Hi there friends, family and random blog readers. I am officially certified to scuba dive in open water. The course was really fun and diving with Abby after the course was even more fun. Unfortunately, some storms had passed through Koh Tao before we arrived and the visibiity was not its usually 30-60+ feet. We also found that for a small island there were an awful lot of divers and that the tour companies seemed to congregate at one dive site rather than spread out around the island, as a result there was a lot of traffic and damaged coral:(. After finishing the course, however, Abby and I went around to the less populated side of the island and had two fantastic nights on a really quiet beach (Ao Leuk) with awesome snorkeling. In fact the ... read more

hello family and friends. i am currently in thailand. yay!! some of you may have known that i was heading out to thailand for a week to visit my brother. i arrived late last night, and spent the morning shopping. my first impression of bangkok was that it was smelly, noisey, and dirty. the next morning i confirmed my initial thoughts, adding to the list, damn hot. but inspite of these seemingly negative characters, i quite like it here. i haven't seen so many foriengers (caucasians) for about 5 months now, and the shopping is unimaginable. so, i woke up early this morning, prepared to do cultural things, such as check out the grand palace. however, i ended up shopping for hours. i did develope a useful system. because it is too hot to barter well, ... read more

Well, as promised, we took a camera with us as part of our Advanced Open Water course - although taking pictures underwater will require some more practice. We’re both now certified (or should that be certifiable?) PADI divers after undergoing 2 courses and 11 dives in a fun-filled week and half in wonderful Koh Tao - can’t wait to get to Oz now to start exploring the Great Barrier Reef! Our advanced course consisted of 5 dives - deep water, photography, naturalist, navigation and best (and scariest) of all a night dive! Armed only with our torches we descended into the deep just as the sun was setting above us for the day. Totally different kettle of fish (sorry) diving at night but you get to see things in a completely different light (or lack of ... read more

I have arrived. Day 1 in Bangkok is drawing to a close and I am absolutely knackered. I got here with no problems at all, Etihad airways (or Jihad airways as I like to call them) were much better than expected. But flying overnight is never fun, especially as the time difference made it feel a lot earlier for me. I got about 10 mins sleep on the plane (not an exageration) and today really feels like yesterday if you know what I mean. I'm determined to stay up though so I can beat the jet lag. Now, as for the actual events. Well today has been a complete shock to the system. Everyone warns you about it before you go but there is no preparing for the noise and hectic activity that meets you in ... read more

Today we headed to Bottle Beach, which is only accessible by boat, so we got a Long boat from Chaloklum. You could see instantly why this was a prime spot, the water was crystal clear and the sand pure white. We had a bungalow that was about 2 and half metres off the ground, which was essentially just a wooden box with a double bed in the middle and a fan. We noticed our neighbours next door were a bit hysterical and they told us they had a massive spider on the porch of their bungalow, which was poisonous so the man from the resort was spraying it with high toxic stuff!! We hoped we would not come across any of them. Once back in the room Ol noticed a massive cockroach in the shower, he ... read more

We woke up early, refreshed from our early nights sleep. We then boarded a mini-van that took us to the bus depot where we joined other keen tourists to travel to the famous floating markets. It was a wonderful day. First we stopped at a coconut sugar factory (for want of a better word) where we tasted the sugar, and saw how it was made. The place was pretty cool, they had siamese fighting fish that you could aggravate, and a funky tourist shop. However the highlight of that stopover was the toilets. Firstly you lined up and paid your 8 baht and recieved your 3 sheets of toilet paper. Next you went in and accomplished the task, in nice european style toilets which were perfectly cleaned and serviced after each person, then used the nice ... read more

Got up the next morning, got in the shower, noticed my big toe was hurting and there was blood on the floor. There was a large gash on the tip of my toe. Blood on the sheets, blood on the floor of our room, a puddle of blood (with a toe print in it) outside our door, and a trail of blood leading back to the beach. Beach + alcohol = injury of unknown origin. Returned the motorbikes, checked out, and got a taxi to the dock. Took the boat to Chumphon and got the bus back to Bangkok, about eight hours. After having major stomach problems Dan wanted McDonalds, so we got McDelivery for dinner.... read more

Arrived at the GRASS Hut airport. Man it was classic, all in the open, tiny we convayer belt, funny as. We stayed at a really nice place i would say around 4 stars. We did pay for it though but sure was relaxing. Beautiful pool, two restuarants, right on the beach with a spa. It must have been over 40 degrees that day, however we still walked for ages. ... read more
