Pai is located about four hours from Chiang Mai via a winding road up into the hills. It is an extremely popular stopover for the backpacker crowd... many basing their 'hill tribe treks' from here, and some just settling in for a few weeks or months. So as you might imagine all the western amenities are in abundance. It struck me that even way up here in the hills there is more in terms of amenities, reliable electricity and running water than there is in the capitol city of say Guinea-Bissau. The scenery is amazing, becoming a really intense green in certain light. I am staying in my own little private river bungalow on cement stilts. It is brand new... maybe a little too new because it still smells a bit like wood finish. But ... read more

Tapasin Chiang Maissa saksalaisen Dorten, ja tultiin yhessa Paihin. Vuokrattiin bambusta tehty bungalovi joen varresta. Sankyyn voi kuulla veden kohinan ja meilla on oma terassi joelle pain. Pai on pieni kaupunki vuorten ja viidakon keskella. Kaukana kaikesta. Ihastuttava paikka. Taa on kun oma maailmansa. Paljon rinkkailijoita joka puolelta maailmaa. tutustuu tosi nopeesti ihmisiin, koska meilla kaikilla on jotain yhteista. Sita rupee jutteleen kadulla vieressa kavelevalle, kaupassa jonossa edessa olevalle, ravintolassa viereisessa poydassa istuvalle. Niinpa vuokrattiin skootteri torstaina. Ajeltiin pitkin vuoristoa ja kaytiin uimassa vesiputouksilla. Tavattiin kaksi israelilaista poikaa ja kak... read more

Ehka tilanne muuttuu ennen sita. Ei jotenkaan houkuttais menna takasi... read more

Unfortunately the railway from the south ends at Chiang Mai, therefore the only way to get to Pai is by road. During our many an hour at the local internet café we noticed a poster offering a VIP aircon minibus to Pai and at 250 baht it sounded like a steal. We wasted no time in booking it up for the following morning. We boarded to join one other couple and our initial thoughts were that for the first time in South East Asia we might even get the luxury we were promised! We set off and after about half an hour of winding through the warren of tiny streets that make up the old city, stopping every so often to welcome additional passengers, we found ourselves once again shoe-horned into a mobile greenhouse, sweating our ... read more

Day 1 Wow.... who'd have thought place like Pai really existed? We had heard of this magical place through a number of travellers, and made sure we spent some time heading up to it. Pai is North West of Chiang mai on the way to Maeng Som near the Burma border. Our original plan was to hire a big motorbike and drive ourselves there, but thankfully due to the weather forecast, our short time allowances and my constant questioning as to the safety of the roads, Andrew caved in and we took an over crowded mini-bus instead. And may I just add, it was probably one of the better decisions we've made so far as we were to discover after we began the windy uphill climb through the mountains. The mini bus took about 4 hours ... read more

After spending a day in Chiang Mai recovering from the exertions of the three day trek I headed 4 hours North West to Pai, one of the coolest places I have visited. Pai is a tiny town surrounded by the obligatory picturesque mist covered mountains to which I have become somewhat used to. There is nothing much which is an obvious draw to the town, however it has become a sort of hippy/traveller hangout - the sort of place where people intend to visit for 2 days and end up staying for months. The town is made up predominantly of cafes and restaurants all of which have a very relaxed atmosphere, and many of which have a variety of live music in the evening. There isn't much to do other than reading a book in a ... read more

Ricardo Fergosso Galbrini says: Ciao. What are you lot still doing here? You must be bored if you still keep coming back for more of what basically is a long extended holiday slide show!! Anyway here's a brief glimpse we've been doing. 1. Meeting up with family and friends which was really lush. 2. Frolicing, bumming (not literally!) and mooning (full!) on beaches with the aid of Big Changs 3. Laughing in the face (well from a safe distance) of deadly snakes and tigers. 4. Learning to cook thai food. 5. Celebrating my native Italia winning the World Cup!!!! Lets have a look at the photographic evidence! We are leaving North Thailand now for Laos. Arrivederche. Ricardo PS Thaks for all your coments on previous journal as it is called here! We love getting them and ... read more

Daniel has a small tobacco tin that he carries around Auckland with him. It has a painted blue background with a little figure on it and the words that read 'Pai is Beautiful'. He's found it serves as a useful converstaion piece at the busy backpackers where he works, drawing comments such as 'oh, so you've been to Pai...' or 'so who is this Pai chick anyways?' A great way to meet people he tells me. Although I've been to Pai before, in fact, because I've been to Pai before, I wanted to return. I was there at Christmas time when the days are hot and nights are freezing and the morning is covered in mist. I only had one clear day this time but the thunder and lightening and monsoon rain was beautiful just the ... read more

Hey dudes! It's been a while since I last updated this, but I've been living in a monastery on the side of a mountain for a week, so I figure that's a decent enough excuse... Wat Thaton is a 9 level Buddhist Monastery scattered up the side of a mountain behind the thiny northern town of Thaton, basically right on the Thai-Burma border. It's a tiny little out-of-the-way place that most people don't bother going to unless they're just passing through en-route to the border for a visa run. Interaction with the outside world is seriously cut off, especially when you live in the monastery, but it was definitely a kick ass experience. The style of meditation taught at the Wat is called "Dynamic Vipassana" and essentially uses various movements of the body to focus the ... read more

Paatin aamulla etten lahdekaan Burman suuntaan vaan osittain takaisinpain, Pain vuoristokaupunkiin. Paatokseen vaikutti lahinna se, etta tajusin Thaimaan 30 paivan viisumin vetelevan viimeisiaan. 20.7 taytyy joko lahtea muualle jatkamaan tai tehda Burman/Laosin rajalle ns visa run, eli matkustaa sinne ja kayda leimaamassa passiin uudet leimat. En ole vila varma mita teen, olen viihtynyt taalla pohjoisessa todella hyvin ja harkitsin jopa Australian lentojen siirtamista parilla viikolla, mulla on sellainen lippu jolla lentojen paivamaaria voi muuttaa ilman erillista maksua. Toisaalta jos pidan nuo paivamaarat olisi jarkevaa alkaa jarjestella siirtoa etelaa kohti, no kohtapa se nahdaan.. Lahdin tosiaan aamulla tata Paita kohti, saa oli nyt paljon suosiollisempi, matkalla ei sattunut juuri ainoatakaan sadekuuroa, olin puolimatkassa jo kahden vaiheilla kaantyako Chiang Maita kohden vai yri... read more
