So right now we're in Sukhothai. The original capital of Thailand. It was a 5 hour train ride north out of Bangkok, and an hour trip in a songtaew to get here. A songtaew is basically a pickup truck w benches in the back. We were all comletely covered in dust when we finally arrived at No. 4 Guesthouse. I didn't see any other numbers, but ours is called No. 4. It's a nice place, the owners are very, very friendly. Last night they cooked us this giant buffet. Some very spicy dishes included. Really good though. We also tried some local hooch. When we asked our tour guide what it was, she replied moonshine. Hehe. Yep, it's great for degreasing engines, removing paint and killing braincells. After dinner, we headed into town to a place ... read more

Yay!! We have arrived in Sukothai!! We ended up with quite a nice hostel here, in a large wooden house, beds were rock rock hard though!!! New Sukothai which is where we were staying was pretty grim. Its like time has forgotten this place and everything is so ducty and old. Its pretty much stuck right in the middle of nowhere... We cycled around the runis which was fun....first bit of exercise my body had experienced in weeks!!!! I have to get to the gym pretty soon!! We found this really cool bar in New Sukothai called Chopper. I had the most surreal evening it was fab. First there were loads of fireworks being let off, they were really good, then this elephant walked past - (this appeared to be a normal occurence)then this Hindu wedding ... read more

A brief comment about Thai transport. The rail network is not extensive and is slow. There is a national bus network (also not exactly rapid) serving many destinations, but within towns and in more rural districts this is supplemented by fleets of songthaews (pronounced "song tao"). Though these come in different sizes, the standard one consists of 2 facing benches in the back of a vehicle (the name means something like "2 rows"). Some ply fixed routes, but most operate on the principles of i) picking up people going roughly in the same direction, and ii) not going anywhere until a financially viable number of passengers has clambered in. I took my first songthaew to Ayutthaya bus station in order to catch a bus to Sukhothai. In hindsight, I think the driver kicked out his existing ... read more

Sukhothai - a dirty town with a dirty name, home to us for a grand total of 1 day, was a replicate of some wild west town where the latest technology was the knife and fork. Went there to see the ruins before travelling to Bangkok. The ruins were certainly impressive at the entrance but tom had spotted on the map an almost hidden ruin far away down a desolate road. As we had rented out some bicycles for the tour we hiked it across to this hugely dissapointing monument, it took us three around an hour to bike there only to be severely let down, out of breath, out of liquid and baking under the midday sun. He got more than a slap on the wrist for his troubles, the abuse continues...... Got the VIP ... read more

Well, we are in old Sukhothai right now. Our transport is the good old fashioned bike. I guess I am not used to biking anymore as my "derriere" is a bit senstive right now. We are staying at the Orchid Hibiscus Guesthouse, a great place with cabins made from teak wood and the host is Paolo, who moved here years ago from Italy. His voice is like the godfather himself. every morning we get breakfast with classical music (Paps you would love it here ). A delicious item on the breakfast menu is coconut pudding in a banana leaf, with fresh honey and banana. The bananas are very tasteful here. Every Thursday is the local market here. we were maybe one out of 10 foreigners, the rest was all Thai. Unbelievable what you could buy at ... read more

Sukothai is a small town an hour west of Phitsanulok by a local teeth-rattling bus. Home of Thailand's most impressive World Heritage site, Old Sukothai is best discovered by bike. I visited the Sukothai Historical Park during the day which was a pity as it would have been nicer to see in morning or evening light. I did it from 11am to 4pm which was of course the hottest time of day! Here I quote my Lonely Planet: "The park includes remains of 21 historical sites and four large ponds within the old walls, with an additional 70 sites within a 5km radius". Needless to say, I only managed about a quarter of the whole thing but I think I saw most best bits. I met a German girl in the bus back who was doing ... read more

It took 7 hours from Chiang Mai to the town of Phitsolanuk. Then from there it's another 1 hour on the bus to the historical town of Sukothai. Even though there's maps in our guidebook. Whenever we arrive in a new city, it's dissorienting. Phitsolanuk is a rather boring town so the tuk tuks know when they see tourists that we're just passing through to Sukothai. We decided to take the bus to the bus station, from there we take the 1 hour bus to town. Hope that makes sense! it's been a month since we've been on the road, and I figure we're still getting a hang of the system. This time I think we really figured it out. The first bus we found brought us to a private bus station, where the private busses ... read more

Try number three to get this posted. My computer seems to do funny things these days.. I'll try to rewrite what I had. I decided to go to Sukhothai this weekend. I took the "minibus" to Sukothai via Tak squahed in the back until the fourth person in the backseat was asked to leave at the checkpoint for immigration violations. The police are too corrupt here... it's quite apparent. I got to Sukhothai. My "hotel" resembled by living quarters with a TV and quasi hot water but that;s what you get for what I paid. I got to watch the one English station Australian Network. New Sukothai is about 15 km from the Old historical Park so I decided to rent a motorbike. I think this one was a lot better as I had no problems ... read more
