Crossing from Chile to Argentina took the best part of the day. Driving through one mountain pass we reached 5000 meters, coming down the other side was amazing possibly one of the most scenic roads in the world, like the one on the Italian job but Andean in scale. Its hard to describe how beautiful the Andie's are for the whole 6 weeks I would look around me and think oh photo opp, then oh another and another till I realized I had taken 100 scenery shots that day. Also when your so high up its so peaceful and calm, I imagined it to be blowing a gale, but it was nothing but blue cloudless sky's, hot weather every day and world class vistas. We arrived in the town of Salta that afternoon and camped again ... read more

Right I am writing this 5 months after I arrived back home. I could not keep up with the blog while I was in South America as I was always on the move due to the fact I was on a guided tour. Thus, my writings from here on in are based on memory which may be a little sketchy re day to day details, however the pictures from South America are some of the best yet so I will finish what I started. Prior to landing in Santiago I stopped over in Fiji for a week. Fiji was like a holiday within a holiday. I did sod all apart from sun my self and read during the day; gorge on food and party at night. I ended up on one of the little Islands called ... read more

Well i finally made it to my last stop in Australia, the tropical city of Cairns. I really liked Cairns, it has a very laid back typically Ozzy feel to it. The Architecture in northern Queensland is different to that of say NSW or Victoria because of the heat. Wooden houses are build on stilts and have a very wild west kind of feel to them. In the middle of the city there is a lagoon where people lounge about all day and cool down in the water. The beaches around Cairns are generally off limits to swimmers due to the abundant variety of marine life that will kill you very painfully! Cairns is very backpacker orientated, many places offer cheap food and booze and you can party there every night if you are so inclined, ... read more

Mission beach is another place in Australia where there is nothing much there. It´s pretty much another 1 street town right on the beach. The main draw for me was the promise of white water rafting on the Tully River. This day was class, probably the best single activity that I did in Austrlaia. All the ingridients where there sun, high water levels and a good group of rafters. The trip from Mission beach to the starting point on the river was about 1hr. In total we rafted for around 5 hrs back to the offices of the company. The rapids them selves ranged in intensity from grade 3 to 4 so they were pretty taxing, much more than a mere trickle. I was with a group of jokers, guys I had met off the ... read more

Magnetic island is so named because of it's impact on Captain Cooks navigational equipment during his vovage up the east coast. The island lies 20 mins off the coast of Townsville. Rich and I headed straight there and ended up at base backpackers home to the monthly full moon party. The backpackers it's self was really nice, more of a resort on the beach than budjet accomodation. It was situated right on it's own little patch of beach lined with palm trees. There was a big bar / decking area which then gave way to the accomodation which kind of looked a little like the beachside huts in SE Asia, despite the fact there was ten to a room, not one. That first night was the full moon party. It was in no way as ... read more

The next stop on my Oz experience was Airlie Beach, gateway to the 74 Whitsunday islands. The islands prior to the last ice age were a mountain range. Due to rising sea leves and the process of erosion 74 small islands off the coast are all that is left. The fist night was spent in Airlie it’s self which is basically another 1.5 street party / backpacker town. With the Oz experience bus we got a cheap meal and free alcohol on the first night, never a good start when you are up at the crack of dawn the following morning to board an ex Americas Cup racing boat. Needless to say in the morning of our embarkation both Rich and I felt like hot turd, exasperated by the fact that it was cold and ... read more

Kroombit was a class little stop over curtsey of the Oz experience. It’s basically a working cattle farm which opens its doors to tourists who fancy themselves as a bit of a Jackaroo (the name of a young cattle hand in Oz). We pulled in to the smell of sizzling steaks which is always a good start in my book. Well fed and watered we were showed to our respective horses which we would be riding on for the coming goat muster. It was cool experience to trot off from the cattle station into the surrounding hills to herd up goats. There stubborn little buggers, stopping to eat anything in there path you have to be quite dexterous with the old reigns to make sure you get them all. As expected I got the arsey ... read more

Here it is, the main event in Oz, Frasier Island. It's from this point onwards that things started to get really amazing in Australia. Rainbow beach was the next stop on the east coast and it doubled as our embarkation point for Frasier Island. Prior to Frasier, Rich and I spent two nights in Rainbow beach in order to do a skydive. The morning after we arrived in Rainbow we found ourselves in the back of a people mover on our way to a little grassy airstrip 10 mins away from the centre of town. A quick coin toss dictated that I was to go up first while Rich waited nervously on the beach for my landing. Normally we would have gone up in the same plane but one of the instructors was sick. I spent a week in Noosa all told. The Place is really nice and pretty upmarket. It lies right on the coast so Its home to nice beaches and good surf. Again it's a pretty small place, no larger than Byron Bay consisting only of a few blocks or residences and a single high street. Also, right next to the city is a national park, the most visited in Australia. The park is stunning; I did a good 2 hr walk through it emerging on the coastal walk back into town. The sun was shining without a cloud in the sky, beautiful. Along the way I saw a lizard which was around 2 feet long just sitting on the path in front of me. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get a picture to back up ... read more

From Byron we travelled to the Gold Coast, arriving at a city called Surfers Paradise. I for one was really surprised by the size of the place. I expected a small town like Byron not a city complete with neon and skyscrapers. The place is pretty tacky really. Its clearly a modern place and many of the buildings just look fake. Like something you would see in a Disney land resort. Its pretty hard to explain without pictures. Again like most places up the east coast, Surfers is a party town. The night after we arrived we signed up for a club crawl around the city. This turned out to be a really good night and we more than made back the cost of our ticket with free entry’s and drinks in all the places. ... read more
