0918 ICT 12 February 2103 Special express train #9 After grabbing breakfast in the grand club, I caught a taxi to Hualumphong train station. The cab was whistled in from the street, and I got more of a reminder that I am not in America than any anything else that has happened so far. The stopped the cab at a gate, and checked it for bombs with the mirror all the way around before letting it up. So the cab makes it the 6th form of transportation I have taken so far in the last day or so, with my train to Ayutthaya being the 7th. Bangkok traffic is insane. Major intersections often have a 4-5 minute wait before your lanes get a light again. Each direction gets its own tutn, and there may be 5 ... read more

Arrived back in Thailand after our family get together in Perth and started our trip around Central Thailand. Our first stop was in the garden province of Samut Songhkhram which included visits to a unique country market along the railway tracks, several floating markets, a paddleboat journey through the canals and of course a Buddhist temple. The next stop was in the district of Kanchanaburi and here we spent lots of time visiting the various memorials dedicated to the those who worked and lost their lives in the construction of the Thailand to Burma Railway during WW2. We walked the bridge over the River Kwai which has now been restored after the original bridge was destroyed by Allied bombers. Particularly moving was the Hellfire Pass Memorial which included a well laid out museum and a trail ... read more

I checked out of the T&T Guesthouse early and got Tok to give me a lift to Kanchanaburi bus station to make use of the super-cheap but often sluggish Thai public transport system. The journey actually went quite smoothly, as I rode the public bus to Suphanburi before changing to the aircon minibus to Ayutthaya. The journey overall took around 4 hours and cost 120 Baht (about £2.50). Autthaya is located on a natural island, bounded by the Pasak, Lopburi and Chao Phraya rivers. It was the previous captial of Thailand (formerly Siam) and one of the largest and wealthies cities in the East, until it was sacked by the Burmese in 1767. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, containing numerous ruined temples and the former Royal Palace. On arrival, my first plan was ... read more

On this trip I, Markus, will write the blog instead of Nina (she is usually the boss of blogging). Unfortunately, due to her operations in 2012 we cannot go together on the trip through Northern Thailand. It still would be to dangerous for her to get an infection in the tropics - she is not fit enough. But anyway, she insisted that I will go and enjoy the trip. And so I did. It was a strange feeling to be on the road on your own for the very first time. Normally, we always share the "dueties" while travelling - this time, it is all just me. There is noone to share some thoughts, noone to treat you when you are sick and noone to keep an eye on the luggage while going on a loo ... read more

After finally getting over New Year! we headed into Bangkok to explore the temples and visit the floating market. The market was a good experience although didn't feel like it was the REAL floating market of Bangkok, more of a tourist floating market. We took a boat out and floated around the market and alongside the homes that are built over the river, we were then taken on a speed boat around some of the main highways! of the canals (sea sickness tabs anyone?) The real eye opener was the magnificance of the reclining Buddha we saw in one of the temples. The monument the was about the height of 2 double decker busses and about the length of 3, a truly spectacular site. We also saw a standing Buddha which was about 80 - 100 ... read more

Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a former capital city of Siam, a place we’d never visited, and a mere 2.5 hrs. drive from Kanchanaburi, so it was decided, Ayutthaya would be next on our Itinerary before we headed back to Bangkok to see in The New Year. After weighing up our options we decided to book ourselves onto one of the dreaded tourist minivans, it was the quickest way to get from A to B in this instance and I’d read up about the do’s and don’ts beforehand. I arranged for the staff at the hotel to call the travel agency to book our seats, I also asked if they could request that we were the first pick up in order to bag the best seats…….which they did; so apart from the driver jumping a ... read more

Another early start today as we headed off to Ayutthaya to catch a glimpse of the ancient city. This small city about 1.5 hours train ride outside of Bangkok once used to be the capital and royal residence of Thailand. We rented bicycles for the day - a quick, cheap and probably life-threatening way to see the ancient temples. I'm sure we ended up on the motorway at one point when trying to get to the floating water market, but we made it there in 1 piece and was well worth a visit. The temperature soared today, but at least I remembered to put my sun cream on (naughty James!). We saw elephants at the ancient park and are now uber excited about our elephant trek in Chiang Mai. Ayutthaya is over-run with stray dogs - ... read more

We'd seen the islands and explored the north but seen only Bangkok in the middle and it was time to fix that. A 12 hour bus ride down to Bangkok was the first leg of the journey and then a 2 hour train ride for the second half. We'd not travelled by train yet in SE Asia so this was a first, and the train was no different to India just more room for the larger bum. It did travel undoubtedly faster than the Indian version and 2 hours later saw us arriving in Ayuthaya, one of the ancient Siam capitals. We'd heard good things of Ayuthaya, from a good number of people but when we arrived it was far from what we expected! We've told ourselves so many times not to expect anything from anywhere, ... read more
