8/7/06 - 12/7/06 More amazing scenery and winding roads led us to the small town of Pai, nestled amongst rolling green forest covered hills. The journey had one notable event whereby the main road suddenly stopped in front of us. When I say main road, I mean a two lane stretch of road, very new and very straight. Obviously the 2 sides didn’t yet meet in the middle, as with a handful of sudden warning signs. It suddenly became a dead end. A small length of mud track of to the side then led round a mound of earth a few hundred meters long and back onto the main road the other side! Finally we found the turn off to Pai - merely another 98 Km. The road climbed and climbed with stunning views of a ... read more

Pai, a beautiful little town set against the back drop of pristine lush mountains, rushing streams and a people that are all smiles. Nowhere in Thailand have we been where the climate is so favourable, the food so cheap, the accomadation cheaper and the views stretch on forever. Pai is one of Thailands jewels, and lucky for us, the town suits us just fine. Whilst we have been here we have taken to motor bikes, as it is a much easier way to get around town and the surrounding hillside. Pai is also close to Burma, so this gives us a small taste of what we would expect if we were to ever visit the place. Please remeber the photos will not capture Pai, not even close.... read more

So I'm back in Thailand... I got into Bangkok and onto Kao San Road at 2am after our flight from Hanoi and as soon as I stepped onto that road and walked past dozens of wasted backpackers I knew I had to get out of there ASAP. Unfortunately I woke up the next morning with a raging flu so I had to spend a couple of days there before i had the energy for a bus ride. The bus ride was another overnighter and it wasn't pleasant as always... I thought I'd rough it by not taking gravol. Bad idea. I probably sound like a junkie, but I really need it to sleep. It's too bumpy and jerky to try and do it the natural way. Anyways I arrived in Chiang Mai and liked it more ... read more

After I came back from the Trek I spent a few more nights in Chaing Mai resting up and trying to get over a bit of a cold I had picked up. For my last night in Chaing Mai I met up with my two dutch friends from the Trek and their Thai friend Phang (whom I am convince is a lady boy). Phang took us out to a true Thai disco club called Warm Up, and the Dutch and I where pretty much the only none Thia people in the whole place. It was actually a lot more fun then most of the other pubs or bars I have been to. The Thai at this club had this obsession with giving each other a cheers and clanging glasses. Honestly it's ridiculous I think I probably ... read more

After a sixty minute flight with plenty of turbulence to give all on board a case of the willies, it was touchdown Thailand as we arrived back in the country where our adventures began. We had been away from the country for two months and after initial problems in Cambodia when we nearly turned back, we felt almost disappointed to be leaving Laos. During our travels through Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos it was apparent all along the way how much benefit we were getting though the dollar's lack of power. It meant we had spent absolutely nothing in the last couple of months compared to Thailand where the Baht holds well, and even with our eccentric splash out on an air ticket, our budget was not significantly dented. At arrivals we met a chef from Melbourne, ... read more

I decided to head to Pai, a small artist village west of Chiang Mai and chill out for awhile. I had heard it was very laid back and indeed it is. The village of about 3000 people sits along the Pai River. I arrived on a minibus and proceeded to walk the entire town in about 5 minutes looking for a place to stay. I settled on a bamboo hut along the river. It's a simple little hut with a bed and mosquitoe net, and a partially open bathroom/shower and a covered front porch with pillows. I dropped my bags and set out to check out the town some more. As I turned and looked west the sky exploded with color, the sunset was amazing!! I crossed the river to the east side and headed up ... read more

Well ... after an epic 17 1/2 hour journey on the most uncomfortable ride to date we arrived in Chaing Mai at 7.15 am feeling surprisingly rested. First impressions were good - we were met by a really smiley Thai lady who explained exactly what was going on - quite novel really! One thing that was immediately obvious was the drop in temperature - the first time since Cape Town that we've needed extra clothing. We got to Nice Place One which is where we ended up staying for our time in Chaig Mai ... and it had hot water! By 9 am we had had two cuppas, sussed out what we needed to do about our Laos visas, and had booked a 3 day hill tribe trek to Pai - excellent work! We missioned around ... read more

Hello readers, From Chiang Mai I hopped on a mini-bus to make the 3 hour journey north to Pai. The journey itself was on a long & winding road, with a bus crammed to full capacity without ANY air conditioning (thanks Aya travel... it was a joy to travel with you). I have to say however that the tortuous ordeal was worth it. Pai is such a beautiful, fun place. The town is in a wide valley floor next to a meandering river, and surrounded by lush, green hills & mountains. Today I braved a moped again (with passenger!!) to travel about 8 km out of town to the National Park and the hot springs therein. Words or pictures cannot do justice to the beautiful surroundings, so I won't bother trying. If you're that interested, get ... read more

I left Chiang Mai, there was just nothing left to do there....apart from thai boxing but I'll go back to try that out in a while. Songkran, the water festival, was the coolest thing I've ever seen happen in the streets anywhere. The first official day of the holiday, I took a cruise around the inner city moat (nothing like a moat full of water for the festival) in the back of a pickup truck. I went with the lady (who I found out is a ladyboy) that ran the guesthouse, a bunch of her friends, a dude from california and a german woman. The truck was packed and everyone was drinking whiskey and dancing. It was absolutely nuts. There were thousands of vehicles jammed in the streets around the moat and people running all over. ... read more

Had an unreal 2 days and 2 nights in the quaint liottle mtn village of Pai, NW Thailand. we hooked up with "the 2 Geezers", Mark and Dean, from our cooking course in Chiang Mai and took the longest 135km journey...4.5hrs!! Stayed at a primo little place called Ban Thai Village, hired scooters (where would we be without our trusty scooters??) and searched the area. Went to wats, natural hot springs, water falls with crazy locals skimming down rock slides, markets and chilled at many a great restaurant. You can be rest assured that anywhere in Thailand you will never be far from: 1) Internet, over seacall (good ol engrish), disc you burn (engrish) 2) Travel agent (special deals......) 3) Laundry (everyone wants to do your washing...) 4) Moto bikes rentals 5) Taxi, taxi, taxi!!!... read more
