I arrived in Ayutthaya about five thirty and wanted to take a tuk-tuk to the shopping centre as it was near most of the accommodation giving me a chance to look around before I decided, but because they wouldn't get commission for that from the guesthouses they all wanted to charge me three times more. In the end I was able to take a pick-up type truck bus a few minutes walk away. After first checking out a grubby looking place I found a really nice room not much further. And the street food mmm, but for some reason you don't seem to be able to get veg and meet in one meal. Anyway it rained heavily the first day so after breakfast I took the chance to do some of my TEFL course and ... read more

Wednesday 17th august  We were woken up at around 0630 by the guard shouting 'Ayutthaya- 30 minutes' I had to drag myself out of bed, and didn't even bother getting changed as we were having breakfast and a shower once we got to the hotel. We got off the train, not onto a platform, but had to jump down onto the tracks, and cross another 2 tracks to the other side, all the while carrying our backpacks- it was too early for stuff like this! We got a Songthaew to the hotel which is quite nice 'Ayothaya Hotel' and went straight to breakfast- eggs again, but it was quite nice and welcoming after that train journey. Back up in our room, we said we'd all meet at 9am which gave us plenty of time to sort ... read more

And so, I embarked on my first solo backpacking trip in my 22 years of life.. A crazy impromptu decision after doing a week's camp in Thailand, Bangkok. Took the money earned from the camp and spent it in a short 8 days adventure to Ayutthaya, Thailand, then to Siam Reap and Phnom Penh, Cambodia, before finishing the journey in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Totally enjoyed the experience of 'pack and go' and do it before you turn your back against the decision. Scattered maps and booking transportation/lodging on-the-go, it was exactly the kind of adventure I would like to try, and continue to do so. So below was the excerpt of my experience: So, that’s the end of my short adventure. Having been to amazing historical places like the palaces, the awe-inspiring Angkor temples, genocide ... read more

Střídali se jedni angláni a jeden postarší thajec z něhož ... read more

No něco jako melounové jablko.

Ayutthaya is beautiful. My first weekend here I rented a bicycle with my friends and road around the ancient ruins. They are much cooler than I originally thought! There are tons of them that surround a beautiful pond and temples. Right next to the ruins and flower market is an elephant village that trains elephants to be ridden and do tricks. As we were riding, we stopped to watch a few elephants get loaded into a truck. My friend tells me to turn around and on the other side of me there are about 5 more elephants coming my way carrying people. We literally had no where to go being stuck between an elephant parade! It was amazing...and to think that it's not even a 5 minute ride from my apartment! All of our friends that ... read more

The centre of Ayutthaya is surrounded by a river so we took a little ferry across and were immediately faced with a lady handing out flyers for a guesthouse. We hadn’t really got anywhere in mind and the place looked pretty good and reasonably priced so we said we’d have a look. The room was by far the best we had stayed in so far, decorated with floral wallpaper and nice furniture. The bathroom was small and the shower awkwardly placed but overall we were impressed and took a room for £7. After checking in we took a walk around and found a shopping mall. We were after a Thai sim card so went in and found a phone shop. Angelo explained that he wanted a sim that would work with his blackberry and the shop ... read more

Alright, so I said I'd keep an up-to-date blog, but that has proven difficult amid all the fun-filled times. Luckily, I have been keeping some point-form notes along the way to try to keep order of all Kiah and I have been doing. Right now, I am sitting in Sukhothai at Vatoon Guesthouse which is located on the road infront of the entrance to Sukhothai Historical Park. I am listening to Quincy Jones' album "the Dude" for the first time, and it is excellent mood music for starting the blog. Anyway, lets start from the start, shall we? Day 1: Mon, May 17 After an excruciatingly long flight (something like 25 hours?) Kiah and I arrived in Bangkok around midnight. After going through immigration, we awaited our luggage. Kiah's showed up, mine didn't. The first thing ... read more

Due to a lack of demand, I became unable to get a minibus from Kanchanburi to Ayutthaya and had to make do with the local buses. This was slightly intimidating simply because I had not done it before. Also, there was no direct bus and a transfer needed to be made in a non-touristy local town. I could not complain. This is what travelling is all about. On both buses I took the back seat, simply because there was more room for my bags. A couple of monks hopped on and being totally ignorant monk-bus custom, I thought nothing of it. What I was supposed to have done was give up my seat. One chap, in his fifties, and a Thai soldier instantly gave up their seats, with myself still firmly rooted to mine. I got ... read more
