The others hired some mopeds and went out for the day. I dint as they scare me too much, having a dodgy helmet, no protection going over 40kph isnt my ides of fun! I went and cilled out by a swimming pool all day. It was really hot and manged to faint 3 times! Met the others in the evening and we went for a wonder in Pai. Its a very hippy town so i had my tarot cards read by a hippy dude which was fun. ... read more

From Chang Mai we took a small minibus journey to Pai which is in the northwest of Thailand. We're still travelling with Alice, Glynn, Rachel, Pete and Jenny. Found a ok guesthouse on the riverside and its been really good to be in a large group. All the rooms have nice balconies on so we can chill together on the nights. First day we got some scooters together so we could go out into the beautiful countryside around us and see some of the sights. I have never rode a scooter before so I was a little nervous, but once I knew what I was doing and the gears were ok, its no harder than riding my pushbike. Although I would say to all wannabee 125cc Valentino Rossi's, don't start in first gear, its got a ... read more

Having such a nice time in Pai, Stayed here 4 nights i think now! been on little adventures...got stuck in some mud and covered in it on our way to a hot spring...we had to turn back after a while it was so bad! Yesturday we went to on a little wander and ended up at an elephant camp and we went for an hours ride...getting on the elephant sam fell back on me and we almost fell off which was like 10 ft high....it was nice and a great photo opportunity but the way this elephant had been cared for was awful, it was directed by a pick axe shoved into its neck and when we walked past a tree it ate anything in sight so i think it wasnt fed very well! It is ... read more

Arrived safely in Pai this afternoon, it is very quiet here...a shock from staying only in cities! nice change though! only 4 hour bus ride which isn't too bad compared to 13 hours! we checked in and paid 200 baht for a shack with a metal tin roof and it had ants covering the bathroom....i know we're meant to be roughing it but there's no way i am staying somewhere, where i couldn't dare move or close my eyes...so i am staying a snob where cleaniness is concerned!! Walked around Pai this evening and really just chilling out!!! We have booked into and moved our stuff to a lovely guest room, which is only 300 baht a night which is roughly 4 pounds 50 pence so abit expensive but clean and tidy :) Going to explore ... read more

Holy crap my month of Muay Thai has come to a close. I gotta say, I really wasn't ready to leave the camp but my tourist visa expires in a week anyways. The last week of training was definately the best. I stepped it up a notch and even started doing the long runs in the morning. The 10 km run takes me a bit over an hour and after the morning of training I slept about 5 hours until training in the afternoon. Then my favorite run in the afternoon was a nice 4 km up some hills past a waterfall. All I can really say is that my fitnes level definately increased and I could feel good about that. As far as my Muay Thai skills, they were improving but still quite pathetic. It ... read more

Well I know I have been putting off getting another blog up for too long. Sometimes you just get caught up in relaxing. Since my last blog I have done so much traveling, and it's only the beginning of more. I left my brother at the Muay Thai training camp and went to Southern Thailand to Ko Pha Ngan. It is fair sized island with TONS of people (tourists and locals). It is about a two day journey between buses, taxis, ferries, and trains. For the first time in a long time I was actually begging for a airplane! I took the journey with another Canadian, an American, and an English guy. We stayed beach side on a resort with no action. I learned now to never book accomodations through travel agents. Even though our resort ... read more

The vision of bare back elephant riding through unspoilt countryside without any German package tourists within 100 miles was starting to seem a distant dream after our brief elephant experience in Chiang Mai. But after reading a tiny paragraph in some new Thai guide-book we have picked up my hopes were re-ignited!!! "Find Pai elephant Tours office in Pai, ask for Khum Thom and you're away!!!" So we did, although the fiver price tag didn't involve any transport to and from the elephant camp as coach tours tend not to exist this far north in Thailand, but as we had very dodgy mountain bikes hired for a couple of days we were assured by Khum that these would get us to our destination. " 6 Kirometer.......very easy for you!!!!" she said! so off we pedalled in ... read more

I had high hopes for Pai and as soon as we arrived (after a 4 hour roller coaster of a bus ride) I wasn't disappointed. It is labelled as some sort of hippy commune with very little Thai influence, but that couldn't be further from the truth!! OK the majority of people here are backpackers who aren't Thai but the place still feels like a million miles from home as Brits, Australians, Israelies, Italians and Germans (yes they get here as well) etc all just relax after busy cities or take stock after exhausting travels through neighbouring countries (Laos, Burma and China). The scenery is amazing and the first thing I notice is how quiet the place is!!....with no tuk tuks, or taxis, just the sound of insects and the fast flowing river that edges the ... read more
