3 hrs drive saw us to San Diego - its really relaxed, lots of surf dudes and beach bunnies. We checked in to the Ocean Beach Hostel - spent the afternoon on the beach sleeping. Woke for the free BBQ at the hostel at six. Chatted to loads of people and made our way to a bar. Steve is twenty one in September - unfortunately that isn't good enough for state law and so we looked to see what else we could do. The hostel has received so many complaints that they don't allow drinking anywhere after nine. The bars are all ID crazy - one of the girls at the hostel said that down on the beach there are often fires which people gather around and party - so we went down to look for ... read more

I drove the PT Cruiser into Los Angeles - along some of the maddest roads I have ever been on. The highways stretch out over 6 lanes each side, people overtake on all sides and the signs are crap, one thing the UK does a lot better than the US is road signs. In the US signs just indicate the very next exit with maybe 1/2 a mile notice. Matt managed to revert to UK driving - on the left - at a truck stop - which could have been very nasty, and I nearly side swiped a cop car on a weird intersection - we got away with both, we are very lucky guys. We dropped the bike off and checked into a USA International hostel - very nice facilities, ensuite dorms - only 4 ... read more

In Lonely Planets guide to the USA there is a brief paragraph on camping out in the wilderness areas of Calafornia. Yosemite National Park is meant to be one of the most scenic places to visit. A couple of guys (Matt & Steve) in the hostel were intrigued by the idea - just guys - maybe it's the machismo. Little did they realise what they were about to let themselves in for. We hired a car at a grand total of $398 - made a trip to walmart to pick up supplies - you can get just about everything in Walmart - including guns and machettes, though the food selection was fairly limited - lots of beans. We bough enough water for us to last the 3 nights, 9 gallons, 1 gallon per person per day. ... read more

I've booked up a car with two new friends to travel south. Matt, Steve and I will be driving to Yosemite today to camp in the wilderness. I spent lots of time yesterday reading about bears. To trek in the national parks you need a bear proof container - and in it goes everything that vaguely resembles food, any toiletries and even deoderant. The containers are made of thick plastic and open with the aid of a quarter. The bears don't even bother trying to open these containers, presumably because they don't have any change. We have the car for a week and hope also to see the grand canyon and death valley - so I get to achieve my ambition of visiting desert. I'll be sorry to leave the hostel which I have met so ... read more

Alcatraz - trust the Americans to take a top security prison that has been "home" to some of the most violent and notorious criminals of the 20th century - and to turn it into the biggest tourist attraction in the city. I booked a tour with Cherolyn from Canada - and embarked on the journey. (Aside - this travelling thing is cool - just walk into a room of strangers and ask if anyone wants to go to prison today, and someone will.) I've seen the island in so many movies - too see it in real life is awesome, shame about all the tourists - but hey pot kettle black etc. The ferry journey is so quick and the first thing you notice is that it is cold - I'd forgot my jumper. On landing ... read more

San Francisco is the bollocks. It's frantastico - sorry thats crap... Anyway - I've booked a trip to Alcatraz for tomorrow - had clam chowder and a had a generally very nice day. The highlight of the day was the 52nd floor of the Bank of America - $5 for a beer in the restaurant on the top floor and you get to sit at the top of this very cool building and just look down - and around at the amazing SF vistas. The music they play sucks though. I've also visited the Palace of Fine arts - a reconstructed psuedo Greek temple structure built for a 1905 exhibition. The photos (when added) show how beautiful it is. After wandering around the Palace for a bit I found what I thought would be the Fine ... read more

I'm here ! I've made it out of the UK and in to the USA - so many firsts for me over the past 24 hrs... First time out of Europe, first time in the states, first time with a passport stamp, first time through the metal detectors without bleeping. The plane journey was uneventful - enjoyed three movies and read a lot. Couldn't sleep too excited. Upon arrival I was worried about customs and imigration - and the ton of junk I've bought over with me - I had my travel guitar with me and everyone kept asking - "Is that a guitar?" - it worked a charm - by distracting all attention from me I was out of the airport and into the wide open spaces in about 20mins - bus to down town ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Norfolk » Hempstead May 24th 2002

I still haven't left. But I'm having a great time in Norfolk - bar the many injections. I've decided to visit South America on my travels. It sounds fantastic - cheap, and breath-taking. The downside is that I have to be injected against just about everything - I need a yellow fever certificate just to get in, rabis, hepatitus B, TB, tetanus, polio etc etc are all recommended - I'm mid way through the course of injections. Hey at least I'll be around for the world cup. I've been visiting friends around Norfolk - some that I haven't seen for 5 years or more, wierd the way with some people you can just pick up right where you left off - just with more stuff to talk about. Here are some photo's of Norfolk - I ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Norfolk » Hempstead April 28th 2002

I left Norfolk when I was 18 to go to Uni and apart from the long summer breaks whilst a student I haven't been back for more than a week at any one time. It's a bit strange being back. Hempstead is a small village very near Holt, six miles south of Sheringham. It has the grand total of 72 houses, 1 post box, 1 church, 1 public telephone box and fortunately 1 pub. It's a complete contrast to London - time seems to have slowed right down - I've been back about a week but it feels like a month. The event of the week has been the birth of a foal across the road - the photos here are when it was only about 12 hrs old. Already brave - after I had stood ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Buckinghamshire » Milton Keynes April 18th 2002

After spending a few days in Milton Keynes I'm started to get a feel for the place. It's large - everything has been given a great deal of space. I arrived at Milton Keynes central rail station and walked the mile up to the city centre to explore. The city centre is basically a series of huge intercontected malls and car parks. The city has been described as a series of endless roundabouts - from my point of view it was a series of endless underpasses. To be honest walking around Milton Keynes was no where near as difficult as I had expected, the walkways and cycle paths are combined and it seems possible to get to any other point in the city without having to cross (or cycle on) one of the many dual carriage ... read more
