Had toast and coffee for breakfast - nice to have something this early in the day without Jalapenos. We were all running low on cash so headed off to El Banco. The bank was shut - it's Sunday. The ATM however was working fine, gave me cash but got so confused when I asked for a balance that it took my card. Damn. I have to queue tomorrow morning to try and get it back ... I have no idea how to explain it in Spanish - 9am though is when I'll be there, and I'll be back every hour until I have my card again... I don't have any other option. The 1000 pesos ($100) will have to last me until then - I think it will, though I won't get far without the card. ... read more

We caught an overnight coach from Ensanada to Lorreto - it cost us $60 or $560 pesos, but it took 16 hrs. 16 hrs is the longest I've ever spent on a coach, I'm glad most of it was through the night where I managed to sleep. Due to their being three of us one of us had to sit with a stranger, I was willing to roll the dice and see who turned up - if s/he had spoken a little English I could have really accelerated my Spanish knowledge. It was a fat middleaged Mexican woman - I said "Hola" she looked away out of the window and communicated from then on soley by kicks, grunts, snores and farts. This was the first really unfriendly Mexican I had met - and I had 16 ... read more

Ensenada boasts Mexico largest flag. The Mexicans really like their flags, this one is about 100m across and dominates the landscape, visible from nearly all parts of the city. I think that I should introduce the team for phase II of Mexico properly. Me: Ali - 26 year old transient - enough has been said already. Matt: 26 year old English guy with an American passport - love of alcohol, women and spicy food. Used to work in London in the city for Abby National - thought there must be more to life and decided to travel the world just in case he was right... seems familiar. Robbie aka Boghen/RoboGhen: 24 year old Canadian from New Brunswick, loves women, soccer, mild food and adventure - good looking guy gets lots of attention from the ladies. Bi-Lingual ... read more

To the Americans TJ is known as the town where the 18-21 year olds go to be served in bars - a restriction that the back home in Britain is seen as very silly. Our friend Steve had been thrown out of just about every bar in four states so we decided that the last night of the Road trip should be in a bar. I met a Mexican guy in the SD hostel - "don't go, it's a shit hole, it's not Mexico". We explained and he agreed that it's probably a good way to end the trip. To get from the USA to Mexico you get on a trolley bus in Down Town San Diego spend $2.25 for a ticket and ride down to the border - about 8 miles away. You then get ... read more

After the road trip across from Utah I needed to rest a little. The USA Hostel, down town San Deigo had large airy rooms, friendly staff and free waffles for breakfast - all for $19 per night. I've been told that Oz is way cheaper - but that is the cheapest hostel so far - I booked up three nights. The hostel was located in the Gas Lamp Quarter, real scenic, lots of bars. America does actually have some nice beer. Samual Adams - real beer - like the english stuff - hops and malt and flavor. At $5 a pint it bloody well should be nice - had one pint and went to Ralphs supermarket - picked up 12 Corona for $9 and went back to the hostel - getting in training for Mexico. So ... read more

Driving along the interstate 15 down toward Zion National Park we saw signs for Cedar and thought that this city would obviously be the best place to spend the night. Try out a real American small town bar, get to meet some of the locals, maybe listen to some "country and western". After finding a motel we asked the receptionist were the nearest bar was. The nearest of the two only 3 blocks. 3 blocks actually turned out to be nearly a mile and a half, but we were treated to a display of local Friday night activities - getting in the pickup, driving at high speed down the central strip, playing loud music and screaming. Steve, our Taiwanese American friend, was worried that it was because they'd never seen a china man before and were ... read more

The drive to Zion National Park took us through Hurricane, a small town that obviously makes nearly all of its money from the traffic on the way to Zion National Park, stopped for breakfast at Jerry's' Diner and had the best 1/2 pound cheese burger in the US so far - $3.70 with fries. At Zion National Park we hiked up a trail known as Angels Landing, about 4 hours trek there and back and a treacherous section involving steep drops and chains. Again we were treated to some spectacular views. But the weirdest thing was the people we got chatting to at the top. One guy from the bronx knew London as he had appeared on Top of The Pops in a band called Soul System, another guy was seeing 2 Shakespear plays a day ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon July 5th 2002

Lesser known than the Grand Canyon but equally impressive, Bryce Canyon lies in southern Utah. We drove out to Bryce Canyon from Las Vegas, about 4 hrs, we passed through Zion National Park. Bryce Canyon was the maddest place, huge numbers of rock pillars rise up from the valley floor in shades of red, orange and brown, about 300 ft tall. Truly one of the most impressive natural spectacles I've yet to see. I walked for only a few miles within the canyon, along "Navaho Walk", watched the sunset, and then headed out to look for a cheap motel.... read more

We stayed in a real American motel - got the room cheap as the receptionist could go home early after renting out this last one. One king size bed - three guys - shit. Enough male bonding for one lifetime has already happened on this slightly crazy road trip. In the morning after an uneventful night, we made our way to the Hoover Dam - its big impressive etc etc. Las Vegas is one of the most excessive places I have ever been, we parked the cruiser at Bellagios - the biggest, first, most expensive casino/hotel of them all. After walking around a while in the desert heat and checking out the Hotel prices for the 4th of July - $179 was the cheapest - we checked into another hostel. After sorting out our new hostel ... read more

11hrs drive from San Diego is the Grand Canyon, we got there at about 7pm - we travelled along route 66. Stopped at a real live diner in a place called Needles. The Hungry Bear, and the big portions of food would have certainly attracted bears in Yosemite. The Canyon itself is about 5-6000ft deep and very impressive - I doubt the photos of it I have taken will do it justice - your sense of depth perception just gets totally screwed - every thing beyond a certain distance looks completely flat, 2D, like you could almost just step out right into it. That's also known as the 12 second tour - the time it takes to fall to the bottom. I witnessed one of the best sunsets I have ever seen, must be all the ... read more
