Today I got up late again! Wasnt sure what I should be doing, but I felt like starting my journey up north towards Chang Mai. But first I will be stopping at Sukhothai to check out the beautiful ruins of Thailands (then Siam) most impressive ancient city. So I reserved a bed at a guest house there (took me 30 min and some help from reception to work out how to use the darn phone system here) then had brunch. Later I checked out and after a bit of bartering I found a cheap taxi ride to the Bus station. There I got my bus ticket and then started my six hour bus journey to Sukhothai. The bus was very comfortable (a little clinical) with air conditioning. This was surprisingly 2nd class so god knows what ... read more

Pak Chong to Phitsunalok/SukhothaiJason & Kirstyn O After a great stay at Pak Chong it was time to brave the public transport system again, this time across and up to Phitsanoluk. While not that far in distance, it did take us all day to get there on our bus which was totally crowded but thankfully it had a/c (sort of) and we got seats. Found a great hotel which was cheap and had a TV (what luxury). Phitsanoluk was suprisingly a really nice place. It had a great night market which was very peaceful, not too touristy and a beer garden area where you could buy "towers" of beer (plastic tube with a tap to pour). We weren't game enough to have a crack with just the two of us! Lovely setting right on the River ... read more

Hello in Thai! The train ride from Bangkok to Ayathaya was not too bad. I fell asleep for a bit and woke up paranoid that I missed my stop. Luckily I didn't. I tried communicating w/ another group of travelers who seemed friendly untill they found out I was American. They (French maybe?) scoffed at me and turned away. Whatever. We have a pretty bad reputation due to our governments' policies and our actions in the Middle East. I don't blame them at all, but not all of us are rude, obnoxious Republicans out to destroy the world for a profit. I'm not going to let it bother me and the friendly Thai people more than make up for a few snotty and pompous assholes. The Thai have all been so friendly and welcoming. They ... read more

And now for something completley different after the madness of Ko Samui and Ko Panagan. On the 6th March Shane and I set off for Bangkok arriving late that night. I had a cool stop over in Bangkok. Everytime I visit this city I get a better impression of it! On the 7th still in Bangkok I went bargain hunting round Koh San road. That evening I headed to a massive shopping centre called MBK. This was truly 1st world Thailand in action. The place was huge at 7 stories selling everything you can imagine. We had a bit of R ‘n’ R in the arcade before heading to a Japanese restaurant in the mall for one of the best meals I have ever eaten. On the 8th we caught a bus to a town half ... read more

... read more

Day 2 19/02/07 - Temple Sri Chum and Temple Saphan Hin 很喜欢Sri Chum里的佛像,除了建筑的独特,佛像眉目慈祥。在建筑里无论无论你走在那个角落,佛陀都会对你发出慈祥的微笑。... read more

Hello one and all!! After several attempts to get my travel blog up and running, here it is - alive and on the web! Sukhothai was the first stop on my planned two and a half month jaunt around northern Thailand, Laos and if time and funds are still holding up, western Cambodia. March 2nd I caught the train from Bangkok and arrived to Phi-lok (a town an hour outside of Sukhothai) in the evening, settling in to my Chinese, American wild west, Harley Davidson themed guesthouse, the London Hotel. Getting there by rail was great because the views are not of passing cars and gas stations, but of quaint village whistle stops, rice fields and mountain jungle. The next day, I got on the bus to the historic district of Sukhothai, the former capital of ... read more

The thrill of market and temple hopping eventually wore off. After about a week-and-some in Chiang Mai, the trio (Sodahead still suffered from his ankle ailment) to my delight made the decision to go south to the province of Sukhothai! We hired a car and driver for the day to take us the four hours to the town. Along the way we discovered that our driver, Boonphat, spoke perfect English and had been more around the United States than any of us! He has founded an organization called The New Life Ministries Foundation, and it has about a dozen projects going on at the moment--Children Education Sponsorship Project, Tribal Culture and Environment Reservation Project, and Emergency Humanitarian Relief Project are just naming a few. He was inspired to do so after a couple from America ... read more

So I came back to Bangkok with Scott, the Californian, (who had a voice and something in his accent that reminded me of my house mate Elliotte and made me feel comfortable with him). Unfortunately, he was on his way back to the States so after we had shared a taxi from the bus station back to the backbacker area our ways departed. I was left to find a place for the night. This was exactly something I wanted to save myself from with careful planning - arriving late to a big city without a hotel reservation - and already, after a week, failed to do. I tried some seven hotels which all were fully booked and started to get worried. It's not exactly fun to go from one place to another carrying an 18 kg ... read more

I have figured out a little of the attention I have been getting. A woman grabbed my arm in the market who could speak a little English and put her arm next to mine and pointed at mine and said, "I like". Apparently they all want to have really pale skin here, including the sun screen that you can buy in spf 90 and contains whitening ingredients! The tour guide showed us how they are wanting so bad to be light that they wrap in all these covers when they are out in the sun, including big hats and scarfs that make them look a bit like train robbers to me! The tour guide is a Thai from Sukothai. She took us out for dinner to a delicious thai restraunt our first night, and I met ... read more
