We decided to go to this national park for a change of scenery and spend a few days away from the beach. We arrived 2 days after the Full Moon Party (I was still Slightly hungover!!) on the 21st February. After the full moon party there is a mass of travellers leaving Koh Phagnan so the ferries off the island are very busy. The journey to Khao Sok involved a ferry then a minibus. Once we arrived we found some accommodation at Banana Hut Resort. On our first day in Khao Sok we went on a tour around Cheow Larn Lake. This is a massive man-made lake. The scenery was amazing. We went on a longboat around the lake then we were able to swim in the water. Being in freshwater felt really refreshing, we stayed ... read more

Hope you all enjoyed reading the last blog. Apologies for the mix up on the photos and the descriptions, they were all fine until the blog was published. I think a similar thing is going to happen now with this one, don't think the photos are in the correct order. Anyway back to this blog..... Going to Khao Sok National Park is one of the main reasons why I wanted to come to Thailand. Its located in the Surat Thani province - its land area is 739km squared. The park is a remmant of rainforest which is older and more diverse than the Amazon Rainforest! It is truly the most amazing place I've ever been too. I really can't understand why so many tourists bypass it on the way to the islands. They are seriously missing ... read more

After hopping on a local bus at Surat Thani we headed west through the familiar landscape of Southern Thailand...lush vegetation, coconut palms, rubber plantations and typical busy townships. After two hours the scenery became more mountainous and farms gave way to jungle as we arrived at Khao Sok National Park. This huge protected preserve is part of the world's oldest rainforest and the damp, oozing jungle is towered over by incredible soaring karst formations. We're staying at a place called 'Our Jungle House' where we have our own treehouse perched in the forest overlooking the dense vegetation and flowing river below. The treehouse is pretty rustic but comfortable and thankfully has good mosquito nets! This morning we set off after breakfast and headed to the National Park Headquarters where we picked up a map and started ... read more

What a wonderful place to wake up to! Khaoh Sok, is Southern Thailands largest national park that covers around 500 square Kilometres and is home to many large wild mammals such as the tiger, leopard and elephant. Sounds scary, but you are very unlikely to encounter any of these majestic beasts on a single day hike in the park. You would have to head much deeper into the untouched jungle to have the possibility of catching a glimpse of one. And even then, the likelihood of seeing one is unfortunately very slim. Breakfast was cooked in the rickety little restaurant by the managers wife and was pretty good! Boiled eggs and toast for me. Mr Tawee told us to gather our things for the hike while his wife prepared us a Pad Thai packed lunch, ... read more

I admit it. I am cheating a bit. I am going to combine two days in one, primarily because we took a two-day excursion to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok. This trip taught me a lot of things about life and about myself. Here are a few of these important lessons: 1. Men should never wear speedos... ever... EVER! 2. My phobia of snakes is enhanced when sleeping in a shack on the water. 3. I am really scared of dark caves but did not discover this until too late to turn around. 4. I am so scared of dark caves that the big hairy spiders and bats didn't even phase me. 5. I refuse to take any pictures of anyone when in forementioned dark cave, as I am so intent on escaping I cannot ... read more

Obviously I'm still a few days behind. We are on the beautiful island of Koh Lanta now. I purposely didn't do my blog on Thursday evening because Z kept looking over my shoulder. My creativity is severely diminished when I have people reading it while I am writing it... plus, he keeps trying to change things :). Tuesday was our devoted travel day to get from the north to the south. We took the plane to Phuket through Air Asia where it was bright and sunny; no sign of rain to be seen. I was a bit worried from all the reports of flooding and that the rainy season was being extra long down south that we would be having a rainy, miserable time. Up until now, we had encountered about 2 hours total of rain. ... read more

We all stepped of the train after no more than 3 hours of interupted sleep each to the southern area of Surat Thani. We were taken under our local guides wings - Tuk. We left our big backpacks at his mums house and headed with an overnight bag for a long-tail boat ride into the heart of Khao Sok National Park. We stopped half way for some cliff jumping and swimming in a lovely cove. By lunch time we had reached our accommodation for the night which were basic floating bungalows made from bamboo in the middle of the national park. The food there was provided by the locals and was very delicious. We had a spot of kayaking before tucking into the Sang Som and laughing the night away. Some of the gang decided to ... read more

The journey from Koh Samui to Khao Sok was pretty much a nightmare! we were woke up arround 7:30 by someone who couldn't speak english pointing to a piece of paper that said "8:00 bus". We had booked on the 12 o'clock bus and had arranged to pick our washing us just before 12:00, so i tried to explain to the guy that we weren't meant to be leaving for over 4 hours and showed him our booking slip. All he said "ok" and wondered off. 1 hour later he's knocking on our door again and says "why you not bus?". I said to him again that i was on the 12 o'clock bus and we need to pick up our washing. He simply said "ok, no problem" but obviously the bus must have been waiting ... read more

Day Seven - Phi Phi to Koh Sok The alarm went off at 6:00am so we could start packing and getting ready to leave for the taxi longboat that takes us to the main town from the resort at 8:00am. We thought the ferry left Phi Phi for Krabi at 10:30 but when we got there at 8:45 we were told it was 9:00! So we quickly bought our tickets and jumped on the ferry just in time. We sat inside this time as the sky was looking a bit grey - the journey took 2 hours and when we arrived in Krabi we were decided that we were going to get a taxi to the general bus station and just hop on the bus to Koh Sok.........we were told at the ferry port at krabi ... read more

Day Eight - Koh Sok National Park Woke up completely exhausted today!? Today has really been a re-charging the batteries day as me and Mat have hardly done anything! We have read, swam in the river and sunbathed all day long!! The trips and excursions are available but the resort is cash only and we didn't have enough money on us to take part today - but we both didn't mind as i think we needed to just chill out. Early start tommoro to get the 8:30 ferry from Surat Thani to Koh Tao. We have to get a taxi from the resort at 6:30am to make it on time!! Everything will be packed tonight so that we are ready to go. I think we are both looking forward to seeing the beach again and getting ... read more
