Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping...in Chiang Mai. We have been in this quaint town of northern thailand for a few days and are loving it. We've met a plethora of fellow travellers along with friendly locals. It's a friendly little place where you can walk to wherever you need to go...and everything is dirt cheap! Our guesthouse is less than US$2 per night...a great meal is rarely more than $1. Graham and I have taken a Thai cooking course, where we prepared and packed away 5 full meals in 5 hours; needless to say, it was a satisfying course. We also plan on mountain biking and trekking in the area: including elephant riding, bamboo rafting, rock climbing, and staying with the local villagers. We'll be calling this city home for an undecided amount of time...then ... read more

Cooking in Chiang Mai Tom Yum, Green Curry, Pad Thai Banana Cake too! Today we have a "free day" in Chiang Mai. So I opted to join in on the Thai Cooking class that was offered. We were picked up in the morning and brought to the market for a quick look to see some of the ingredients needed for the dishes we would be making. Then it was off to the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery school where we each had a workstation and had a hands on cooking experience. First we made Tom Yum soup. Most people went a little overboard with the chilis and made their soups a little hot. I stuck to the allotted five chili's and didn't chop them up too much! Hello! If you don't like spicy food why would you ... read more

Arrival: Chiang Mai Doi Suthep. Three hundred steps. Uphill trek worth it. Once again another short entry that I will no doubt fill in the details once I get to Bangkok. This morning was spent biking around the villages and farms. We saw a lot of different crops like baby corn, tobacco, various fruits and mushrooms. Then it was back to the Village Guesthouse for a scrumptious lunch and a blessing from a Buddhist guy before we headed off for Chiang Mai where I'll be today and tomorrow. This evenings plan will be to check out the Doi Suthep Temple around sunset and then the infamous Chiang Mai Night Market. I foresee myself sending off another package or two home! lol More in a few days. Love and stuff, Bonz Well, we made it to Doi ... read more

Just a quick entry for today. Wanted to get in the haiku before I lost them all. lol Elephant riding High up. Jiggy Joggy fun! Giddy up baby! Had an awesome time just outside Chiang Mai with the elephants today. We started off our morning with a ride out to the Elephant Conservation Centre. We watched them bathe the elephants in a nearby lake. So basically the trainers and there were also some Western volunteers, that were riding the elephants "bareback" (or in other words on the elephants shoulders) right into the water. The elephants seemed to be having fun squirting water at us onlookers and getting a scrub at the same time. I don't think that I'd be able to go out there for fear of falling into the water! But it did make for ... read more

Hi again! Today I am in Chiang- Mai in northern Thailand. I arrived yesterday morning, early, after an excrutiatingly long 13hrs on the train from Lopburi (correct spelling, and not Lumpuri as I wrote before, haha!). I left Auytthaya on Tuesday evening, and got on what can only be described as a somewhat chaotic bus! I think it might have been a school bus, because it went to far off villages and dropped off young kids in school uniforms. It was quite an experience sitting on the bus for 2.5hrs (normally only one hour, but as I said, I think it took a couple of detours!), no aircon, torn up seats and the door on the side of the bus wide open. I used to think London buses were dangerous, but compared to local buses in ... read more

The sleeper train got us into Chiang Mai early on tuesday morning. We pulled into the station alongside the orient express. After avoiding crowds of accomodation touts we managed to reach a telephone and arrange for Peter (from the Chiang Mai youth hostel) to come and pick us up. Chiang Mai is Thailand's 2nd city, although with a population of c116,000 it is more like a town compared to the chaos of Bangkok. At the centre of the city is the C13th walled old town, with an intact moat and numerous temples. We visited only a couple in the heat: Wat Chedi Luang - with the ruins of a C15th 85m Chedi (which once housed the "emerald Bhudda" we saw in Bangkok). Wat Phra Sing - the most important Wat complex in the city and most ... read more

Hi Guys, Yesterday was an important day for me - the day I fell in love with Thailand. Up until yesterday i was somewhat missing Vietnam. Then I went on a mammoth day of sightseeing which took me to the golden triangle, a brief boat ride over to Laos, and up to see the long neck and MaeSai tribes. After some initial well founded skepticism (my bus was late (even by Thai time) and a seriously overweight / smelly French man with his pro was squeezed into the packed mini-van).... the day surprised me. First we visited what is allegedly the most significant temple in Thailand - here I must mention that you get over temples quickly.... there is one on practically every corner. What keeps them interesting is trying to get a good photo of ... read more

Hi guys Hope all is well for you. Thought id touch base, let you know i am alive and well. Finally have made some plans.... Thought it would be good to go home with some skills so i am going to learn Thai cooking tomorrow, the following day im going to the golden triangle, seeing hot springs and having a look at the hill tribe villages, day after that im learning THAI MASSAGE, next day riding some elephants and then down south to the island. Woo hoo! The north has improved since finding a bar which isn't visited by dirty old western men with thai girls or lady boys. Seen more of it here in Chiang Mai than in BKK. Odd. Anyhow this place is quite nice, have made a friend and changed hostel to a ... read more

I recently got back from a trek into the hills surrounding Chaing Mai. It was a 3-day, 2 night adventure. It was a lot of fun! The whole group really bonded together, and we had a great time! It was a bit wierd in that I was the oldest person on the tour. I suppose as I get on in years, that experience will happen more and more. In any case, I'll get a full description of the events soon. For now, I'll just upload some photos. ... read more

The train ride up here was brilliant (although the squat toilet wasn't much fun) and we got our passports back today! Woo hoo! Have been trekking in the hills today and rode an elephant! Also went bamboo rafting and visited the Karen tribe. None of you would believe me if I told you the place we are staying in has a hole in the window, bare wires hanging above the shower, holes in the sheets and the lock is broken so we have to padlock the front door. I am almost getting used to it! Karl has already bumped into some guys from work proving the "small world" theory. Really looking forward to tomorrow's Thai cookery course with their TV chef. Promise to cook for you all when I get back. Emma x... read more
