Hello again! Not alot of time to write anything as we are off to the Chang Mai Zoo to check out the Pandas. Spent the last two days on a Hillside trek, pretty cool, but also pretty exhausting. Saw our first huge cockroach last night in the bathroom and made the huge mistake of showing it to Serena. Not alot of sleep last night to say the least!!!!!!! So, hopefully these pics worked and we'll post again once we get to Phuket tomorrow.... read more

If you are completely unoriginal you do two things in Chiang Mai; northern Thailand's gorgeous capital, go on a Trek to the mountains and hill tribes and take a cooking class. Upon checking into our guest house, we set off on a fat man's quest on the Sunday 'walking fair' Chiang Mai's equivalent of Walmart outdoors, low low prices and stuff you really don't need. But the 'food court' kicks ass, Jon and I set off on a mission, see how far 10 dollars will get us on food we mostly haven't tried. Turns out 10 bucks is more than enough to give two guys enormous stomach aches. Meat on Stick, Spicy fish ball soup, Sam tom twice, noodle spring rolls, fried corn donut things, fried chicken and ?, mushroom eggs cooked in banana leaf and ... read more

Hello all! Well, for those of you that read Chris "Iceman" McEwen's posts, you may be disappointed by mine. We have had our own unique Thailand experiences already, but nothing like the bad luck that guy has had. Hope you made it home alright buddy, we'll catch up to you in a few weeks. And thanks for the help the first few days.........you should see this guy......he runs this place. Anyways, on to our stories. When we first got off the plane after our 24hr trip, the heat and pollution were totally overwhelming. I have never felt anything quite like this, it is hard to breath and makes your eyes burn. Bangkok is absolute chaos and can only be handled for so long. We met up with Ice and April right off the plane at a ... read more

Bangkok. Wow what a place ! What can I say that hasn’t already been written ? Well for a start I can say that the stories of being scammed and ripped off are true… that is if you are a stupid tourist with not an once of common sense or like a couple of people I have met, a stupid gap year student who lands in Bangkok on the way to Australia without the first clue about what to expect. If however you have a little bit of savvy you’ll find Bangkok a great place with lots to do and see and light-years away from the seedy, dodgy image that is sometimes projected by these fools. Right enough of my rantings on stupid people and back to my own travels… In Bangkok I did all of ... read more

having lost all track of time, i asked someone the other day what the date was, and realized that i've been on the road now for nearly three months. shocking, really, given that it only feels like last week or so that i was cruising down 101 in my mullet wig groovin out to 'open arms,' and that i still wake up just about every morning (or afternoon, as the case may be) all giddy with anticipation as to what the day will bring. i often catch myself walking along unwittingly with a crooked shit-eating grin on my face like a downs-afflicted hindu cow. of course, not every day has actually turned out to be filled with wonder and excitement, but it seems enough for me that there at least be the potential for it. my ... read more

Olifant rijden!!!! Ik (we? :-) ) houd mijn hart vast!!!!!!!!!!! ... read more

Sawadi Kaaaaaa!! Hey hey, it's that time again!! The past week, for those of you who didn't know, has been Songkran (well officially 3 days, unless you're in the Songkran capital) - the Thai new year. Thailand is now 2548 years old!! I came from Kanchanaburi to get up here before the transport rush, accomodation price rise, etc. and bumped into Kate, who I'd met in Kanchanburi... which occupied a couple of evenings!! I filled a few more days with a 3-day thai massage course! It was exhausting, all that learning, but any offers to be a practise body are welcome!! On Sunday, I was on the way back to my guest house, on the back of a bike (brother of the massage teacher), and the water festival was apparently beginning! Oscar (Hos) took me out ... read more

Chang Mai and the Thai New Year celebration After a really enjoyable time in Bangkok, I decided to head up north to a city called Change Mai. Change Mai is known for its trekking to remote Thai villages, elephant rides, cooking classes, and other things of that sort. But my main reason for going was to celebrate the Thai New Year; which is also known as Songkran. Songkran is a Thai word which means "move" or "change place" as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as people believe that water will wash away bad luck So basically what ends up happening is a HUGE CITY WIDE WATER FIGHT. And man, it sure is fun….or a day or two….when you are ready ... read more

In some ways I feel as though I have not done a whole lot here in Chaing Mai but it seems like I have been busy. I leave tonight to head down south to meet up with Sue and I am so excited. I am ready to have a travel partner...and to be honest I am tired of the water throwing here! The "Songkran Festival" is the Thai's New Year's but the celebrations go from April 12-15th in Chaing Mai and it's crazy. Basically it becomes a big waterfight which starts in the morning and doesn't end until early evening. The waterfight has evolved over the years, initially people would sprinkle you with water as a sign of wishing you blessings for the new year, not throwing buckets of water on you. To be honest, the ... read more
