Arriving in Sukothai in time for the last two days, Saturday and Sunday, of the Loy Krathrong festival I consider myself most fortunate to acquire accommodation a kilometer from the historical park. Having never attending this festival before it seemed appropriate to see it here, where it first occurred over 600 years ago. Legend says that the first floating krathrong was placed by Noppomo, consort to King Loethai. The festival is now celebrated all over Thailand on the first full full moon of the 12th month of the traditional thai lunar calender. This means it falls in November, this year around the 5th. A krathong is a small raft made from banana tree bark and folded banana leaves. It is decorated with flowers, candles and incense. Some have an included coin. This is for the spirits which ... read more

Yes i was attacked by an evil Monkey in Lop buri... more on that later!! Sukhothai Historial Park was really really beautiful. It was about a 20 minute local bus ride out to the historial Park. I hired a bike and strolled (can you stroll on a bike???) well peddled slowly anyway. Weather warm, sky blue, grass green and freshly manicured. After a couple of hours cruising around i came to a Massage House....... Geeez, how can i resist i tell ya??? i stopped in for an hour thai massage 100 Baht then hop on my trusty bike, water bottle in front basket and i am away again. After spending the day the Sukhothai Historial Park I caught a local bus back to my Guest house in new Sukhothai. I decided to stay for 2 nights ... read more

We were very sad to leave our fabulous hostel, one of our favourites so far. We arrived in Loei again and quickly jumped on a bus to Phitsanulok. The journey was eventful. Amy and I were allocated seats adjacent to each other on either side of the aisle. Her companion was a very short Thai man whose legs didn't meet the ground. He wasn't short of confidence though and quite friendly. So friendly in fact, he didn't waste any time in time in patting Amy's leg to which he got a firm rebuttal. He must have heard Irish girls are easy! More was to come, as the bus suddenly swerved across the road to avoid a reckless driver, Amy got a big hug off shorty as he clutched his heart in relief. Bless his cotton stocks! ... read more

Firstly, apologies for the severe blog lag! So many adventures, so little time to write about them all! I've already left out quite a few great places, including Hua Hin and Phitsanulok, from my recollections on this blog - and unfortunately, I've also omitted tons of the awesome people who have already made my trip so special - but I'm sure you all understand it's extremely difficult to put everything on here. Rest assured that everything and everyone who has made even the slightest impact on me is included in my journal, where it truly counts. Anyway, after leaving Koh Samui for Phitsanulok via the huge and brand-spanking-new Suvarnabhumi (pronounced "su-wanna-POOM") airport in Bangkok, and spending a pleasant day in P'lok, I travelled to Sukhothai. The old city of Sukhothai, 12 km west of the new ... read more

Matka on edennyt jo Phitsanulokin kautta Sukhothaihin. Phitsanulokissa vietettiin muutama paiva kayden etnologisessa museossa, kavellen kaduilla ja visiteeraten yhdessa temppelissa. Temppelikaynnista muodostui vallan kiintoisa episodi, silla paikallisten mielesta me punanaamat olimme vahintaan yhta mielenkiintoinen nahtavyys kuin Buddha, jota ilmeisimmin olivat tulleet temppeliin tervehtimaan. Jossain pain Thaimaata mahdetaan ylpeana nayttaa valokuvia temppelimatkalla nahdyista ihmeista. Temppelista lahdon jalkeen kaveltiin joenrantakatua kohti hotellia, kun meidan takaa kuuluu vallan selvalla suomen kielella jotta MOI! Tormattiin Polly nimiseen thaimaalaiseen tyttoon, joka oli o... read more

Sukothai was a chance to see more temple ruins which I preferred to Ayuthaya. The old city is about 12 km out of town and most of the temples are set in the Sukothai Historical Park which is beautiful, nicely set out and has been well preserved. I rented a bike again and really enjoyed venturing round the park and taking photos. I even went outside of the park to explore the temples surrounding the area and managed to get away from most of the tourists which was nice. It was there that I randomly bumped into Sophie and Laetitia again and so had the afternoon with them. Sukothai is well worth the trip if you ever come to Thailand...... read more

So after the amazing massages it was on to the ancient temple ruins of Sukhothai. We arrived there late and found ourselves approached by a drunken and disabled tuc tuc driver offering us a lift to a hostel, which we declined. However we ended up getting a taxi to the same place, but on the drive there i kept on expecting to see the other guy in a ditch by the side of the road and his tuc tuc on fire. Anyway we made it safe and sound and got a room with the creepiest bed i think i have ever seen along with 4 other beds but thankfully all for us as no one else would be checking in as it was so late. Anyway the next day we went to the ruins which were ... read more

Paul - Before we start my hair has been coming under fire rather more than I'd like. So I'd just like to say that no, Craig, it doesn't need a cut! And yes, Katie, I have "found" myself and the pre requisit beard will be coming along shortly! Saturday 22nd July Laura - We checked out of our hotel and booked our bus to Sukhothai, an old town on the way back to Bangkok where there are a few ruined temples. Having nothing better to do until our bus journey we decided to go for (another!) massage. This time Paul was allowed to partake, his dodgy stomach finally being better. The massage was heaven once again, especially on those parts that were sore after yesterday's rafting. Paul wasn't as enthused with his massage, but I think ... read more

Drove through most of the day to Sukhothai and stayed in the Ananda Gallery & Museum Hotel. Took an early evening drive around the historical park. Lots of Wats and Chedis. Looked very Anghor looking architecture. Frustratingly, all the Buddha images were facing East so early evening photography was useless pointing the camera straight into the sunlight all the time. Made a mental note to try and photograph Buddha statues at dawn or AM only if I can get out of bed in time in future!... read more

After searching long and hard, we have managed to locate an internet cafe in rural Thailand, so here's the next installment of Backpack Diplomacy. We've spent the last few days negotiating prices with Thai silk merchants, negotiating Chiang Mai’s traffic on a motorbike, and experiencing the exquisite pain of Thai massage. We've also learned to keep our eyes constantly peeled for baby elephants walking down the sidewalk, but more on that in a minute. If you're looking for someone in Chiang Mai, and we mean anyone in Chiang Mai, chances are pretty good that you'll find them at the night bazaar. Actually, finding them in the sea of stuff and people would be quite difficult, but they're probably somewhere between the silk vendors, the designer jean knock-off tables (knocked-off, we’re quite sure, in the same factory ... read more
