Yesterday we had a lazy day.... Carol stopped by while we still in PJs and we arranged to meet for dinner. Bill and I headed out later for the market. Bill bought a hat and went home while I wandered around the market for awhile. I love markets...looking at all the stuff people sell and buy for their daily needs...many, many shoe stands and stores here. I tried to replace my sandals but I wear one size larger than they carry in women's shoes.... We all met for dinner (Carol, Martin, us and two of their friends) and then attended a free classical guitar concert at the University (a block from our hotel). The guitarist was 17! Today we took the public bus to Celestun, where there is a large bird reserve/sanctuary. The two and half ... read more

Monday We had only planned a visit to Uxmal today, but ended up doing much more, mostly by choice. We got to Uxmal before the crowds (which really weren’t that big) and toured this magnificent site for few hours. We left around noon and decided we had time and energy to visit the Loltun cave further south of Santa Elena. Since we were passing the ruins at Kahbah, we decided to stop there en route. Kahbah is small, but has really beautiful details and a striking arch. ( I’ll add more info with the photos). The cave was amazing in its size…we only could visit a small part of it. It holds signs of human habitation since prehistory (9000 BC). Our guide had played in the cave as a child, before the State took it over. ... read more

Sunday We woke this morning to a multitude of bird songs…but it was hard to spot a single bird! I did see a small yellow and olive bird on the way to breakfast and glimpsed the magnificent green jay while eating. Yesterday, there was a large bird with a very long tail outside our room…it could turn its tail like the hands on a clock! I’m writing this outside our room and can see birds moving in the trees right now…The skies have cleared and it’s getting warmer. Last night the “Canadian weather” as they call it, lowered temperatures enough that I needed a blanket in the middle of the night! I am starting to feel better finally! Sunday PM Well, quite a day! On a suggestion of the owners of our hotel, we visited the ... read more

Saturday (We have been out of e-mail contact til today...so I will be adding blogs from earlier) We woke up to a cool, grey morning in Merida. After packing and breakfast, we walked a block to the rental car lot and loaded up our blue Nissan Sentra for the trip down the Puuc road to Santa Elena, a town of 4000. The drive was about 90 minutes and took us over the rolling hills into the Puuc region. We passed small farms and a few villages. This a Mayan area, and many people are more fluent in Mayan than Spanish. There are many ruins here, the most famous of which is Uxmal. We will visit there on Monday. Our hotel, the Flycatcher, is owned and run by a Mexican/American couple. They were very interesting to talk ... read more

We decided that we would get up early and travel down to Campeche, a walled, colonial city to the south, before driving back to Merida. There are two choices to get there: the "short" road and the "long road". While the long road looked interesting and not much longer, it was explained that there are hundreds of "topes" or speed bumps on the long road. We took the short road. However, as we found in Ticul earlier, road signs are not always there to help you...we ended up turning too soon and found ourselves passing the ruins of a great hacienda, followed by a small village. We got directions (I don't think that the older man I spoke to had ever conversed with a tall gringra before...), took a few photos, and found the right road. ... read more

Last night we attended one of the performances that the city of Merida sponsors every evening of the year. We think of Mexico as our poorer neighbor to the south, yet the culture offered here for free to the public is amazing! Last night's show was in the park next to our hotel, and performances have been given there for 46 years. There was an orchestra, a mariachi band, a chantuese with a powerful voice, and folk dancers. All were very professional and polished. The park was full, and the audience mostly locals. Today we visited the cathedral (in a concept resembling that of the Christians in Italy using Roman temples to build churches, it is built from stone taken from the Mayan temple it replaced), the modern art museum (free) and walked around the central ... read more

After being rebooked again in the middle of the night, we left Austin at 9:30am, changed planes in still frozen Dallas, and arrived in Cancun at 2:30pm. We quickly found a bus from the airport (where we met up again with the young couple from Bellingham who had been on our original flight from Seattle) to the bus station, and then caught a bus to Merida within ten munutes! The toll road to Merida passed through flat, low jungle for most of the four hours, with little or no signs of human habitation. Merida is a large city, with a beautiful colonial center, where we are staying. We had a great Yucatan style dinner last night, and now heading out for walk, after a late breakfast. Unfortunately, I've come down with a terrible cold.... Later... We ... read more

Day 18 Vieste We headed out in the car today, to explore a trail further north on the coast. We were given another creatively translated hiking guide by the owner of the hotel, and we chose a trail that passed a few Paleolithic caves, complete with rock carvings from 12,000 years ago. The guide not only mentioned the dreaded vipers again and included a viper antidote on the list of hiking supplies, but also added this reassuring statement: “Misadventures caused by vipers are not often, because of the small numbers of exemplars living in the Gargano”. The guide also pointed out the trail was marked but “ It is possible that along the routes the marked signs aren’t to see any more because someone has taken them away”. Well, there were no signs after the trailhead… ... read more

Day 16 continued Teramo to Vieste We traveled through a warm, sunny day to the south of Italy. We took both backroads and the autostrata, staying mostly along the coast, and ending up on the Gargona peninsula this afternoon. We actually navigated right to a B&B in the oldest part of the city, without a hitch. After the nightmare of our last attempt, with the GPS and locals sending us down impossibly narrow deadend streets in Ascoli (where Bill stayed much calmer than Lynn even though he was driving…), this was wonderful…the B&B was open (much or even most of this area closes up in the winter), reasonable, and newly renovated (The original building is from the 11th century.) We checked in, and then walked around town before it got dark. Being Saturday night, there were ... read more

Day 14 Perugia to Citta della Pieve We had our ups and downs (literally and figuratively) on our first day with a car. We arrived at the train station by bus, after waiting out a hail storm at the hotel. We didn't see our car rental place and asked at Hertz for directions. Either through an honest mistake or due to a mean and vindictive nature, the man at Hertz send us on a complicated search far from the station. We soon stopped and called, finding out that the rental place was in the same building as the station. We retraced our steps, got our Fiat Punto, and navigated quite easily out of Perugia in the rain. We took a scenic route east into the hills to Gubbio, arriving in a downpour. We thought we would ... read more
