I spent the day on another tour where again we stopped at a village on the way to the temple where there of course were many shops! This village in particular though was interesting in that it is one of the few villages that still grows opium (besides extremely rural villages) but they cannot sell it...also it is the first village I have seen with electricity and TV. It was relatively close to Chaing Mai so that may explain it. We were brought to one of the most visited temples around Chaing Mai, the Doi Suthep Temple and although the temple itself was beautiful I found it quite sad. To see hundreds of people literally bowing down and chanting infront of these various statues or "gods" was sad...there seemed to be a god for everything, one ... read more

Well I found myself up nice and early, sat on a bus for a total of almost eight hours and visited two countries so I think it was a productive day! I did a tour today out to the Golden Triangle which I found quite interesting. It was cool to stand on top of a hill on Thailand soil and across the river you could see Laos and Burma...We were able to cross the border and spend an hour in both Laos and Mynamar wich I did along with a few others and although we didn't see much (just the markets), I can at least say I was there! On the way to the Triangle we stopped at a couple of villages which to be honest I was not too impressed with. Basically the stops were ... read more

Well I've arrived in Chaing Mai and already I like it better than Bangkok. Chaing Mai is in located in Northern Thailand and is a lot smaller than Bangkok (and the air is cleaner!). I took the overnight train here from Bangkok and was surprised with how nice it was, I was in second class so I had a fan and a bed which was great! I had some fun (or stress really) before even leaving Bangkok. I had handed my ticket to a steward (?) who showed me to my seat, unfortunately he had forgotten to give the ticket back so...when another man came around (looked like a transit officer) to collect the tickets I didn't have it! I tried to explain this to him but he didn't understand at all what I was saying...eventually ... read more

We arrived by train from Bangkok at 6 am Sunday morning. This was the moment of truth to see if Benny and Kris were really "taken" on their tuk tuk ride in Bangkok. Auspiciously enough, a driver from the Winner Hotel (the accomodations Kris and Benny arranged) was there to pick us up and take us to our new headquarters. We couldn't check in as it was still early so we headed out in search of the Chiang Mai branch chapel. This is when auspiciousness became miraculous. We had prayed earlier to be able to find the church, but couldn't find it listed in any directories or on any maps. We asked several locals and no one knew where the church was. A little downhearted, we walked toward the TAT (Tourist Authority of Thailand) and along ... read more

Well, after a good rest and some planning we were ready to have some real excitement in Chaing Mai. We got up early and went out to the crazy streets to find a ride to up to the jungle mountain temple Doi Sutep. We found a red truck which had a covered back and two benches going down the side of the back and were albe to rent it and a drive for the morning for a little under $4, what a deal. Oh yeah we did have to share the back with a few bags of garlic and other vegetables, but still $4 for all morning, I am pretty sure we are some of the best barters in the world or at least after our experiences in Bangkok we have become some of the best ... read more

The Thai New Year, or "Songkran" festival, is the largest water fight on the planet. However, it is much more than that to the Thai people. Here are the events of the Thai new year that my Thai wife, my friends and I enjoy each year. The dates are April 13-15 every year. Songkran, or the Thai New Year, is still the most important of all the Thai festivals and holidays. My Thai wife and I usually have loads of friends from other countries to our home and we love to have them participate in all the traditional activities with us. Although we are not Buddhists we love to go to the temples to watch the activities, eat, drink, throw water and just have fun. Each year, the four-day celebration of Songkran consists of many activities, ... read more

NEW ADDITIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today we still had about half the day to actually look around the city itself before we had to head to the train station to go to Bangkok. Pretty much in Chiang Mai there are two important temples and a museum that one has to visit. But there are also really cute little temples and I like the house architecture there in general also. So it was nice to walk around. It is hot here but somehow it is a different heat than in the other places we have been. You are hot, but you dont feel like there is no way you can take another step. A much more pleasant hot. So we walked around and looked at the two important temples which were very nice and very different. One of them was ... read more

Chiang Mai is my favorite city in Thailand. We got here yesterday after 6 hours on the bus which included the lovely entertainment of a 2 hour loud Thai movie which kept us well awake. After taking a tuk tuk from the bus station we were told that the guest house we wanted to go to was full, which has never happened to us before. Good thing is that the next guest house was about 50 meters down the road and we settled in there. We also booked us a tour for the next day for a day of hiking, elephant riding and bamboo rafting for about 700B - 15 euros. But after that we went shopping. this is the first activity in chiang Mai that everyone does, goes to the night bazaar or somewhere else ... read more

It's pretty warm here (Chang Mai) but the first couple of evenings in Bangkok were chilly which lowered me in gently! Think I've adjusted quite well! The last few days outdoors have improved my colour slightly... looking forward to some time on the beach! I'm kinda looking forward to occupying myself for a while, maybe a diving course etc. I can use Sally (James' sis) as a base and hopefully it won't be too long til I meet my lover again! For the past 3 days, Nat, I and 8 boys have been on a Trek in Chang Mai. Kat chose not to hike for hours in a vertical direction, but took her own lil trip to Nan. The trek was amazing, about 4hrs walking up steep mountain paths on the 1st day... elephant ride was ... read more

Hey everyone, how is life treating you?! Life is fantastic over here, just went to dinner with my cousin and my aunt, and it cost us 200 baht (nearly $7) for 3 meals and 3 beers. We spent the day on a tour, first we went to the butterfly and orchid farm, a little boring because I'm not really into the flowers. From there we went to an elephant dung recycling factory. Yep, you read right. They recycle elephant dung into paper and use it all across the world. That lovely handmade paper you're using might actually be made from elephant dung... Then we went up into the Thai mountains, to visit the hill tribes. We visited the 'long neck' tribe and the 'big ear' tribes. You've probably seen pictures of them... Extremely interesting, they roll ... read more
