Gezellige mensen, goede ligging, prima gedeelde kamer.

After a weekend of sightseeing in Ayuttaya of big Buddhas, Wats & monkeys, another week at the school begins. I'm so excited to get back to the children and see their smiling faces! Every morning they line up to sing the National Anthem at 8am (this happens in all public places) and every morning a boy and girl are chosen to raise the flag of Thailand to full mast. Then we all pray towards the temple and the day begins. I walk into the kindergarten to the familiar greeting of 12 kids running towards me and jumping up for a cuddle. Certainly no Monday morning blues! There is one little girl who always gets to me first, and does so by means of running at me so hard her head hits me right in the stomach ... read more

Valvoin taas yolla pari tuntia. Nukuin sitten puoli kahdeksaan asti. Lahdin kahdeksalta liikkeelle. Poljin ensin kauimpana olevaan kohteeseen eli Wat Phra Si Sarphnetiin. Sisaanpaasy maksoi 50 bahtia, eli runsaan euron. Etsin seuraavaksi norsupaikan. En nytkaan halunnut menna ratsastamaan norsulla, mutta otin niista valokuvia ja ostin myymalasta postikortteja. Paluumatkalla poikk... read more

Matkustin tanaan junalla Ayutthayan pikkukaupunkiin. Majapaikan varasin aamulla netissa varmuuden vuoksi. Illemmalla nakyi turist... read more

With a couple of days to kill before my little brother and beloved girlfriend arrive in Thailand I decided to hop on a train a couple of hours north to the ancient city of Ayutthaya. This city is the former ancient capital of Thailand and is home to some of the most important temple ruins outside of Cambodia. Unfortunately after Angkor Wat the ruins are a little 'after the lord mayors show' but there is still plenty to see there. After hiring a bike, getting loads of great photos, seeing tonnes of old temples I set off back to the guesthouse. Only to get spectacularly lost, end up cycling down thai motorways, over bridges, on to another island on the opposite side of the city. Now, my sense of direction is pretty poor, but I did ... read more

...certainly lived up to it's name as I arrived at Bangkok airport and was greeted by the smiliest woman I'd ever seen. Her smile grew even bigger as I waved in ackonwledgement of the ETC (educational travel centre) sign she was holding, as she nodded frantically "Welcome to Thailand!" I'm spending my first three weeks here voluteering in a village school - something I've wanted to do for a long time, and finally here, I'm excited about the challenge and doing something worthwhile rather than just lazing on a beach! (Plenty of time for that later!) The Thai lady tells me there's 6 of us in the volunteer group but no sooner than she says this her phone rings declaring two have cancelled - shame. So there are four of us; Myself and 3 x 20 ... read more

With busy schedules, the lack of a Christmas break, and some six-day work weeks, I have spent the last few months in, or within the immediate vicinity of, Nakhon Sawan. A four-day weekend for New Years, followed by a two day weekend for a holiday that slips my mind at the moment, provided a chance for Tara and I to get back on the road. In the process, we took in some incredible sights, delicious tastes and, as always, met some wonderful people. In early December, our friend Ryan had mentioned a trip to Chiang Mai, the mountainous city of the north which Tara and I have been waiting to visit since we arrived in Thailand. Chiang Mai is known for it's beautiful surroundings, a city which is large with many western-ammenities, yet still small enough ... read more

6th Jan ’12 Minibus from Cha Am to Bangkok, metro system to station, train to Ayutthaya After breakfast we checked out and hiked back up the main road with our backpacks to get to the minibus pick up point. The minibus started out in Hua Hin so by the time it got to us the only seats left were one right at the back which Howard took and one next to a man who took up 1 ½ seats which I got! The minibus was great actually comfy seats and air con, we stopped once for a toilet break and then the man and his wife swapped seats and I got more room. It turned out that the 4 other westerners on the bus were all pensioners from Sweden who live 4 months a year in ... read more

I’m baaaack! This blog is well overdue and I’m sorry for not keeping everyone updated. A lot has happened since I last wrote, but I’ll try and keep it to a mere short story rather than a novel. With regards to teaching, things got a little smoother as the semester progressed. Along with picking up A LOT more Thai, I started to not care so much that the students were being devils because there wasn’t much I could do about it. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in another blog, but I found out that the school I was at is literally one of the worst schools in Ayutthaya. All the students that don't get into the good schools go to Ayutthaya Nusorn (A tuk tuk driver asked where I taught and when I told ... read more
