We were up bright and early this morning ready to set off trekking. We left our main rucksacks in the hotel and boarded a converted pick-up truck. When I say converted i mean they have fashioned a metal roof over the back part and put two bench seats in it. With 12 of us sqashed in we though we were just being taken to a bigger bus, no, not to be, the full three hour journey was made in this little tin heap. We stopped at the police station and they checked everyone who was going, just to make sure we all return alive i guess. The journey was broken by a trip to the market to get the food we need for the next three days. Some of the hills we went up were so ... read more

Nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains 135 km from Chiang Mai, Pai (pronounced "by") is the hippy mecca of the whole of South-East Asia. We have been staying in a round bamboo hut on stilts on the banks of the Pai River, with a hammock on the balcony and nothing but a mattress on the floor inside. The pace of life is slow and relaxed, with everyone incapable of much more than mooching. It is easy to see why people end up staying weeks, and even months, here. We had only intended to stop here to break the bone rattling 9 hour bus ride from CM to Mae Hong Son but have already stayed 3 nights and feel like we could stay a few more days. The town itself can be walked in a matter ... read more

After our third day in the Chiang Mai area, we decided to book a van to the town of Pai up in the mountains to the north. We figured it would be better to do some trekking there. Perhaps it was just a little bit, more remote than Chiang Mai and maybe we would have a more authentic trekking experience. The scenery on route was certainly spectacular, but the mountain passes were at times frightening. It was barely a highway; often the van driver played chicken with on-coming traffic on what was a very narrow, winding road. The drop offs to each side were sometimes thousands of feet. One could never really see what was coming around the bend. Along the way, the driver stopped at a local roadside cafe for a lunch break. Many dishes ... read more

http://thailand.sawadee.com/index.html This link will give you an idea where we were at. We were at Mae Hong Son (#45) On Dec 25, we left Mae Hong Son to go to Soppong (also called Pang Ma Pha). http://thailand.sawadee.com/maehongson/map.htm This map shows Mae Hong Son, Pang Ma Pha & Pai. It took 2 hours on the public bus. There is a cave called Lod Cave, which is supposed to be quite interesting. We arrived in Soppong at 12:30 pm, but all the guesthouses were full. It was also raining. So, we decided to take the next bus and go onto Pai. After an hour away from Soppong, there is a stretch of road construction for about 2 KM. The bus driver asked all of us to get off the bus, as the road is muddy and slippery. It ... read more

4 Nights Oh Pai, why were you so good to us? If you are ever in Chaing Mai you must see Pai. The guidebook said this hippy town sprouted like a mushroom when travellers were on there way to somewhere and they found Pai. We took the latest bus (always arranging things at the last minute) on a Saturday at 3pm (asking for trouble) and when we arrived at 7pm we were greeted with a town abuzz with Thai and Farang tourists everywhere. I was a little disappointed as I had the impression that Pai was a 300 metre street with 5 or so guesthouses (so naive) and that we may come across a few other travellers why we were there, how wrong was I. Our champion mini van driver drove us to atleast 10 guesthouses ... read more

After spending my first two weeks in Ko Pha Ngan I decided to go with Kunge to Pai in Northern Thailand for his holidays. We had aimed to catch the sleeper train to Bangkok but because of the floods in the south of Thailand we ended up flying (Aaggghhh - spending a bit too much money). We spent a couple of days in Bangkok which has to be one of the maddest cities. The roads are just plain crazy, people seem to drive where they like, when they like. I've been told you need to think of it as water in a river - if there is a space you naturally fall in to it. That maybe, but when you're on the back of a scooter taxi for the first time, its pretty scary. We stayed ... read more

Leichte Schwellung, Schmerzen, unklare Krepitation (Knoc... read more

Firstly thankyou for all the comments people have sent especially the ones from people we dont know - maybe the badger on our front page enticed you. If so you have our full respect. Anyway, although when in Chaing Mai I was happy as larry (mainly to be out of busy Bangkok) and fully endorsing my life of massage and hedonism - it's all changed again. I've now found an even better place that rivals palolem for looking and feeling like paradise. Pai (pronounced 'Bye' unless you're us - then it's Pie) is located right in the northwest tip of thailand - pretty close to the border, and officially has some of the most amazing scenery ever. rolling hills full of thick lush greenery (way too many colours of green for me to understand), little thai ... read more

Leaving Chiang Mai, we headed into the mountains to a small village called Pai. Having two travel choices, a public government bus which is basically an old school bus, or spend a bit more and ride in an air conditioned minivan; much more comfortable, plus the minivan will pick you up at your hotel. It was 3 hours of 2 lane, winding mountain roads with great scenery. Once we started to climb, the AC couldn’t be used because they needed the power for going up the hills. Pai is a small town/village which is a popular spot for mountain trekking, hiking, elephant safaris and such. It has a “laid-back” attitude and consists of a younger, hippie crowd. Lots of small restaurants, guest houses ($5 per night), motorcycle rental shops and travel/trekking agencies, surrounded by rice paddies, ... read more

We arrived in Chaing Mai in the early morning having taken the overnight but from Bangkok. We spend only a few hours in the town before deciding to head further north to the viallage of Pai. We caught a rickshaw to the bus station and caught the local bus to Pai. Four hours later and a bit sore from the bumpy, twisty ride, we arrived in Pai to find a small town and the sun shining. We found a place to stay quickly (Blue Lagoon Hotel) and immediately ventured out to get someting to eat. It wasn't long until we found out that this sleepy town was ravaged weeks ago by a massive overflow from the river that runs through town. Most of the riverside huts and restaurants were wiped out. The next day we rented ... read more
