We left Chiang Mai for a day and a night, but the lure of the Night Bazaar brought us back for one last visit. One new set of t-shirts and trousers later (for Claire and I- we are trying to instil in the children the meaning of austerity and so they are wearing rags and eating from dustbins) and we have booked ourselves on the night train to Bangkok. First class, too, as it was all they had left, and believe it or not, time is running out for us in the Land of Smiles. (I must add a note here- Claire and I are travelling first class, as Mia and Jake have yet to contribute financially in any way, we have reserved them a crate on the roof). We ventured further north for a night ... read more

It's true. It is. It's also very big. We stayed in a very nice hotel (way beyond anything we are likely to be staying in again), with a balcony overlooking the river and a TV. Which we never watched. Our days in Bangkok were spent acclimatising and adjusting to the heat, which we all (Jake and Mia included) seemed to do pretty well. Found a fantastic Children's Museum up near Chatuchak weekend market which filled a day nicely. Also allowed us to use the skytrain. And the river boat. On arrival in Bangkok (after a stress-free flight, it has to be said, despite BA's attempts to ensure we got off to the worst start possible by not giving us any food), we discovered that Chiang Mai and areas north were suffering from the worst floods in ... read more

I woke up at 8am psyched to play some paintball with the boys. Unfortunately it was too far and time was too short. So instead I checked out of my place, said goodbye to the guys, and purchased my ticket back to Barcelona. For breakfast I had a delicious open-faced bagel with eggs and salad on top, complete with a refreshing mango lassi. Then I got a nice Thai massage and passed out as knees were placed into various joints and spots in my back. At 12:15pm I caught a tuk-tuk to the airport and arrived with plenty of time. I killed time in the airport by eating a delicious chicken curry and following it up with a nice Black Canyon coffee. I sat reading in the gate until somebody came and grabbed me to board ... read more

We pulled into Chang Mai around 8:30am and I caught a tuk tuk into the city center with the boys. We walked up a main street and turned down a street where we found a simple place called Midtown Guest House. I took my own room and then headed out to do some errands. After checking out a used bookshop and hitting an internet café to write Yannis, I sat down and ate a relaxing breakfast of Pad Thai. Then I returned to the Internet Cafe for an hour or so of sending out various emails. The friendly guy behind the desk agreed to copy my CD’s for me so I headed out for STA Travel to book my tickets to Myanmar and back to Barcelona. On the way I met a few gorgeous French girls ... read more

For my first trip to Laos, I decided to join a group tour. While I always prefer traveling alone, as I want to explore a new place at my own pace (plus I need a lot of “quiet time” meditating, thinking and writing and just sitting still), this one time that I know that I need to be with a group as I know I can’t deal with Laos on my own. My biggest problem is the language barrier. English isn’t widely-spoken in Laos and it will thus be difficult for me go around this country given such handicap. I also don’t want to waste my time getting lost in a new city or queuing for bus tickets. So I signed up for the Laos Unplugged tour organized by the Melbourne-based Intepid Travel. The 11-day ... read more

Hullo Again!! After heading back to Bangkok for a few days we caught a bus to Chiang Mai, which was a harrowing 12.5 hours on a bus!..Quite the experience!! Chiang Mai is very beautiful..alot smalleer than bangkok, alot more spread out but a noticeable difference in culture. Markets places everywhere, lovely little resturants with ferneries..the atmosphere completely different. The first day was a recovery day from travels but later went out for tea for some traditional pizza!!..not bad, but not as good as my favourite barbeque chicken!! The following day was spent being chauffered driven by Pi, via a tuk tuk. Not so good in peak our by one of these! We first went to visit the elephants, in time for their show. How amazing!..they played soccer with each other, painted, so many things..such friendly giants. ... read more

Hullo all, It appears that my last journal entry did not make it into the real world so will have another go!..The connections out here are some what different to what I am used to!..Currently in Luang Pubang which is governed by satelite..very good connection! After leaving Bangkok, we headed to Chiang Rai for a couple of days. This town was very beautiful, wide spread..after spending 12 hours on a bus all night!..we finally made it during the day of which I crashed big time! After recovery mode we jumped on a tuk tuk which took us through Chiang Mai to see some big factories and local tourist sites. We firtst started off at the Elephant village where we were amazed with the level of co-ordination the elephants produced. We sat on the benches whilst they ... read more

Well the boat trip ended up taking 3 days. For the first 2 it was 11 hrs on wooden benches on the boat and then the last was 7 hrs on a bus which killed us as we were assured it would only take 3 hrs!! We spent the first night in a tiny town called pakbeng which is on the banks of the river, loads of guesthouses but electricity goes off as its so remote. The 2nd day we didnt reach the border before it closed so we got stuck in houxaiy ( or something like that) whcih as pretty much the same. Anyway eventually we crossed the border which was just a river! And just stepping back in to thailand you can see how much more westernised it is. Quite a relief. Even the ... read more

...and the return to Chiang Mai Presently I am slightly frustrated...I thought I found the ultimate deal 20 baht (the Thai currency) for an hour of internet access. Sounds splendid, yet I cannot access my primary email account, thus I am unable to retrieve my password for my blog. So very tragic, but alas, if this is the worst of my problems...I could only hope that is the case. At the moment I am making use of the computer access to write my entry, and I will find another computer and add the entry later (at my swank hotel in Chiang Mai they charge 50 baht for 10 minutes which equates to a dollar twenty-five). More than you probably need or want to know.... Today was filled with splendid adventures...but perhaps I should begin where I ... read more

Hello, quick update. Arrived safe and sound. Very busy little place, full of activity. Bad news, full of travelers also. No plan planning is not so great, but does make things more adventourous. The guesthouse we thought to stay at was full, but we wandered around alleys and got another that was great, one stop and all. One bed, one mattress on the floor, one bathroom with toilet and shower as one.......okay fun story oh and one spider, and worst, only one night. It was great really called Awana sleep and eat. Funny. Great people great stories. Now at the TopNorth Guest house. Stinky, hot and mildewy the guy above us has a shower and it showers in our room. I love that....not. Saw the zoo, crazy story, but save it for more time. Not to ... read more
