see. But our first destination was SNACKS! The food available at Japanese rest stops is not in the same class as what you find along the highways of the USA... We bought cheese rolls, raisin buns, canned coffee, and mochi cakes. The drive to the castle was pretty....green mountains, small towns and not too much traffic. After a walk around the castle moat and a visit to an unusual elementary school from the 1850s, we headed for a mountain lodge near Kamikochi (not far from Nagano, sight of the 1998 Winter Olympics), but with an important stop first: convenience store for more snacks! This time we bought: a fermented bean and rice cake, ... read more

We took the train to downtown Tokyo this morning, after Matt left for work and Justin for school. We got off in Shinjuku, a whirlwind of people and business, and decided to walk to Yoyogi Park and revisit the Meiji Shrine, where we had gone with my brother and his family in 2002. We only need to ask directions once, and got to the park after a 20 minute walk through a shopping plaza and along busy streets. A strange thing about Tokyo is the mix of highrises, small shops, houses, parks and apartment buildings everywhere in this immense metropolitan area. You are never in a purely residential or purely commercial area. Entering the park is like walking into the wardrobe on your way to Narnia: you transition from intense cityscape to deep woods, and at ... read more

We arrived here yesterday around 3:30pm, after a long flight (10.75 hours...) and some sleep, movies, drinks and meals. Matt met us at the airport and kindly drove us back through Tokyo rush hour traffic (3 hours of freeway driving...one way!) to his new apartment. We spent some time talking with Justin (Matt's 13 year old son) who had run a 10 mile race that afternoon and is now shockingly almost taller than me. We then attempted to unpack, wandered dazed around the apartment a bit, and collasped into bed around 9:00pm...only to awake around 4:00am this morning. After delicious homemade breakfast burritos (thank you, Matt), we walked to the airforce base, got our day passes, and went to the outdoor activities building where Matt works repairing bikes and managing the rental store. After trying one ... read more

We are heading off to Japan on Sunday...the second trip for me and the 6th for Bill. We will be staying with my brother Matt. Our last trip there was in 2002, before I started blogging, so I have only memories as reference. It was one the most fun trips we've taken. Japan takes silliness seriously, from clothes to fads to TV game shows. Everyone we met was so very helpful. One man actually walked us from one train to another (far out of his way) to make sure we got on the correct train line. Work and school hours are long, streets are packed at 11:30 pm, trains are crowded and no weekend culture is part of the tradition, but there is much energy everywhere. Can't wait to get back! We hope to visit Nikko ... read more

We entered Death Valley on Tuesday from the southeast in the early afternoon. I was expecting to find somewhat monotonous scenery once we were driving along the valley floor. Was I ever wrong! We spent the afternoon driving and stopping at sights along the way...I read aloud to Bill from the guide book, discovering how Death Valley was named (by Mormons) and being reminded about Twenty-Muleteam Borax... We took the scenic road called Artist's Palette, and were amazed by the colors. There were some flowers blooming, but not as many as in Anza Borrego. We watched the sunset (almost) from Zabriskie Point before starting the long drive out of the Valley, and to a hotel that would get us close enough to home to make it back in two more days. We were never below 4000 ... read more
